❗️DVR OSD in Miles, not Km❗️With only two long range flights with a max distance of 5 Km/3 miles under my belt, I needed to build confidence in my ability to hit some farther steep narly terrain views this spring & Summer. What better way to shrink your world than an 8-kilometer/5-mile flight? After searching for a Li-ion battery and a mountain line on Google Earth that would fit the bill, I packed my bags and made the long journey there. Before sending it, I had to walk 3 km/2 miles through the cactus field to get the best LOS for the lines I was looking at.
I sent a test pack to see how the wind was and RX/TX. Surprisingly, my Video TX was very poor only a mile out. However, the signal was consistent, and I had already walked 3 km/2 miles through the snake pit without water and wasn't returning. This was one of the most nerve-racking flights of my life. As I approached the summit, my video feed dropped to 3-4mbps and was hanging on by a thread. If you go back and pause the video as I start the initial dive, you can see I was at 1mbps. On the way back, I lost the video twice due to losing LOS by mistake.
After landing, my world instantly shrunk, and 3km became a fart in the wind; the feeling was incredible! After getting back and inspecting my SMA-U.FL adapter to the air unit was slightly bent, leaving me to believe this was the cause of my poor video. I’ve flown out past 3 miles since replacing the adapter with nominal Video TX operation. BTW, my Betaflight, the battery voltage warning was set to Lipo, not lithium-ion, from previous flights, hence the premature warnings; however, my heart was still pounding, trying to race back home across the desert floor under 3.2 V.
I recently won $20 on a "long-range challenge" to fly 1.5 km/1 mile away at a meet-up. But that was before they saw this video, LOL.

WOW, what an amazing flight!!! Pretty cool the catch those skiers up at the top. I kept thinking, if I had a failsafe past the snowline, would I have hiked up to recover the quad...probably not! 😆 Thanks for the killer video!

Hey thanks! you couldn't pay me $1,000 to hike up there, I had already hiked 2 miles of trailer to get that LOS to the waterfall without water and was almost dead lol. I figured if I lost it past the waterfall I'd consider it a loss. I have pretty good faith in GPS RTH though after testig it a bunch, I never had to use it in this flight, I flew through all the breakups.
Wow very impressive!! Incredible distance, the hikers at the top of the mountain must have been amazed to see a drone flying around the top!!

hah thanks dude, the only reason I Use crossfire instead of ELRS is because there's nothing to learn, you push a button on the receiver and on the radio and your good. I just got into LR 2 months ago. Get yourself a quality M10 GPS for assurance.

Sweet! Every bit of me wanted to turn around but I just kept saying f it keep going. I can't help but wonder what the dudes at the top of the summit were thinking when they heard come up, orbit and zip back down, there's no trail from the front side of the mtn

I just got into Long Range a couple months ago; coming from Freestyle, it's a different kind of high for sure, at least with freestyle I know I'll get it back in pieces lol. I really enjoy the pre-flight planning on google earth and figuring out LOS for Long range.

Imagine one day having an app where we can plan our flight route and see if all the path will kepp line of sight from your starting point. Or even better , showing you the best LOS route… When i look at the images in your video , you deff right about hughing on the right side. Looked like the better option signal related. Super nice flight man , you’re crazy 💪

I was thinking about that and and also a long range sim that worked based on LOS and battery, unseen wind, etc.. It would be great practice. I just was in the moment and forgot to hug the wrong side, I never used GPS rescue though, I flew through both break ups.
Very cool going from desert to snow. Come up to Alaska and do some hyper long range dives with me!

Yeah, I was flying Lipos before and didn't change it. I actually don't mind the premature warning as a safety buffer. I set my clocks in my house 10min forward too avoid being late lol... Also I new if I got back past the waterfall I could recover it if I had to hike. Anything beyond the waterfall, I'd consider it a loss.
Missions are the best type of thing you can do with a drone

The mesa where the water fall was cut me off, I should have hugged the right side at the bottom of the dive! Also when I got home, I noticed my U.FL SMA adapter was slightly bent. I should have had a better signal.

I've been plotting that flight path on Google Earth for the last couple of months. The road/trail opens in May. Whitney's LOS is very, very tight. I actually don't think you can dive it very long without dropping behind LOS. You have to take off from outside the wilderness area and from inside the national forest zone.
That was sick. The LUT /color grade was making me feel sick tho.

I sent a lipo pack to the waterfall to test my RX and that was crap, but I'd already hiked 2 miles to get LOS and didnt want to go back. No way I wouldn't have been able to do it in 50mpbs. I use 20mbps for best long-range penetration. It held that most of that dive at 3mpbs.. After landing it built so much confidence in what I can push now.
Watching stuff like this makes me want to change to crossfire from elrs.

It's the Pyro foam. I think they have another version since I bought these. I still needed to print shims for the sides to block out all the light.
