Venus. One of the most fascinating and dangerous planets in our Solar System. It's filled with scorching temperatures, crushing atmospheric pressure, and acid rain. But despite these dangers, some people think it might be a better planet for humans to settle on than Mars.

How? The goal of humanity expanding to another planet is survival of our species, which means Venus is not the ideal candidate because when the sun expands as it starts to fuse hydrogen into helium, mars is the only rocky planet that isn't destroyed in the process.

One fun Venus Terraforming idea is to simple build a new surface at the altitude with the better living conditions. Essentially, utilize the carbon in the atmosphere to build floating blocks or platforms, and then cover the planet with them. Push all the bad gasses beneath this manufactured surface and create a breathing air mix above, and have the surface super reflective so that it also helps regulate the planets temperature. I have heard that estimates on a timescale to actually do this based on the energy that would be available could mean it would be in the hundreds of years, rather than thousands. probably still not feasible though.
I've always thought Venus was a better candidate. My contribution to this venture is to float an idea... Find a chemical way to change the reflectivity of the upper atmosphere rather than block the energy of the sun from space. Or possibly use both to drive the planet into an ice age and then let the planet warm up slowly to a target temperature to introduce extremophiles.
@sahinyasar9119

It is better candidate. Its just that we need to bioform planet to lower atmospheric pressure as well as eliminating acid clouds. Tbh acid is easy part. All you need to do first find iron deposit underground then mix them until no iron left then use left over h2 for cloud city to make water and use FeSO4(aq) to insulate the ground so you can capture acid in underground. If they have enough iron they can spread it thinly above clouds to dormenting acid clouds

If you cool Venus to minus 80*c the atmosphere mostly goes away, a lot of the acid can be absorbed in its liquid state first, then frozen and the remainder pumped beneath the ice in caves. Habitable zones will appear , day and night rotations, remaining atmosphere motion day to night would be extreme, sublimation, it would all need to be modeled. Completely frozen is probably the easiest “arctic “, “ is no picnic”. Colonize the moon and then other parts of solar system first. Build huge ship for 20% speed of light to more habitable places outside solar system. Same tech can bring us to the outer solar system in reasonable time. Not just nuclear but other tech possible today. Preferably before full AGI has been reached.

If the planet could be cooled, I like the idea of condensing the CO2 into a liquid CO2 ocean and retaining it at that state. It would probably mean still having a pressure of about 10 atmospheres and temperatures in the -20 C range, but it would keep the planet unique.

What's not addressed here is the lack of a magnetic field on Venus. Any atmosphere you create that simulates Earth would be blasted away by the Solar Wind, much like the Martian atmosphere was when Mars lost it's magnetic field. If you could solve that, perhaps by deploying a magnetic dipole shield at the L1 Lagrange point, then more options open up. If you could do that for Venus, then you could do it for Mars as well.

You should really delve into the reasons for why such floating Venus habitats might be valuable beyond just expanding the human presence in the solar system, because making an economical reason to develop Venus can take a leap in logic. Personally, I think the in-atmosphere infrastructure and development could become quite valuable as a support mechanism for space developments around the planet. If we start getting ambitions with space mega-projects, we probably won't want to endanger and risk polluting the navigation space around Earth with some mega development, so it could be quite advantageous to instead locate such projects in orbit of Venus, where there is plentiful solar energy available. And if you are going to need personnel to be nearby to work on and direct such projects, having a haven with gravity and radiation protection within the atmosphere would make a lot of sense. So I can see the majority of a remote workforce stationing and rotating themselves within Venus atmospheric habitats. And if you get enough developments and expansions of these colonies, you will eventually have enough recreation activities to keep a permanent or even native population occupied beyond the constant work of maintenance and developments. Also, it would be very advantageous for habitat developments to be very spacious in order to create additional lift, so it is unlikely that occupants would be feel too constrained after it is moderately developed. Beside, such facilities will likely mostly be maintained through automated systems and AI, so it shouldn't be completely up to massive amounts of human labor to keep them running, Rather, I think the purpose of having people there should be so they can provide their efforts towards exterior projects, so if the interior systems cannot be mostly automated, then the value in having people there significantly decreases.

@@Fuglygo2hellfuck Bigger than what? Earth? While Venus has a lot more atmosphere than earth, it has a smaller diameter at the surface and less overall mass with gravity around 91% that of Earth. The most attractive points of Venus is that it has Earth-like gravity and an atmosphere capable of shielding people from radiation. The extreme heat and pressure at the surface just means that it would limit people to the upper atmosphere where pressure and temperature is more earth-like.

