How I built three TERRAIN CRATERS (Warhammer 40k/Necromunda/Kill Team)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this tutorial I will show you how I scratch built three Warhammer 40k terrain craters from old crafting materials and bits of junk, suitable for tabletop games of Warhammer 40k, Necromunda and Kill Team.
My intention with these three build was to finish off making the final pieces of terrain for my Warhammer 40k table, based around the idea of having crater themed pieces with various visual stoyrtelling elements and electronics.
Not all of these builds went according to plan, so if anyone can see ways that I could have improved upon these pieces, please let me know in the comments or drop me an email :)
These were the first builds that I had completed in almost a year, after taking quite a long break away from crafting. So I'm very happy to have got this project over the finish line, and I'm VERY excited to begin work on my next project.
Special thank in this video goes to the incredible expert painter and crafter Martin Kovac at the Night Shift KZread channel. Please check out his incredible work!

You are too humble (although that's not a bad thing), this is great stuff! I really like the way you narrate your experience and how inclusive you are. Awesome video and build.

Thank you! I knew I was on to something when I turned the light on for the first time. I had originally planned to have both lights wired to the same battery and switch but I wasn’t sure about the circuit. There’s always next time.

Thank you :). More to come! Already working on the next build, so it should be ready some time in the 2030’s
Back in the day when we made everything in store from scratch, I used metal/aluminium pie tins for craters. Turn them upside down and push the middle down, then flatten out the bottom, this will automatically crumple the sides. Glue it to a suitable sized based and embelish

Oh that’s absolute genius. You’re making me want to make more craters!
For similar projects to your standing water crater I've used poundlands "bond together" two part epoxy as a cheap/convenient way of getting enough resin for water effect on a single piece. It comes in a sort of double syringe which dispenses the resin and hardener simultaneously. You can tint it with a small amount of acrylic paint/ink as you mix it (poundland also sell a pack of plastic shot glasses which I found ideal for mixing in). If I remember right you get about 10-15 minutes working time once the two parts touch. More recently I've used clear UV resin (not 3d printer stuff, the kind they use for making costume jewelry). Its great in that it has near unlimited working time then you can cure it almost immediately with a UV torch, but IIRC I needed to use alcohol ink to tint it, it didnt mix well with acrylic paint at all. In either case I wouldnt want to do a super deep pour in one go, but you can build up depth with multiple pours.

Excellent. I’m going to come back to this advice when I next need a water effect. Thank you 🙏
I've also kind of been burned out on table top crafting. I meant I've been stuck in a perpetual state of being burned out for more than a decade, but I keep thinking about trying to get back into creative projects and I just can't force myself to do anything. Look forward to whatever you make. Looks good.

Yeah it’s really horrible. As I mentioned in the video, I’ve had other projects that I loved doing and that I poured my heart and soul into, but I took a break away from and then found it impossible to come back to. I’m still angry at myself for it tbh. I felt like I was failing myself in many different ways. That’s why this time I will just force myself through the self doubt and procrastination. But now that I am the point where this craters thing is finished, I feel back to being excited and enthusiastic again. I’ve already started work on the next project and it feels great. I guess I just had to get over that hill to get to this point. I know it will happen again at some point, but I’ve shown myself that I can push through it. I hope you find the spark that helps you over your own hill, my friend ❤
Well done my dear nephew.....Boys will be boys...
When you spoke to the tank damage not being correct, my mind went right to “Muh friend” and Night Shift. I was telling myself to make a comment to let you know about that channel. Then… you mentioned Night Shift and spoke to his techniques for damage and all was right in the world. I stumbled upon your channel and enjoyed you sharing your journey. Have a 👍 and a comment to help you with your algorithm battle. Cheers!

@@thedefector He indeed has some extremely good skills with Fine Scale modeling. When it comes to fine scale modeling, you’ll find a very high standard and skill set is the general norm. That realm of the hobby comes from wanting to take the general model kit building to the next level. I’ve been doing fine scale since the early 1980s and have seen many a hobbyist at the Night Shift level. He takes his talents and showcases them extremely well on his KZread channel. Fine Scale modeling takes a lot of time and attention to detail. Because of that, I think that most fine scale modelers don’t do KZread as doing KZread videos is a ton of effort on its own. That’s sad really, as the build talent within it is ridiculously good and like that info should be shared. Just as Martin (Night Shift) does. I think his video creation skills are equal to his workbench talent. He is lucky to have that going for him.

It’s about time! 😂
Excellent video mate, cool builds. Personally, since the Soviet T-26 light tank had relatively thin armor, the sheet metal look isn't that bad. Especially since if the tank had a cook-off and the turret was launched off, the turret components may have dragged the top of the hull away from the tank. Anyways, great video!

Holy crap that guy is amazing! Thank you for sending me his way. I’d never heard of him before. More channels for me to steal things from!
Stop putting yourself down! These look great! You're not satisfied because your ability isn't caught up with your taste. It doesn't mean these are bad! The barrel crater is my favorite, though that artillery piece looks amazing. I thought it was a plastic model at first! I think it's actually good that you put very little work into the corpses; they are scenery, not models, and they should blend in as such. I like your barbed wire technique. Advice: Cut away from yourself; brace the foam against the table, not your hand. Get some tin snips, wire cutters, or actual model snips to replace your pruners. You could use hot glue to fill beneath the water effect; cheap and semi transparent. Dark Matter Workshop has a video where he makes a Waste Facility that might help with your puddle surface effects. For finding scale pieces, something in the area of 1:50 scale (HO or O scale in model railroad terms, depending on the manufacturer) is approximate for 28mm models. You can cut out little bits of card stock, like a cereal box, to mask light bleed. Boylei Hobby Time puts lights in a lot of his builds and you might find inspiration for future lighting techniques there. Great work! Keep it up!

Fantastic advice here! Thank you very much. I know it does seem that I am maybe overly negative towards my own work, but it’s because I’m still at the ‘fake it till you make it’ stage. All part of the journey I guess.
