I understand your experiences and my heart goes with you. I don't have full psychosis but I've experienced psychotic symptoms and is scary. As you say the flight or fight mode turns on and is a body reaction that isn't controlable. I have borderline personality disorder and my my emotions in extreme ways. Mood swings are basically every certain hours and I know what it is to have an acute mood swing that leads to a crisis related with that emotion that went out of control. I can't predict or completely plan a day because there's a percentage of a crisis coming. I'm quite strict with my meds and therapy to help me cope and handle my crisis better. Is quite scary too. I hope you're doing better!

I have full blown dissociative PTSD episodes and I reckon it's similar, although not quite the same (true psychosis seems much more unpleasant, especially when they end up in my ER). For me, it was a complete loss of control of my actions and reactions. My body and cognition were completely disconnected.

@@fevre_dream8542 I feel you. I have some PTSD and your body just react, you're not even capable of control it until you're taught in therapy some strategies and emotional tools. Therapy also opens the "wounds to clean them up", so you can heal. My psychotic symptoms are disassociation and derealization. Few times I've experienced auditory and visual hallucinations. Also paranoid thoughts are so common, I have to help myself to perceive reality without some of the distortions my mind plays. A technique I learnt in therapy to journal this feelings and thoughts helps me track when this happens if my thoughts are being distorted or a logical. I appreciate deeply your willingness to shared your experiences.

@@Mtz2604 Hey, if being open about it helps decrease some of the stigma and reaches out to people who are in similar situations, it's basically my duty to do so. I feel that the world has a lot to learn from people like us, especially because our experiences give us unique perspective and insight into the suffering of others. Yeah I never really clicked with a therapist, but probably gonna try again this year. The distorted self-image and rumination are getting annoying at this point lol.

I love this channel because you never shy away from simply saying, "nobody really knows." I think sometimes "science" is presented as all-knowing, but it's not, and that's the point. It's the pursuit of knowledge that illuminates the unknown.

Science is generally only presented as "all knowing" by media that doesn't understand science. You'll almost NEVER hear a scientist use the word "proof." But you see it all the time in articles written by journalists with no science education.

As a long time technical writer over time at IBM, Intel, and Google I applaud the switch from ALL CAPS (ugh) to sentence case (lower case letters with initial capitals) which research has shown is much easier to read. And it is! Plus, Hank just keeps getting better and better at presenting and the scripts are top notch. Best science channel in the business (which is no mean feat given the quality of the competition). Bravo, signori! :-)

The way they're doing it now seems like it's adapted from the traditional bullet point format, only MORE CAPITALIZATION and **BOLDER FONTS** both indicate higher tiers in the hierarchy. This meshes well with the fact that the longer points with all the specifics generally end up in lowercase, and those are the ones where legibility matters the most.

I think flatter faces also aid in communication by making it easier to both lip-read and scan the face for emotions at the same time, because they're on the same focal plane. I don't think people realize just how much lip-reading they actually do in noisy environments, but as my grandmother once said, "I'm glad I got new glasses, I can hear so much better".

I think, evolutionarily, the phenomenon of flattening of face, was due more to our ancestors descending the arboreal life to cross the plains; as it facilitated a broader scope of range, including not only stereoscopic vision, but also increased abilities in sense and direction of scent and sound.

There's one rather hugs difference: chimps have 48 chromosomes and we have 46, suggesting that two pairs of chromosome fused in humans or that a lot of interegene material in u7mans was lost. That means expression will be different even if the actual set of genes are similar.

Two pairs fused. They actually identified which human chromosome equates to which two chimp ones a while back - when imaged correctly, you can still see a visible line where they fused, it's really neat! 😊 I forget which chromosome pair it was, but I remember seeing the image and being blown away by how clear it became. We've come a long way since Rosalind Franklin 's x-ray crystallography, huh.

Humans 2nd chromosome is the product of a fusion. We can tell because theres a small remainder of a Centromere on the long arm of it. It's crazy to think that the remnant will build up mutations over time and eventually get erased.

The question that has been in the back of my mind for years is this, 'is our brain complex enough to understand itself' and I suspect it isn't..

I suspect that's a matter of how you define "understand" here. Can a single human brain understand every bit about how a human brain works? Absolutley not, too much information at once. Can we someday collectively, like the simple molecules that make up DNA, come to understand roughly how the brain works? Maybe, I don't know enough to say. Fascinating question.

