Right now I'm a komencanto learning it on Duolingo. I'm only 16 years old, so I can't just go to a convention and speak with real people, my parents don't like driving to places.

Kay A Yes, I've completed 90% for testing purposes and I can assure you it's very high quality; both recording and grammar wise.

You said speaking is easier than listening... I have the opposite problem, I find speaking a lot harder. I understand German to a great extent yet I am below the basic communicative level.

Yep, it's comparatively easy to be able to understand a language, it's significantly harder to express yourself.

In every language you're learning, listening always comes after. You have to have a substantial amount of vocabulary for your brain to be able to start connecting the words and how they sound when they're spoken :) so it makes sense :)

I believe it's the other way around. Learn it like a baby, babies listen for a while before they begin to sound out words.

The difference between your brain and that of a baby is that the brain of a baby is a fresh, blank canvas. Your brain however already knows one, possibly multiple languages, so it will tend to try and match what you're hearing to the language you already know, especially if you have no vocabulary whatsoever in the language you're listening to :)

+Emma Prowell You're right in the fact that babies do it like that, but children take years so fully develop any kind of comprehensive understanding and ability to form grammatically correct sentences. A lot of time is wasted by listening to sounds that don't mean anything to you yet.

I'm the one case opposite of that. I have the vocab, just can't form the sentences, which I should be able to. Syntax is my problem.

For me it's the opposite, at least in Esperanto. It doesn't sound too different from my first language, like English does.

I first learned from my father when I was 6. I have been what I would consider an off and on mezparolanto for years, but I finally have decided to really push myself to be fluent. I go to the local Esperanto meetings, and there is quite a bit of discussion in Esperanto, but it eventually devolved into English. I think it's difficult because most native English-speakers live in a very monolingual area (be it England, Australia, Canada, or the US). When I first started to learn there were only books (I'm only 36). but just in the last few years so much has exploded. I've been using memrise to beef up my vocabulary. That's the hardest part for me, building vocabulary.

That awesome to hear mate! It must be interesting for you learning Esperanto as you would natively have some understanding of the language already yet you'd need to totally study other parts. Luckily, Duolingo is changing the demographics for Esperanto speakers in English speaking parts of the world. For instance, the majority of my viewers come from the US. A lot has changed in the last few years regarding study material. When I started six years ago there was only a few videos in Esperanto on KZread, and lernu.net was the main website for learning the language.

Yeah, basically. I feel like a lot of Esperanto material is geared towards komencantoj, but I have been reading more advanced stuff lately. "Being Colloquial in Esperanto" is one of my favorites for English-speakers. I also just ordered "Vojaĝo en Esperanto-lando" directly from Boris Kolker himself, so that should be good. My Esperantist friend in North Carolina wants me to attend NASK,(Nord-Amerika Somera Kursaro) this summer, so we shall see. But what I've really been doing is what I call immersion. I've been trying to spend as much time as I can in Esperantujo. I skype with Esperantist friends, listen to Esperanto radio and music, chat in Telegram chats, read in Esperanto, and I've even started to have dreams in Esperanto (mostly stress dreams about being somewhere with fluent speakers and not being able to follow the conversation). I think it's working, though. I feel like I am making great strides. Between my first and second live Esperanto meeting, I noted a marked improvement in my ability to hold conversation in Esperanto. I really enjoy your videos, though. They are helpful, though I am somewhat embarrassed that I've known Esperanto longer than a lot of fluent people but and not as good as them. I'll be there, though, soon! I enjoy both your Esperanto-language videos and English ones. As a side-note, I first found your Esperanto language videos and I was surprised to hear your Australian accent in English. Good job on your Esperanto accent!

I began learning esperanto four days ago; my husband started today. I seem to be going about learning in a different way than I have with other languages I have attempted. I have been learning esperanto in this order: pronunciation of letters, then grammar rules, then vocabulary (I am trying to focus on verbs). In every other language I've attempted, my learning order has been much different - common phrases, letters and numbers, vocabulary, pronunciation and finally, grammar rules. For some reason, I have naturally gravitated towards a different learning style/order for esperanto. I am also focussing more on reading than speaking for some reason, because I can intuitively interpret what I see (but I can't understand it when people speak it). In other languages, I focus on speaking and neglect reading. It's fascinating to me how the construction of esperanto forces you to learn it in a more logical way, whereas my approach (and the approach of teachers) to other languages has been more sporadic and jumps all over the place (which is probably why I failed to become fluent). If I ever revisit other languages, I can see it being easier, because esperanto teaches you HOW to learn in a progressive and logical way. Sorry so long, I am missing the 'brief comment gene.' :)

+Skeptical Simmy I think you hit the nail there. Esperanto is very easy to teach logically. I'm currently studying Chinese and even with my experience having learned Esperanto I still have to jump around a bit. Although I'm learning really fast now because I know how to learn a language now.

