How I built three TERRAIN RUINS (Warhammer 40k/Necromunda/Kill Team)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this tutorial I will show you how I converted three Warhammer 40k terrain ruins into playable tabletop ready terrain pieces, suitable for games of Warhammer 40k, Necromunda and Kill Team. These terrain ruins originally came from the Warhammer 40k Command Edition boxed set, and have been converted with custom bases and a bunch of little kitbashed details. For these builds I also wanted to try to incorporate electronics for the first time, which went ok, I guess. I'm still pretty new to crafting and building stuff, and this channel is more about me exploring this new hobby and detailing my own journey, rather than being an authority on anything. As such...
HUGE thank you to all the other crafters out there who I continue to learn so much from. In particular I’d like to give a massive shout out to The Cult of Crafting for inspiring such a key detail of one of these builds. Also huge thanks to The Miniature Men for the inspiration for the rubble featured in this tutorial. Please take the time to visit their channels and give them your support.

Thank you very much :)
Just a few things that jumped out to me: H beams/I Beams; Evergreen sell all sorts of profiles if you want something specific. All made from the same stuff as plasti-card so is an ideal modelling material. The card method is great for expenses, but if you're looking for a difficult profile like a hexagonal prism (Good for making bolt-heads) then evergreen will save you a lot of trouble. Rivets; An easy way to make rivets is to use the blunt end of a small drill bit (or something similar) as a punch, and punch circles out of a thin sheet of aluminium foil. You can use standard tin foil, but it's a bit thin for this sort of scale, so worth picking up a sheet of 0.5mm or something. I suspect you could use the aluminium from a drinks can too but I've never done that myself so can't advise for or against it - give it a go! Use a rubber (Eraser for the yanks) as a 'backstop' or anvil when doing this. Rust; Sepia wash is a good idea! I'd say it's worth going back with a few other washes of different shades. Add a little red, a little yellow, a little white. Rust is never a uniform colour so it's an easy way to really sell the idea. Wires: The stretched-sprue method is a good option for cheap and easily worked 'wires'. Just use a tea light or similar and hold a piece of sprue over the flame - once it reaches a certain point pull the sprue apart - the result will be a long thin filament of sprue which is then very easy to use to simulate things such as telephone lines. Green stuff; Buy some Apoxie sculpt, then whenever you want to sculpt, use 25% of all 4 parts. 25% yellow of green stuff, 25% blue of green stuff, and 25% of each half of the apoxie sculpt. This will give you a putty that's a lot softer and easier to sculpt than standard greenstuff. Apoxie sculpt is also a lot cheaper so it'll make your green stuff go further. Keep your tools and hands lubricated with a small amount of water or Vaseline or similar to stop sticking issues. And if the putty is too soft to work right, leave it for a while to harden slightly - 20-30 mins will make a big difference in how it handles. Sandbags: Use a bit of medical gauze to impress texture to the clay, giving it that look of a hessian bag. You can then score a shallow line around the edge to simulate the seam. Gauze is also a good start for camouflage netting! Hope those tips are useful! This is some really nice work and knowingly or not, obeys the golden rule of wargames terrain - keep it simple stupid! Just enough detail to be interesting and eye catching, but mostly large simple shapes that don't strain your eyes and make it easy to appreciate. As such it'll only add to the atmosphere of the game, rather than distract from it!

One thing I really like bout your builds is that they feel "lived in". There's a lot of hodge podge and makeshift repairs that make them feel like a bunch of scavengers or soldiers are really holed up in there temporarily. Nice work.

Great video and results look really good. One idea: the GW terrain pieces have tons of rivets, but the rubble piles don't. Maybe adding long flat pieces with rivets would make it seem more like the rubble came from whats left of the buildings?
@thedefector

Exactly. That had been the original intention but I was struggling to figure out how. I did cut a piece of the original audio from the video where I mentioned that at one point I realised that if I had saved a piece of the walls from the original GW pieces, I could have used cut pieces of that to better help blend the walls with the rubble. But you’re absolutely right. I would definitely do things differently if I were to ever try something like this again. Thank you for the feedback!!