Depends on your level of abstraction. You can never know enough about your brain to predict what you will think in the future (though theoretically some hyper-advanced computer with a sufficiently good enough model of your brain could), but you don’t need to be doing that to understand something. Many phenomenon are due to the complex interactions of tiny particles and are thus without ridiculous computing power and unrealistically good knowledge of the state of as a system and are thus unable to be fully predicted. Yet despite that most people would agree they understand how water flows. I know how a computer and neural network works even though I can not predict their behavior with 100% accuracy. With neural networks we’ve even started to figure out what the various paths of neurons are looking for despite it being effectively a black box for most people who make them. We don’t have to understand the brain fully by ourselves, we just need to get to a point where we have good enough abstract model which we can use as a guideline for more realistic models dealing with specific elements of the brain, along with some computing power to check for unforeseen phenomenon.

There's a field of study that has developed judgments on what we can and can't comprehend based on IQ levels. It may be mostly pseudoscience, but one said that you need 140+ IQ to be able to invent something new yourself. Humans are just below that sweet spot, IMO. Maybe .01% of the population could, but lack the necessary educational background.

I'll say nothing but the obvious, but it's still an interesting reflection. An entity containing all the knowledge that is needed to understand itself is a type of self-referential paradox that is by principle impossible to surpass. In other words, an individual will never be able to understand themself completely, just by logic. However, that's the thing, you don't have to gather all info about yourself to understand and manage yourself reasonably well. Besides, as others said, we have computers, multiple individuals, ways to record knowledge outside of our brains. I think that may be possible one day, it depends on what technology at the moment will avaliable out there to understand the brain, if it can be understood and predictable at the first place.

Epigenetics is definitely the future of the field. This is just another example of significant it is to our understanding of ourselves. I can't wait to learn more on this in the upcoming decades.

@@2wados416 Or provide life saving epigenetic therapeutic treatments for debilitating diseases. Many chemotheraputic cancer treatments are in fact epigenetic treatments, unfortunately these are not a "one size fits all" solution. Translational science can use epigenetic research to create patient-specific cancer treatments that are more effective with fewer negative side effects. The problem is not in doing the research, it's in how it's applied.

Also, where did I suggest "make it all happen, science, yay"? What I mention and suggest is that research into epigenetics and genomic science greatly benefits society and the human race. Of course, scientific research must take place within clearly set ethical and moral guidelines, to which the vast majority of research does conform too. Of course, there will be unethical applications of science (or as you so eloquently put it "rubbing their hands") - we see that happening in nations where ethical guides are not in place. Regarding "gain of function" studies - these studies are used to elucidate functions of unknown genes, elucidate structures/interaction of molecular complexes, or to engineer proteins/enzymes to better perform a function, e.g. understanding the difference between chimpanzee and human serotonin-producing enzymes and how this can help people with crippling antisocial behavioural or neuroticism issues. Most of the gain of function studies can not be translated beyond the molecular level to be used by " others beneath the surface rubbing their hands at how this can be used" for nefarious purposes. It is also used to research disease mechanisms to better understand how mutations affect molecular evolution causing a disease to be more pathogenic. By doing these research studies scientists we can be better prepared for epidemics, like the one we are in the midst of now. If research on the virus that caused the SARS outbreak in 2002 did not continue, as you would seem to suggest, we would've been at a major disadvantage for combatting COVID. Indeed, the research conducted on the SARS virus gave us a huge advantage in the creation of the vaccine that is at this moment saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Your comments suggest that this should not have been done; would you rather have countless lives be devastated by the virus? Your entire argument is based on this. At the level of primary research (of life sciences), we want to elucidate molecular mechanisms, to find out how something works & why it happens. Like for example figuring out how glucocorticoid (a medicine) receptors (in the cell) interact with different proteins and substrates to help explain cancer progression. It provides insight into why the same cancer treatment can cause tumour regression in one patient but causes cancer to become exponentially more aggressive in another. "I'll repeat. Just because we can do something, does NOT mean that we should" - this implies that none of the amazing things made possible through scientific research should have taken place. This goes back thousands of years. The grain in our bread, the meat in our burgers, the cheese in our sandwiches - all have their roots in science even though the ancients did not have the technological advances we have today or the vast wealth of scientific knowledge that we have at our disposal. Circling back to your comment of me suggesting "make it all happen, science, yay" (which is entirely inaccurate) - scientists do not make science happen for "the hell of it". It's based on the scientific method: Oberservation > Hypothesis > Reseach/Testing > Data Analysis > Conclusion. It aims to acquire knowledge in a verifiable way to explain natural phenomena. It's all around us. Without it, the human race will still be in the "dark ages". The technology you are using, the propulsion you use to commute, the medication you take, the food you eat - everything has its roots in science. Lastly: "Mate, get a reality check." - my reality is checked, to a much more comprehensive level than you may think. I suggest you check yours. Do some research; not scanning a few youtube videos (although those produced by SciShow is very reliable) or glancing at a wiki page. Go read primary scientific publications, ask critical questions, use google scholar, go to lectures, talk to scientists. If none of these options are viable for you, I suggest you move somewhere with no technology, forage for food, and cut all technological and scientifical advances from your life.

