How I learn Esperanto

I started learning Esperanto about 3 and a half years ago because I was fascinated by a language that could be learned so quickly. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with Esperanto, and now I think it is the most fun language I speak. Esperanto speakers are really friendly and helpful, and my life wouldn't be the same without it.

Esperanto: Saluton!

You did a great bunch of videos covering your time at NASK - especially useful for someone like me considering attending in the future. Would you consider doing something similar for the World Esperanto Congress (Universala Kongreso) in Montreal in summer 2020? In Esperanto on your Esperanto channel is great, but also some in English for people who aren't fluent in the language yet and thinking about it...especially the 250k+ English-speakers learning it on Duolingo. To show them the vitality of the community, and that it is alive & kicking. Also there is about 250k+ Spanish speakers and 250k+ Portuguese speakers learning it on Duolingo now too (and great news! Esperanto for French and Russian speakers coming soon on Duolingo), in case you can make a short video in one of those languages too :-)

@@exclusive563 That sounds about right. The US Foreign Service Institute says it takes 150 hours of class, aka 6 weeks minimum, to learn. I myself started with a one-week course, and needed a month or two to digest it all

Learning languages is my hobby but Esperanto gives me no pleasure at all. I love learning Russian but Esperanto for me just has none of the aspects of language learning I like. The ease to which it can be learned gives it no credit to my mind because ease of learning is almost universal among auxiliary languages. If you want ease of learning, learn Toki Pona. Interlingua and Lingua Sistemfrater and Slovio have given me much more pleasure. I find them straight forward and so much aesthetically pleasing and I would much rather live in a world where these were the global language. I understand why one promotes an easier language for global communication but in this respect Esperanto hardly has an edge and sometimes I just feel like it's people just avoiding any kind of challenge.

Ah man. I don't understand that, because Esperanto gives me so much pleasure. It's so fun, and it's actually my favorite language. I like it more than all of the other languages I've learned including toki pona. But to each their own, I guess.

Esperanto is a joke, and shouldn't be taken seriously (an Esperanto speaker here). It's very much a cult-like movement which, realizing its ideological foundations were based on a quasi-religious simplistic false premise that the world's conflicts could be boiled down simply to the ''lack of linguistic unity'' and that introducing a common language could solve everything, is now having an identity crisis regarding its aims and functions as an international movement. Nevertheless, it makes a good hobby and is a nice travel tool to get to know interesting people and have fun, otherwise it belongs to a history museum.