Great stuff! I just made some rubble around terrain. I figured out if I mixed the rubble pieces with a paint pva alchohol mixture in a bowl (like when you turn cereal over in a bowl to wet it) with a WET spoon. You can then scoop it up after rewetting the spoon and place it. It slides right off. Then turn the spoon over and pack it down so it is more settled. Everything went so much faster and looked more natural. BTW your stuff looks perfect.

Good work. I'm especially a fan of the campsite piece. Feels really lived in, despite it obviously being a warzone. Don't feel too bad about the couch. No one's first forays into a new medium are that great. Being bad at something is the first step towards being kind of good at it. Moreover, it certainly LOOKS like a sofa that's seen better days. So, it fits in well. Which is sort of the key to all terrain crafting: it doesn't need to look individually good, it just needs to fit in with the milieu. (It helps that "ruined warzone" or "run-down industrial area" are forgiving aesthetics.)
Today the algorithm was nice and sent me your channel. Great video mate really love your approach. My top tip for using green stuff is to mix it and then let it sit for 20-30 minutes to let it cure a little bit. It makes it a lot easier to sculpt with. Also get some Vaseline for your sculpting tools. Best way to make sure the greenstuff doesn’t stick to them. Keep up the great work!

Yeah It did come out ok in the end. I think it was more that I underestimated how difficult green stuff is to work with. But that will change over time. Yeah I’m definitely keen to explore more uses for tea lights. Eric’s Hobby Workshop have a wonderful underhive build that used them on ceilings to create bespoke lighting ambience. They seem to be really multipurpose.
For terrain which is so large there is no better reason to invest in an airbrush. A Masters gravity feed dual action airbrush comes in a kit that includes pretty much everything that you need for if I remember correctly about 100 dollars American from Amazon that will serve you pretty well for awhile while you learn how to airbrush and for a good while after as it is not a terrible airbrush. Though I would still prime all terrain with a rattle can as it’s really strong and terrain takes a ton of damage alongside regular wear and tear. For the rubble I would go with sculptamokd and tile grout there is a video by geek gaming scenics in his ultimate kill team board playlist and yeah it is the best looking option in my honest opinion. But I believe that you did a great job all around, but knowing more options and being gently pushed to try new techniques you can often force yourself to try things and improve yourself learning more techniques that are added to your style allowing you to mix and match and develop your own personal style in the end.

@@thedefector Thank you! I love the video, it's great! I really liked how the cables for the fire Barrel just looked like they belong in there, camouflaged next to the cables of the original model. But I wanna give You some critique: If You reference someone elses work, maybe also put it in an infocard in the top right corner, I like to do that in my videos for full transparency. (Not that You did something wrong there, you linked it right in description, but just to add that little extra transparency) And KZread did something to your videos quality. The cinematic trailer looked mushy, as if KZread compressed it down... everything afterwards was EXTREMELY sharp, so your smoke effects composited on top of your footage looked great, but maybe leave it away so KZread keeps your video sharp. Or did You add film grain? I heard that KZread also likes to pixelate that... I am amazed at HOW SHARP Your video is at only 1080p, something i picked up is that if You upscale Your video to UHD and then upload it, you might get a sharper 1080p video (becaus of upload bandwiths and stuff i think...). Yeah I was happy it came out that way. Was a pain to get right but it turned out well. Especially considering the mess I made of the Watch Tower wiring.
Hey mate, first of all great work. all of the pieces are absolutly beautiful. tho i would recommend a tipp: If you're working on a terrain project with a base (in your case plasticcard) start scretching the surface a bit so the texture paste has a bit more grip. then add your walls, add your texture paste, add on your rubble and details and then prime everything in one go. this has multiple effects: 1. it saves primer cause all of the little details only get primer on surfaces that are visible later. 2. it saves you alot of time not priming everything individually. and 3. everything has the same surface properties after priming with the same primer. that means paint on a wall will behave the same way as it would on the ground, scatter bits or 3d printed parts for example. other then that its a really really great result you achieved here