I like your video. You put so much effort in Esperanto. I am chinese . I started learning Esperanto a few days ago . The grammar is quite easy. But the pronunciation is hard for me. I always got confused with Portuguese words. I use duolingo and Amikumu . It is awsome. It helps me a lot. Hahhaha i will keep learning hope i can getting better in Esperanto.

Awesome to hear. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll get there in no time. The pronunciation will take some time to get used to. Even for me, a native English speaker, the pronunciation was a bit hard at first :)

True independent learning! Good Job!

Just listening can help so much, does not matter whether it is television, music, e-books, podcasts, etc. As long as you are studying and listening, eventually you will start hearing full sentences, and in your head you may not even realize that those sentences were spoken in a different language, that's when you hit a sort of critical mass of vocabulary, grammar and listening.

Could you possibly upload those games for people learning Esperanto to use?

This is my fourth year in my English course and now I think I can call myself fluent. It's been two hours a week plus the hours I spend doing stuff like homework. But now I started noticing that I actually spent much longer learning it, because English is everywhere. The songs I had listened to, the not so good but okay classes I had at regular school, the movies, the words we see even here like dog, boy, love, etc... According to studies, Esperanto is ten times faster to learn than English, but in actual cases I don't think so. I realised I had a very strong basis to start learning English, and now I speak Esperanto like an average person speaks English... Has too think too much before saying anything :/ But I can tell you, talking to yourself is the best thing you can do to practice your speaking 😂😂 You would like to see me when I'm walking around alone.

my issue with other languages is the opposite. I've had 3 years of Spanish, my father's donor family (heart transplant) is Spanish and half of them speak only Spanish, and I've completed most of the Duolingo Spanish courses... I just can't seem to recall words very well (and so can't hold any conversation) - but the second I hear or see them I know exactly what they mean. Drives me insane.

Evildea I'm in between, and depending on the circumstances can be very one or the other. While I truly enjoy a good conversation (or more, a debate) I'm perfectly happy sitting back and peoplewatching or binging on solo videogames and netflix. To avoid this short conversation going too far off the video topic - mi 'began' Duolingo kursoy kvar tagoj "ago" kaj estas 'going' bona. I'm supplementing Duolingo with changing my default Google language to Esperanto, and visiting sites to explain Esparanto questions which are only written in Esperanto. About half of the words used above were learned this way. Side note since I haven't said enough yet... Mi amos viaj videoj

Evildea jes, gi estas ripetas praktikoj. Mi estas komencanto ;) ... I was actually hoping to run into someone who would be willing to start up some back and forth messaging and possibly move to voice later on. It appears I'm learning this far faster than I thought I would, but near total immersion will be the only way I'll overcome the past barriers with alternate language. As a tech support specialist I tend to do a lot of research before asking questions or just going for an "easy way out"... good example was earlier this morning I was counting to myself then suddenly realized I hadn't seen anyone use numbers between dek kaj dudek and was oddly curious if I should be saying "dek unu" or could say "unudek unu" so I found a "matematico en Esparanto something something something" and decided just to straight read it for 5 minutes til I figured out it was a "general guide to numbers and math in Esparanto" - apparently dek unu is the "more correct" way at least. I'll have to revisit it once I understand more of the words. Playing with the language like this actually helps find my weaknesses also... now where is that fancy "g" alt-num ASCII character...

Mi estas nur komencanto, sed la ideo "iru tra la domo kaj nomigi cxian agon, cxian aferon" ege helpas min lerni. "Mi gladas mian cxemizon, mi purigas miajn sxuojn" ktp. Dankon Evildea! (The best part is that with Esperanto, you can be reasonably sure you can get things right by using a decent dictionary, with none of the 'grammar terror' of trying to do the same with a natural language.)

I had a period of about six months learning Esperanto, but that was six years ago. I've been learning it again for the last two weeks, mainly by watching La Pasporto al la Tuta Mondo, music videos, and as of a couple of days your videos too!