If we could build a space-bridge from Transformers, we could move Mercury, or Io from their orbits around the Sun and Jupiter to orbit Venus instead in backwards rotations like Triton. The prescence of a moon could cause Venus to spin faster to reignite the magnetic field, and hopefully slowly rip a hole through the co2 and acid clouds, thus allowing the heat to finally escape into space. As for water, we first have to neutralize and remove the sulfuric acid as it finally forms liquid bodies on the surface, then use the space-bridge to remove Europa or Enceladus, or Pluto, and send them smashing into Venus to give it a better tilt for seasons and bring water
Earth will be like venus anyway, if we dont get filtered out by a large event by then
At 50 km above the surface, Venus is the most earth-like location in the Solar System. Its temperature is between 20C and 30C with the same gravity has Earth meaning no ill effects to the human body compare to planets with lower or no gravity. The atmospheric pressure is close to 1 atm meaning you don't need a pressurized suit but just air supply and a hazard suit to protect from the sulfuric acid which by the way at that height the haze layer thins out and sulfuric acid level drops out significantly. You don't have to worry about explosive decompression if something tears or rips thanks to the similar atmospheric pressure and your protected from solar radiation, thanks to the thick atmosphere which causes an induces magnetosphere. Besides better living conditions, getting to Venus takes less time, about 3 to 5 months compare to 6 to 10 months to Mars. This means less exposure time to micro gravity while traveling to Venus and being closer also means shorter launch windows. Another advantage for a trip to Venus is actually benefiting for a Mars mission. You can use Venus as a gravity assist to go to Mars meaning shorter total mission time, more frequent launch window, dramatically reducing the energy needed for the trip like saving fuel and weight therefore saving cost.
This tech works a lot better on Neptune. You can directly make plastics from it's Methane and it has Helium-3 in vast quantities.
Long term plans. Short term we currently does not have these technologies but in few century or millenia it will. It's a worth investment in my opinion.
could a terrarium orbs concept full of resilient algae or photosynthetic organisms which circulate oxygen with the venutian atmosphere also be able to float in the goldilocks zone of the atmosphere? and could enough of such devices be capable of gradually terraforming the planet?
I say forget about Venus. Just go with O'Neill style habitats, preferably in the outer solar system where you don't have to deal with the solar flares.
What if every concerts all around the world are all in one spot or place at once?
It makes me mad that the soviets aren't getting credited at all for exploring venus.
Terra forming Venus atmosphere would be a very costly first challenge but doable in about 100 years or so. Pressures would be naturally evaporated into space. Water must be added. Luckily, there's lots of that in the solar system. All else would follow.
So the jetsons was on Venus ?

I think hell is Venus
If humans do colonise on Venus, in a way you are not preparing for when the sun turns into a red giant, you are going closer to the sun.
Sending an astronaut is absurd : what is needed to see the things from near is a deep-diving submarine like the bathyscaph.
It is easier to terraform Venus then Mars, much easier. Just drop pipeline from orbit and pump carbon dioxide on orbit. We can create artificial moon from CO2 and build factory on orbit which will produce oxygen, methane and graphene parts of spaceships and spacestations. Floating cities on 40-50km create camfortable life for humans. Temperature on surface will go done when atmosphere density will reduced. I would prefer start with Venus then with Mars. Mars is too far away, not enough power resources, poisonous soil and high radiation... Definitely Venus!

I have been planning for a while to push Mars out of its orbit and place it in earths orbit keeping maximum seperation. Hey... We have two earths there ready to occupy. (neglect "G")
I really don't understand why people would even think to go to venues surface. It is so hot down there. If I were any of those scientists I would also think not to even think about going there and if we did go there, live in sky cities built from the ground up. That is a little more challenging but would be more likely to have less problems than living on the surface of Venus. That is only my opinion but everyone has their own so... that is what I think we should do instead of living on the surface.
I'm 14 years old, and just in case Venus let you down, here is to give you all hope: 1. In 2025, NASA is putting 4 people on the Moon's south pole for a week because they found water ice. 2. Elon Musk will put a man on Mars by 2030. 3. Commercial space travel/trips will be available in your lifetime. 4. If humans mass produce Borophene or Graphene soon, then we will have the material that will be used for deep space travel (best durability + least weight + electroconductivity). 5. Nasa plans on putting humans permanently on the Moon by 2050. 6. There are 303 celestial bodies (moons, planets, etc.) in our solar system alone. One of the moons has its own atmosphere, Pluto and 6 other moons have water on them, with more evidence being discovered every day. I remembered these off the top of my head, so fact check them if you'd like, but its crazy to think that our generation will be the first ever cosmic generation in history.