@@thedefector in that case: if you want to sculpt something with a cloth texture on it just take something with a cloth texture (e.g. a shirt or something) and gently press it against the greenstuff. works great with sculpting clay or milliput aswell. thats easaly the most realistic result i achieved and there is no sculpting needed what so ever. if you want to have the rubble match the walls of your building, in your case the terrain kit from GW, an interesting technique i picked up is you could use something like Blue Stuff ( a heat reacting mold making material ) and slap it on the walls you want to copy. Now you have a flat single sided mold you could fill with a thin layer of milliput. Atfer drying just smash the recasts into smaller pieces and there you go, just small convincing wall pieces that match the walls of your building completely as rubble. You could use those pieces and mix them with the rock/concrete pieces you made with the plaster. (also you could fill the mold with plaster aswell) If you have urban rubble ground texture (sand, rocks, plaster that looks like concrete and cork pieces) instead of painting them all by hand one by one you could prime them in black or grey and drybrush variants of grey, offwhite and white on different spots and just slap brown, red and orange inks or contrast paints on there (like burnt umber from liquitex) after appliyng splotches with a brush you can then wet blend them together with a wet brush and now you have interesting color transitions without the needed work if you would have painted all of the textures by hand. if the result looks too bright or not blended enough, just wash the whole ground with a black wash as a filter to unify it. As miniature barbed wire i prefer to make my own from scratch. @TheTerrianTutor has a great short tutorial on that topic. (its just some wire you twist but i looks great) One great detail for your next build: if you want to have your terrain pieces to look more lived in or realistic you could spread some Stowage or ammo crates around the place. Remember "in the far future there is only war" and your terrain pieces so far look like a really good warzone to me :D

@@drunklyrik5472 dude, superb. I particularly love your tip about casting the walls. That’s exactly the kind of technique that I needed for this build. Bravo ❤️
Maybe some rough texture textile or cloth could be used to texturize the clay while it's fresh and moldable, IDK and never done it but it came up to mind while watching.

Yeah I tried something along those lines with a piece of the underside of the material I used to make a battle mat, but i just couldn’t seem to get it right.
Curious, how did you make your big peices of debris (plaster of paris and then break it apart)?

The wire mash as the structure's floor is genius but one question: What exactly is the material called you use as base for the ruin?

I think it’s plasticard. I’m not 100% certain as I had a bunch of it given to me, but it seems to be.

Thanks for the quick answer. That's exactly what's confusing me. I know plasticcard as Polysyrol plastic sheets. Your base looks a bit more like PVC hardfoam.

What plastic art board is that? My hardest part right now in making bases is finding a suitable board.
@thedefector

As far as I know it’s some kind of plasticard. At least I think so. A guy I know who knew I was getting into crating had a massive amount of this stuff and he gave me as much as I could carry. I’m pretty sure it’s plasticard. It’s the kind of stuff where you just have to make one small cut and it will snap apart perfectly along that cut. If I can get any further info on it I’ll definitely get back to you.

Wow, such nice work! Very good production quality on the video work too! If I might just comment on one thing. NOT a big issue, but you do say ”whatever” quite often. I think it sells your work too cheap, what you do is far above the level of ”whatever”. Just wanted to mention this since you record voice over separately and might not be aware of this habit yourself :)

Completely agree. I say it ALL THE TIME, and you’re right, it does minimise the work. The original edit of that video was nothing but me making constant excuses for myself, and even I got fed up with it and cut it down to what you can now hear. I think it’s just that being new to this, and relying so heavily on the work of others, I feel like I’m at the stage of ‘fake it until you make it’ and that I’m not yet at a stage where I can confidently inform other people.

I’ll definitely build more rubble bits in the future. It’s a technique I haven’t quite perfected yet.
Nice. Seriously, you could ditch the GW terrain sections, they detract from your own stuff. (Also, my understanding is that Americans call general filler 'spackle'. Mod-podge is a kind of PVA/varnish, and you can get it in the UK, but it's relatively expensive.)
