How HS2's Burton Green Tunnel will enhance the local environment in Warwickshire

Ғылым және технология

The 700-metre Burton Green Tunnel, located in Warwickshire, is beginning to take shape as construction is ramping up. The tunnel will follow the existing disused railway line in the area and a key feature of the tunnel is that it will include enhanced environmental features. These include tree planting, new footpaths and better connections to local woods.

Fascinating to see all the elements coming together. Little did I realise, walking up a muddy disused railway track with my then-girlfriend and her dog in 1978, that 45 years later there would be a new high-capacity railway linking our major cities on that very spot. Good luck with the remaining construction.

The regard given for the environment is actually incredible vs other HSR projects around the world and even in Europe, just a shame costs/timeframes are always out of whack in all big infrastructure projects in the UK (and the wider Anglosphere too), though I suspect this will be forgotten when the benefits are realised like with other projects

I used to live within a mile of this tunnel at a time when the Kenilworth/Berkswell single track branch line ran through a narrow cutting. These tunnels follow the line of the cutting. The tunnels are wider than the cutting. This meant demolishing the village hall. Now replaced with a new improved version.

Paused, not abandoned. Sensible reaction to the UK finances. Old Oak Common could not cope as the permanent terminus. It HAS to be Euston, this tine with the logicsl 11-platform configuration which is actually needed for the full longterm service delivery.

The UK has an appalling record record with major infrastructure projects, and from past examples rightly so. But HS2 is so encouraging. As a naturalist, I did coastal wildlife surveys pre and post the channel tunnel. then nature didn't matter much. With HS2 there has a been an earth shift in thinking, where wildlife , and communities matter. I get that you cant move ancient woodland, but but by doing there very best and replanting far more than was removed is a slightly better option. We need nett zero. building more roads will not do. Rail is miles better than motorways, even with EVs. Life is about imperfect compromise. I am on the "green side". yes, best not to travel at all, but it is a human condition, would you rather more cars, busses and trucks? or a few trains?. HS2 in not a good option, but is the better option given human kind.

Why is HS2 using such a vast amount of land? Railway construction methods were perfected in terms of efficiency in the late 1800s, using the rail heading being constructed to move mass materials forward from excavation sites such as cuttings and tunnels to embankments etc. You would think that using that method but with modern excavators in place of navvies would be even better. We seem to have a fixation today with having to use trucks to shift muck. Comparison of timescales would suggest the old methods are superior too. Brunel would have had the thing built and carrying passengers before HS2 had got the haul roads in.

There is much local pressure from the villagers to make sure this structure does not disrupt nearby houses, traffic routes and the existing greenway, which is a cycle route using the same abandoned railway line which HS2 has taken over, all meeting at this odd pinchpoint for the HS2 project. There is a lot to get right at Burton Green and much could go wrong. That's why HS2 is being particularly conciliatory by presenting this public centred progress report. It is unfortunate that the term 'green' tunnel continues to be used; it is a false impression that this method of tunnel building is of benefit to the environment, as opposed to the more environmentally considerate bored tunnel. The Burton Green tunnel should be called a 'cut and cover' tunnel, which describes the process. This is the only place on the HS2 route between London and Birmingham in which a cut and cover tunnel is more environmentally appropriate than a bored tunnel, because it will be dropped through the bottom of an existing railway cutting. Sadly enormous environmental destruction is occurring at Wendover, Greatworth and Chipping Warden tunnels which might have been bored but are not; and lamentably the ancient woods of Cubbington have lost their integrity by being sliced through when a more enlightened engineer might have proposed a short bored tunnel there

And yet you want more railways. And have them cost less. The two are incompatible with all the nimby requests. Not needed, waste of money = a white elephant which will blight the genuine rail projects that this country desperately needs like improved east west connectivity across the Pennines. The government’s own inquiry says that it will be marginal value for money at current costs. With premium fares to use it and limited, if any time saving it’s time to pull the plug on the Digbeth to Wormwood Scrubs railway.

Although this is HSR. Its primary aim is to increase capacity on the biggest bottle-neck in the rail network. One bonus will be to open part of the "old" rail to more cargo taking 1000s of trucks of the road. The HS bit is a secondary. Hopefully HS2 will make a cross Pennine route more viable. That will be very costly because of the Geology. But I would rather have that than another motorway.

@@simonturner5450 the reason for HS2 gaining capacity has more to do with removing the none stop express services north south on all 3 main lines (as originally envisioned) this allowing more freight in the rails and more local/stopper passenger services. A freight line is a bit nonsensical here as it would only maybe gain you one extra path on the main lines instead of the several HS2 gains, and alot of freight goes all over the place making one new line quite difficult to engineer to suit all. So you can either have one high speed line that creates loads of new capacity, or several slow freight lines that only marginally increase capacity. I do however agree we should be enhancing and hugely expanding our rail freight network and classic network as well (note I say as well) preferably all electrified
