    First off, you have to drywall the entire inside of it. 5/8" drywall gives you a one hour fire rating. The insulation won't support fire itself, but it gives off highly toxic smoke.

The mobile home will have to be removed before I can do anything. There is a drain where the washer and dryer sat, and they plumbed it so that a bathroom could later be installed. I think there were plans to maybe finish the basement sometime in the future. This may or may not be doable.

    ICF's are not great they are the best. I built my own home using ICFs and would never build another house any other way. Yes they are slightly more expensive but the comfort, energy efficiency, ease of use, sound deadening, strength/storm resistance are unbeatable. The cost of energy and fuel make them a no brainer. Im honestly hard pressed to understand why homes are built any other way. And no I do not sell or have any connection to ICFs other than being a satisfied user that paid full price for all my materials.

    I'd like to see how the air filtration system works with the vault doors and blast relief valves. Props to this guy for building his home on top so there is more time to get down there if we were attacked. It takes less than 30 minutes or less to know when they have been launched and then you have to get where you're going. Being on top saves vauable time and gets you in faster than traveling to where you shelter is and then it's too late.

    Let me school you with some facts. Sure there is 30 mins before something lands. Yet you forget that if they launch its not going to be 30 mins its going to be just a few mins. Subs can launch in a moments notice and reach target in as little as 10 to 15 mins. It will take the president 5 to 7 mins to make a decision on weather or not to counter strike. There is no defense against nuke that any country has. There will be no warning to the general public. By the time detection is alerted more than a min has passed. Then a person has to confirm that it is a real threat. This means that they make several calls to people on the ground or location of said launch site to verify that its real. By this time 5 mins has passed and they are now trying to track it location and potentially target sites. Getting the president on the phone takes a couple of mins. Have you ever see the president take a call or be notified of bad news. Some might recall 9-11 as on time. Take this for example. What if that had been a nuke it still took time. Once the president is secure which takes a few mins we are now at plus 10 mins and the president still has not made a decision. Over the next 5 to 10 mins is when they tell the president how many active targets are incoming and if its a full blown attack its not even worth responding at all. If its just a single or a few targets then depending on where it happens you may have a chance to get in to your bunker and hold out for a few weeks while things calm down. Deterrent is what we have and if it ever comes down to it we will use nukes and its not the first or the 2nd time we have done it.

    The mistake is to use insulator, from a study in Switzerland it was found that after 12 days of stay of more people the internal temperature rises too much, because it is not dissipated in the ground, they did the test with people both in an isolated buncker and in one that is not isolated, it is necessary to oversize a lot with additional and considerable costs, the flow rate still decreases, again in the document it is written that the MINIMUM thickness of the reinforced concrete structure must be 11.8 inches (30cm) and the ceiling even more for stop the radiation in some cases you get to 60cm, shield the fallout, this especially if you do not have an overlying structure that even if collapsed acts as an additional thickness for the gamma rays, everything must withstand a pressure of at least 14,5 PSI minimum (1 BAR) for an explosion of 800 kt / 1 MT at no less than 2 miles from the bunker, in fact those who have money do so from 43.5 PSI (3BAR) with the 13.78 inch (35cm) LUNOR concrete filled doors instead of 25cm, they are Swiss regulations, told very simply and quickly

    Some of those unit conversions are wrong I think? But yes, humans radiate about 100W, so like Ben suggested, all bunkers really need a heat pump. I wouldn't suggest that insulating one is a mistake because it still has to be a usable space for another 50 years, just that the heat load in relation to viable air exchange has to be calculated. You could assume that dissipation through any underground wall is going to be ~30%. The build-up of moisture from human expiration/sweating is another issue, as that adds around 1 litre/day. The amount of protection you require depends on where you live, Russia doesn't have enough bombs to drop on every square mile of the US. And most of these bunkers have two doors, so it's not a straightforward calculation

    when building an escape route i know its common to go straight up, however if there happens to be a fire, thats the last place youll want to be, seeing the air pipes are like 4 inch pipes your smoke and carbon will be waiiting for you. instead have it lead out one end of the bunch straight walkable path, then either a door or plastic/rubber drapes then an upward stair or latter. as a miner we had many little areas like this where we'd eat underground, and having that will assure you being able to get out, otherwise youre completely relying on the fire to happen in one specific spot. Think of it as a basement with a commercial grade ceiling. There’s a reason we build basements and retaining walls with concrete. There’s many factors but I would favor concrete as more durable underground, better insulation against radiation, noise, temperature. It’s mass helps it hold back the earth and it has tremendous compression strength. Steel if coating becomes scratched can rust leading to noxious metallic fumes, flooding, vermin, bending and weakness. Cost will depend on skillset and available materials.

    The main flaw I see is this bunker is only accessible to the able-bodied. Anyone who is wounded, elderly, ill or a toddler is out of luck getting into or out of this bunker. I would have included a way to get a gurney loaded with an injured adult into this shelter. An elevator shaft fitted with a battery-powered crane capable of lifting a platform loaded with 500 lbs. would do it. So would a gradually sloping underground entry. Maybe the plan is to just abandon any family member who is not able-bodied. Good luck getting mattresses, big screen TV, a refrigerator and a stove down that spiral staircase. Or removing a corpse from this shelter. Also did not see a decontamination room equipped with an emergency shower. Maybe the plan is to strip naked and hose down inside the house before walking naked and dripping wet down that spiral staircase?

    My comment is purely speculation and I could be throwing out bad ideas; but here's some possible answers to the points you made: Best guess regarding elderly/injured is using a portable tripod crane/winch like cave explorers use; but it would have to be at the emergency escape ladder through the hatch in the shed outside. They may use a hotplate for a stove, bunker doesn't look like it'll house many people so maybe they only need one burner? Hotplate also takes a lot less space when not in use. That stack of ammo makes me assume this person will have a few years worth of MREs in one of the rooms, so no refrigeration should be necessary. They could also use one of those hybrid ice-chest peltier coolers which are able to freeze things running on 12v; so if they have any jars that need refrigeration after opening, there's a small cooler to keep them stable. Without access to fresh goods from outside, and with an abundance of shelf-stable rations, there's not a lot they'll need a full size fridge for. As for furniture, memory foam mattresses typically come vacuum sealed which could easily be dropped down the ladder chute, plus couch/bed frames often come disassembled which makes taking them in easy since assembly would be done after the choke point. Big screen TV, you got me stumped. Maybe they intend to use a projector? They might be able to fit a 50" flat-screen down the ladder if the diagnol space in the hatch is 25" across (50" TV would typically be 43.6" wide by 24.5" tall).

    I've seen basements with that foam board forms and what is nice is you can screw drywall right to it and channels in it to run your conduit.

    So would this sort of ICF construction be feasible in a high water-table area with clay soil (like Georgia/South Carolina)? Or would you have to go with the seal-welded steel structure like in most of your prefab bunkers?

  • @ffjsb

    @ffjsb

    The foundation to my house is clay, and it's fine as long as you have a sump, like any below grade dwelling should have. You can also put a waterproof membrane on the outside as well.

    After the hole is dug I'd drill a well operated with hand pump operation and lots of spare parts. No concrete for 12" all around the faucet. Most of the time the new part or problem with the pump is at the bottom end so you need to be able to dig it up.
