a very typical book, but i read Rosenbaum's "Investment Banking: Valuation, Leveraged Buyouts, and Mergers and Acquisitions". it gives a deep dive into the key concepts and practical aspects of investment banking, with a focus on valuation techniques. you can also look through mergers and inquisitions to learn everything about the industry i think its really good! mergersandinquisitions.com/investment-banking/ what was most helpful for me was my school's investment fund because you actually get to touch models and learn from practice :) also networking with analysts! they give you good advice and color on what they do!

Stumbled upon your videos when considering IB as career switch (Software Engineer here 😅) I'm taking it as a sign! Do you have any recommendations about what topics I should really build fundamentals on to break into IB from a non-finance perspective? I'm doing a lot of research and familiarizing myself with IB concepts and courses + going to apply to MBA schools this fall.

main 2 i'd say is 1. Accounting Basics: Understand how to read and analyze financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement) and 2. Valuation Methods: Familiarize yourself with common valuation techniques like DCF, comps, and precedent transactions. These methods are fundamental to understanding how the value of companies are determined. Most importantly, Networking!! Invest time in building relationships with professionals in the industry informational chats & alumni connections.

hmmmm i think there are def transferable and revelant skills btwn the two fields, like financial analysis / project management. but with any lateral transition, i'd say you still need to develop additional skills and qualifications specific to the field, like knowledge of financial markets, valuations, etc. and networking with professionals in the industry is key!!