Tiam, kiam mi ekvivis en francujo, mi jam parolis la francan ekde dek jaroj sed francoj ne komprenis min. Mi komencis esperanton kaj post du tri monatoj mi povis intersxangxi en suficxe profundaj temoj. Tamen mi ankorau ne parolis flue.. :)

I've just started learning Esperanto really myself. I started on lernu.net, and then when the duolingo course appeared I moved onto that. I learn Latin at school so I could understand the grammar a lot more easily than I would be able to otherwise (i.e. knowing what a participle is). After I became somewhat able to hold a basic conversation, a friend of mine began learning it. Now we occasionally have incredible simple conversations whilst walking around school in Esperanto (though they normally go somewhat like this: "Kiel vi fartas?", "Mi fartas bone, dankon. Kiel vi fartas?", "Mi fartas bone."). Mi jxus komencis lerni Esperanton. Mi komencis en "lernu.net", kaj kiam la duolingo kurso aperis, mi uzis gxin. Mi lernas Latinon en la lernejo, do mi povis kompreni la gramatiko pli bone ol mi alie povus (mi jam sciis kio estis participo). Poste mi povigxis paroli en gxin, unu el miajn amikojn komencis lerni gxin. Nun, ni kelkiam (cxu mi povas diri tion?) diri kun ni dum ni marsxi trans la lernejo. :D

Just for the record, if u wanna know the best replacement for your word kelkiam, it's kelkfoje. Kelk is some and foje is time. You probably know unuafoje or words like that.

I'm a native english speaker, who's second language was French. Now, I am just interested in picking up Esperanto. My only issue, is how unnatural it feels to run a word ending in a vowel into another word starting with a vowel. Seems like contracting, as in french, or italian, would sound much better, and would run much more fluidly. Thoughts?

Mi iras contracting into M'iras. Example in french would be avoir (to have) J'ai and not Je ai for "I have"

Oh no, Esperanto certainly doesn't do that and that would be very weird to me. However, you can in Esperanto drop the final "o" of a noun for poetic reasons (only if it's not followed by a "j" or "n") and you can drop the final "a" on "la" if the word is preceded by a vowel. Apart from that we don't drop sounds except in rare slang occurrences.

One can train listening just like anything else. Just listen a lot. Sound book for example. Brains will do the trick.

I still have a good ways to go before fluency, but I'd say I've recently left beginner and become an intermediate Esperantisto. Here are some things that really helped me: - The downloadable Kurso application. This really helped me learn the basics of pronunciation and grammar. - Memrise.com: Wow, this website is awesome! It uses a technique called Spaced Repetition to teach vocabulary as quickly as possible. There are a number of good EO courses already on Memrise but you can easily create your own from word lists. - Gerda Malaperis: This book by Claude Piron is such an excellent introduction to the language. It starts out very simply but increases in complexity as you read. There's already a chapter-by-chapter vocabulary lesson for it on Memrise. Anyway, I'm enjoying your videos, keep them coming!

I was thinking about this for a while now and was looking for these type of books but never found it. I was thinking that in this book, it would start out in one language like English, and would add words of another language (Let's say Esperanto) so by the end of the book, a person would be able to read Esperanto. You could be that person to make that book. I know I would spend what ever to by it.

Tor Thatch No were near that advanced. They were simply text input fields.

I've been learning Esperanto for about a week now and I reckon I have a vocabulary of about fifty words. Is this an unusually low amount? Also, where I live, there are no Esperanto meetings anywhere within a reasonable distance and I cannot ask anyone I know to drive me so far. Do you have any tips on how I could practice speaking, as I am struggling to string basic sentences together.

A few things that have helped me along the way (kvankam, mi ankoraoŭ estas komencanto...): 1. Memrise for learning new words and Duolingo for learning grammar. 2. Download a list of all affixes and their meanings. Esperanto is a lego language (you can create new words by adding suffixes or prefixes, etc) so this helps a lot. 3. Look up a correlatives table. It can help you memorize words like Who, That, Sometimes, Where, etc. 4. Lernu.net and Glosbe.com for online dictionaries (try to stay away from Google Translate unless you're desperate). 5. Lernu.net and Reddit.com for Esperanto forums so that you can speak with people around the world, many of whom don't speak English, so it helps you force yourself to speak Esperanto. Ne krokodilu! 6. Meetup.com - if there aren't any Esperanto groups near you, make one! 7. Once you start feeling a bit more comfortable, find a short story or list you really like and translate it. This could be anything from "They're Made Out of Meat" to the rules of Fight Club. Whatever will keep you engaged. Try to translate the meaning of the text rather than a literal word for word translation. PS ~ You may want to use special keyboards for typing Ĉĉ Ĝĝ Ĥĥ Ĵĵ Ŭu: for my computer, I use Tajpi, which lets you configure it to autocorrect it to change Cx or Ch into Ĉ, etc; for my phone, I downloaded AnySoftKeyboard for Android and installed the Esperanto keyboard.