I keep thinking this, too. DNA is just a bunch of interpreted code that self-organizes protein functions into the actual active program, and it's those functions which are still hard for us to read and write. This was made crystal clear waaaay back in one of the Crash Course Chemistry classes. It's all just chemistry programming, moving molecules around using physics.

that is a good analogy actually, because in a way if the DNA is the code, that means it also need a computer to run, the computer would be the cells that house the DNA. how the DNA is read, expressed and how the proteins are built and used, are just as important as the DNA itself. flip a few switches in your liver to turn those cells into neurons, and you won't get a second brain, you will die.

Considering we lost the entire short arm of a chromosome, including the centromere...? The other two big things are: 1) We had a second duplication of the brain size genes, giving us 8 copies, versus their 4. 2) We have had the section of brain just in front of our occipital lobe switch from visual to auditory information processing. They have better visual memory than we do, as proven in the Japanese chimp studies with numbers flashing on a screen. When randomly presented on a touch screen, they can recall up through 9, in proper order, while no human can recall more than 6. Meanwhile, we can recall things we heard for decades.

I’m actually loving the new look a lot! That being said, I wonder if the foreground video of Hank would look better with the Saturation and Contrast bumped up a notch. Loved this episode!

As a molecular biologist I am amazed by this guy's ability to explain complex systems in terms so understandable that anyone (at least so I assume) can get some level of understanding from it.

Done that at work to some level. We've been working on treating Parkinson's Disease by growing some of the patient's own brain cells in the lab before returning them to the brain. Barely started human testing yet but results with monkey's were promising.

like he mentioned, we are what we eat, and what we eat often have the same proteins needed to live. Like, genes that convert glucose into energy is going to be in basically everything because everyone gets their food from earth, which has glucose as an energy molecule. Or various Vitamins. or proteins that help cellular duplication. dunno if its 50%, but it is a lot.

We have a lot in common with bananas. We are both multicellular. We breathe oxygen to metabolize our food (bananas need CO2 to make their food, and then need oxygen to get energy from it). We reproduce sexually.

As a biological scientist, and specifically someone with a Ph.D. in molecular biology (the particular subfield of biology at work here), how is a hard science that requires those studying it as undergrads to (typically) take a year of physics, 2+ years of chemistry, math through calculus +/- statistics, just as *background* for studies in their own scientific field (biological sciences), not a STEM field? The S is for science after all. I'm not jumping on you folks specifically, but more on perception that STEM equals computer technology or electronics, created by what may be an excessive emphasis on these topics to the exclusion of certain sciences, specifically biological and chemical sciences, and even most of physics. I understand this is an idea you've been given through example, not a snub towards these sciences. But we need to either remember they are included or should just admit that science, for the most part isn't actually included and engineering means electrical engineering and just call it TeEM. But I don't think we should, if anything the past year or so so has taught us is that we need more bioscience literacy not less. And with a little more wide ranging background in the gamut of stem fields, it might be more clear how we approach studying many of these topics. Molecular biology has been historically, among the most systematically approached fields in biology (see Platt's classic 1964 paper on Strong Infererence test.scripts.psu.edu/faculty/m/j/mjg9/Guiltinan_Lab_Website/Publications_files/Strong%20Inference.pdf). Although the mechanisms are somewhat different in eukaryotes (attenuation is not a possible mechanism for reasons which should be obvious if you understand how it works), we typically begin our understanding of regulation of gene expression with the lac operon as a simple model. Then move on to eurkaryotes. Here's a decent overview of the topic in eukaryotes that doesn[t require much background www.khanacademy.org/science/ap-biology/gene-expression-and-regulation/regulation-of-gene-expression-and-cell-specialization/a/overview-of-eukaryotic-gene-regulation , After that you can start getting into the nitty gritty of the mechanisms underlying different levels of regulation, for example, you could start on enhancers, silencers, and transcription factors. (You may also note that some mechanisms like RNA interference that are totally natural mechanisms leveraged in agricultural biotech are made out to be 'unnatural' by anti-GMO activists) To see the form of the initial experiments to define regulatory elements, go look up promotor bashing (simple intro: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promoter_bashing). With just a little bit of understanding I'l bet it will start looking more like chemistry than alchemy. ,

