How Hoyte van Hoytema shot TENET

Фильм және анимация

TENET has some of the most immersive cinematography, of any film from the past couple of years. Not only did Hoyte van Hoytema give it an incredible look and feel, but half of the film is shot backwards, so how did they do that?
In today's video, I look at what equipment Hoyte van Hoytema used, how he created the distinct look through lighting, composition and colour, as well as how they shot scenes in reverse.
As always if you have a film or tv show that you would like to see me break down, then leave a comment down below!

    Nolan & Hoytema destroyed the boundaries that every other filmmaker would have considered too ambitious or impossible to surmount with Tenet. The script and the cinematography are equally awe inspiring. Tenet is very divisive, and separates those who appreciate groundbreaking intelligent and engaging storytelling & craft from those who don’t want to be forced to think or challenged with abstraction as a viewer.

    Brilliant way to put it. I’m 100% on the side that thinks it’s groundbreaking, I really can’t think of another director today breaking those sorts of boundaries of conventional filmmaking on a blockbuster scale.

    @@AngusDaviesDP Thank you, and I agree completely with you. Nolan is a gift, and his ability to take that risk with a $200M film without the studio dumbing it down gives me hope in modern cinema. It flabbergasts me to see how many people minimize and criticize Tenet. But from Citizen Kane to Kubrick, masterful cinema has suffered from disappointing box office numbers and critique when released. Thank you so much for your channel!

    For sure, I’m shocked by how controversial Tenet was as well. But people have different tastes, hopefully Oppenheimer appeals to a wider audience so we can keep getting these $150mm budgets. Glad you like the content!

    This is a load of crap as large as a goddamn mountain. I suggest next time you want to play wanna be elitist you pick a better hill than fucking nolan films. Like,oh I don't know...anybody ever who ever made actually complex films worth thinking over? The only thing truly ambitious about tenet is trying to see how much empty, pointless, nothing exposition you can cram into script and still have people convinced that that's what intelligent filmmaking looks like. There's more brilliance, ambition and complex storytelling the first five minutes of a Paul Thomas Anderson movie than in most of nolan's filmography put together. But I guess it's easier to pretend like people don't get james bond with time manipulation. "Boundaries impossible to surmount", jesus christ. What happens when you eventually watch a kubrick film then? Melt?

    The center framing is essential when filming for IMAX or large formats because you want your audience eyes and head not to wonder a lot when watching on an IMAX screen, but to stay in the middle of the screen.

    11:40-ish it's the time travel aspect of it that I find interesting, more so than the actual story, or the technical aspect of it, the behind-the-scenes aspect, I mean...the idea of going backwards, etc, about the logic of it, about how weird that would be, lol...I think the aspect of time travel that has always intrigued/haunted me most was the idea of (forgot what they say) time travel being in "closed form", whatever they call it...that everything that happened/is going to happen happened...that anything you do is predetermined, and yet can have an effect on things (has *already* had an effect on things, since you "already" did it, if you do it)...there are some comic book episodes of Thorgal who do things in that way...

  • @archangecamilien1879

    @archangecamilien1879

    ...of course, lol, when I watched the film, I thought they did everything in the editing room, just reversing directions, etc...I was surprised that you have people doing things backwards in this day and age, I would have thought it would be so much easier to just have them do everything normally and reverse it later, or splice two people fighting normally so that one of them seems to be fighting backwards, etc...the coordination of it all...but it's the time travel aspect of it I find intriguing...thinking about the logic of it can be somewhat addictive, lol, like some math problems can be...trying to work things out...

    I think Hoyte van hoytema was great addition to Nolan's films. I like Wally pfister and his work especially the dark knight but it never really stood out to me or enhanced the story, which sometimes could make the look of a Christopher Nolan film quite boring.

    An interesting style for you to look at is how Michael Mann shoots digital to the advantages of digital without any care to make it filmic. Examples Public Enemies and Miami Vice. He stayed closer to filmic in Collateral, but that film needed that as 35mm was used for some shots and needed to blend.