`Heya! Your realistic attitude around these topics are very inspiring to me! I'm pushing myself way too hard right now, wanting to learn Esperanto and Italian on top of English, Dutch (native), French and German that I have in my final year of secondary, but I've got this dream to be able to understand people in almost all parts of the world. Because I have limited time on my hands right now I'm not going to be studying new scripts (Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc.) so I'm sticking to Indo-European languages and Esperanto for now, but WOW do I wish to be able to speak a lot. This project will probably take my whole life, but that's what will make it fun, right? Anyway whenever I get fluent in Esperanto (cuz Imma study my arse off for it) I want to start a YT to teach others as well and maybe give free courses at my (by then) former schools. How I'll reach this? Determination, but I'm soooo excited!

Depends on how long you learn and interact with Esperanto speakers. I felt comfortable after about 4 months of an hour a day and a few meetups with actual speakers.

Listening to a new language is the hardest skill to obtain. You know what you want to say, you don't know what someone else wants to say.

I love Esperanto except from 1 word - Aŭstralio!!! It's not the definition of the word, but it's the /aw/ diphthong (aŭ) If you don't know the iPad but other then that it's great

What's the advantage of Esperanto using the accusative case? It seems it would be easy for a constructive language to omit this superfluity.

+Nick M Hi, the accusative case allows Esperanto to imitate any language of the world to a high degree. This makes translations more accurate and allows poetry / music to be more flexible than English. Without the accusative you need to follow a strict word order. In English this is generally SVO. So the accusative case might seem unnecessary to you but other language groups such as Japanese this really helps them understand what's going on.

xD completelly agree but, i can listen esperanto very easy in few time. the english listening is a hell. imagine, if esperanto is too difficult and is like someone write it, in english, not. In spanish for example shop centre sounds shapcentah or something like this and extremely easy. i use this for learn listening and other thing i do is think in english. everytimes. all the words you listen in your mind when you see something or want something in this language that you are learning. i dont know hehe. @gand Being incorrect at times doesn't mean you aren't fluent. Even the most fluent of people in their mother tongue make errors, and or sometimes we have a set of words in mind but once typed you forget/mix some.

Yes. In fact, one of my best friend's locally is an Indonesian girl who speaks fluent Esperanto. In Indonesian there are a fair few especially in the big cities.

I created a conlang that has been learned to fluency in 6-9 months.

Esperanto is way easier to me because a lot of words sounds like portuguese,german,french and italian and i'm studying all of these languages, i think that in four or five months i'll be able to master this beatiful idiom..

Evildea meh. Textbooks just flow better with me. They're better constructed than online learning programs in my opinion, and everything seems to tie in a lot nicer that way. When I was studying french, I just bought a textbook from 1995 that came with a workbook and CD's. I can speak it fluently now. It's just hard to organize vocabulary, syntax, grammar etc, when you have multiple sources. I was looking at Lernu today but I don't really know where to start on there. They have an introduction for everything.

Evildea It's alright. But It's just something I'm going to have to adjust to. Planning on going into the military and college for Linguistic studies and translation. Hopefully Esperanto and Latin will help me tremendously when learning other languages.

I learned Esperanto from a 10 lesson postal course. One was from Canada the other from the United States. The Canadian one was sent through snail mail and worth it. The American one was by internet, but both courses were introductory. I then went to N.A.S.K. for three weeks, when it was that long before. I think now it is only one week. My Esperanto has diminished, but I am studying it again with Duolingo and reading out loud the Teach Yourself Esperanto book. I hope one year of study will bring me up to advanced conversation.

+wolfmatic it is hands down the worst language learning program. I finished the Swedish course (the ENTIRE TREE) and kept it golden. But as soon as someone spoke to me in Swedish I didn't know what to say! I couldn't get by with the sentences such as "the cow is red and ugly" or "my family has a big car". I couldn't even read swedish😂. But translating English to the language you want to learn won't work. Because duolingo only looks at reading and typing, not speaking and listening. Please don't waste your time using duo because the end result will just be disappointing