@@chrisb.7787 We can _manage_ it, somewhat. Sweat, reflecting cloth saving you in the Sahara. But we can't really manage what isn't in front of us. There's a reason that companies intentionally being continuously in debt, and having no savings for emergencies, is kinda common practice in the west. That problem has to do with not being ready for 2020, or other catastrophes.

I learned a long time ago that all mammals have 7 neck vertebra, the gene for this is the same between all of us, but their shape and size is so different... So for me, its the old thing, we have lots of the same stuff, but that tiny little bit of difference interects with the great similar as a whole in vastly different ways (Video more or less says that it seems). I like to think it links all of us species together, we're all the same, at the most, but our little bits of uniqueness make each of us special.

Thanks for the video. I've seen it a couple before, but it's great to be able to come back and refresh my memory.

The bit about mice with human genes made me think of story I read once called "Flowers for Algernon". It was a very sad story. They made a movie out of it called "Charlie" that was a bit of a tearjerker also.

I think there are about three versions of that movie/story.

I've always been amazed by how different gorillas are to us, especially when it comes to their diet. They build these HUGE muscles while eating things that we can't even begin to digest. They seemingly have more in common with cows than humans when it comes to what they eat.

it depends on how we evolve. Remember evolution is not a gradual building towards a better, more perfect form. The way the world is changing right now who knows. Maybe mammals will become acclimated to the north and south poles where it'll be cool enough to not cook in our own flesh. Or we might even begin to evolve into a cold blood species. Imagine that. It all depends on who survives to have children.

@@hououinkyouma5539 i agree. As I said in previous scishow comment section you give our species an idea and time and we'll do things thought impossible. And yes I'm aware of our fine motor control. What's funny is that if you turn that control off in our brains we do actually have enormous strength in our bodies but our brains limit our ability to tap into it because if we did we could seriously injure ourselves. We do occasionally see a human who manages to push past this brain lock like people of average strength being able to lift a car up off a loved one or withstand a lot of physical punishment and pain.

More than that, you have 23 pairs of chromosomes. All other Great Apes have 24 pairs. Our chromosome 2 is essentially their chromosomes 12 and 13 joined head to head.

@@SujitKuRaita Well what would you have instead of understanding DNA and how it works? You can try to understand DNA and believe in God. There are people who are Christians and do this. Or do you believe studying DNA is for the fact of studying it anti-Christian?

How do they account for individual genetic variance when mapping a genome? Do they use multiple individuals sequence the genomes and average them out? Or do they only use the genetic information that is ubiquitous across all the individuals of a given species when comparing genomes of different species?

A bit of both, depending on the mathematical model :) Kind of like average height calculations. Do you account for women and men being of different height, or not? What about age? It's a great question which shows why it's super important to look at the research methods ourselves, from time to time :)

While an important question, humans are actually really really similar genetically speaking, so I don't think that variation will be that big of a problem, but I'm sure they are taken into account.

What fascinates me most about DNA is how scientists can ever be certain what differences make a different species and what differences just occur between different individuals of the same species. It always seems like they're studying the genome sequence of one individual chimp and compare it to one individual human. Or have we actually figured out a "generic chimp genome" and a "generic human genome"? 🤔

I like this new UI

I like the idea of comparing genes to books. And that changing something small like a paragraph or a few words are responsible for the more obvious differences.
