How I Built a Solar Powered Cryptocurrency Mining Computer

A detailed look at how I built an off-grid, solar powered cryptocurrency mining computer. The computer uses ‪@RenogySolar‬ solar panels in my yard, which tie into a barebones PC with an ‪@NVIDIA‬ GEForce GTX 1070 graphics card mining via ‪@NiceHash_Official‬. It's currently generating about $1 per day in pure profit (not counting the system cost, which I explore in the video), without generating any carbon emissions.
More details expected soon at debugger.medium.com where I'm planning a full writeup.

You stated, "The environmental impact of mining is very high." While I applaud you for the idea of mining with renewable energy, that statement is overblown. Please don't feed the FUD surrounding this. The world has so much more to gain from adopting this technology than old legacy systems. Great video aside from that.

Nice video! One question: how to decide the volume of the battery since the battery is expensive : would we plug both the grid and panel at the same time to mining computers ? In case the panel can’t generate enough power , would we swift instantly to the grid to supply the miners the enough power?

No you don’t plug the grid and panels in at the same time this is 100% off grid once the sin goes down he has a hour he can for before the battery goes dead then if you want yes you can plug the computer into the grid at night and mine then plug it back into the panels in the morning he is using lead acid the best way to go would be 18650 batteries the more you use the long the KW hours you can go

It’s a cool setup but the fact that your only making about $1 per day does really make this seem impractical. The amount of money spent will take a long time to generate profit after breaking evening.

thank you for the video I have a few gaming computers and laptops on nicehash as well I want to future proof my earnings and attempt to micro scale a solar system and power needs of each individual rig . or maybe make a large off grid diy system . I have not decided which one is more feasible as of yet. I have a 100 watt solar panel already to test solar power unrelated to mining. and also bought an anker 300 watt solar generator for small power backup. unrelated to mining. it will run my 3060 asus laptop with supplied power adapter for 3 hours fully charged . not great . this also means someone would need a very large solar generator like a 2000 watt unit which are north of $1500 each . I noticed my laptop accepts the pd input for charging through usb c . My anker has a 60 watt max pd output on it so I located a cable and plugged it in and to my surprise the mining hasrate did not decrease much at all maybe just 1.5 mh . and about $2.30 daily average. It also had an estimated run time fully charged of 7 hours . If this holds up that would be great because I could maybe run the solar panel through the generator to the laptop using the pd charge feature and get possibly $2.00 a day average . and have it mine grid free for 12 hours of the day . In theory of course . I wish the anker accepted more solar and or had about a 700 watt battery and I would assume it would run this laptop for 24 hours . it is what I have already so i might as well keep doing testing find my optimal solar placements , power needs and potential cost using what I have to better size the solar equipment i need to run all m y equipment.

After 7 hours the power runs out......so are you rebooting the system manually every morning? I purchased a bunch of used panels at an auction and want to build out a system, but to have something run 24/7 requires an expensive battery setup so i'm trying to see if its possible to run for a few hours a day instead. That would just mean condensing the mining to the hours i generate power.

No. You would need a much larger battery to run overnight. Even with 7 sun hours per day you're still talking 17 with darkness or limited sun.

It depends on your goals. If you want to make money doing this, $1 per day definitely won't cut it. But if you want to experiment with the concepts (and possibly scale up later) building a small system is a great way to start.

Kinda bummed that even crypto people use the "bitcoin mining...power consumption...small countries" blah blah. That's not real. Most of bitcoin mining is done in cheap energy areas where energy is just wasted and unused. So it's not consumption as such, it's an efficient and effective way to bring cheap and unused energy to other areas that don't have cheap/unused energy, in the form of bitcoin.

Great video but your power usage figures are in my mind badly worded or misleading. Worldwide bitcoin uses less than half that of the banking industry and a large proportion of that is renewables. My first statement also goes for the gold industry. Just an example *Yes it may use more than Argentina, not to be derogatory but Argentina does not have the same industrial backbone or addiction to electronics as China, USA and many other Asian and European countries. Of course, it fluctuates but seen by industry, If bitcoin were a county it would hover around number 29 in power usage just above Argentina, banking and gold would take two places in the top 10. Let’s look at how much money goes missing off of servers against the block chain, there is nothing on this planet more criminal than the current financial system. “big rabbit hole”
