I've watched Arcane and Edgerunners, and is an absurd how amazing these shows are. I think it is really complex to write a good show inspired by a game, when you think about the interactive part, how to make the player feel a part of the story if they are not controlling? Its impossible right? So to me, the best you can do is to show something the game didn't show us or at least didn't show us enough, don't get me wrong tho, its fundamental to honor the original material, but for example in League of legends you obviously can't root for Jinx or Vi, neither follow then in a journey while meeting characters you learned to love in the game or in Edgerunners, i have never played Cyberpunk, but it's frankly because im not much fond of RPG's, especially one that the world feels so dead and shallow (i know it's not, at least not shallow, but it feels like that you know?), i've never felt compelled to play until i watched Edgerunners then i instantly felt the necessity to relieve that experience somehow, and there you have it, to me that is how you make something great, you study it, you experience, if you can love it thats good, but it's not fundamental, but you have respect it and tell something new, something truly cool, show us the world, things we didn't know we needed to see, cause otherwise we will always have the games to replay and experience that same story you know?

The biggest reason why Arcane was such a success was because Riot utilized their own in-house team. In other words, the same people who wrote and created the world of league of legends in its entirety and all the champions, the factions each belonged to, how each one tied into a bigger narrative plot, and how each were unique. And this is just from a lore standpoint, not even including how they function in-game. And whenever Riot was offered by other outside executives and producers to help "aid" the show, what did they do? They outright turned them down. And what was the result? 100% critic score and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes Three Emmy awards including Outstanding Animated Program and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation Won Game Award for Best Adaptation of 2022 Broke records by becoming the first video game adaptation to win both Annie Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards And made an estimated 1 billion $ in profit Blood Origins. You literally share the same platform to one of if not the best show adaptations of a beloved franchise. You have a literal shining example right in front of you. This should not be rocket science. But if it is and you're not an engineer and downright terrible at math, I'll give you a simple equation. PASSION = PROFIT

No, it's all because of identity politics. All of these shitty shows are united in pushing one-sided, hypocritical politics at the cost of everything else for the express purpose of pissing off fans and guilting the rest into watching. They create narratives about people who largely don't exist and then strawman critics as belonging to that group of people. They use the outrage as a shield by strawmanning complaints as hate speech. And by declaring their shows to stand against racism and sexism, they misrepresent discontent as hate speech in order to justify their shit shows and continued work within the industry. Losses are written off in taxes and are almost certainly - "accidentally" - exaggerated to the point where the company ends up making profit while positioning itself as "taking a stance" against discrimination (in spite of the hypocritical nature of the shit they produce).

That's the silliest thing I've read. You have any idea how much a show or film costs? It isn't cheap. Sure, Netflix gets paid, but they aren't going to sustain themselves by always delivering garbage and hoping it gets hate watched. That's just not feasible at all. This isn't Uwe B. they don't get big tax breaks or anything like that, they have to turn a profit and profit means content actually working (which they have delivered on). Regardless of how you feel on the content, they still value wins because there's no business strategy or scenario that rewards hate watching.

Well star wars lies in shambles at this point. And andor further contributes to the deconstruction. Boba fett and kenobi were so god awfull because it's about old characters and not a ounce of love and effort went into them, while all that effort went into andor that new character disney created even though nobody cares for him. The sequel triology was so bad it transformed sw from one of the biggest cinematic franchises in history into a tv property with mostly shitty cw level shows. Great job disney. But besides being absolute garbage sw is now also diverse and inclusive so we at least have that.

Yet, it is clear as day that instead of building the magnificent house outlined, they decide to throw away the instructions, crap on wood planks and stick the steel beams randomly in the ground with no foundation, and then get turn around and get mad at the inspector (the audience) for telling them their building is not up to code. Hell, most of the time they give that childish response of, “Oh, well you are not up to code!” and then stomp away. I literally cannot understand what compels writers to despise video games. As a writer, I would LOVE to work on a video game story, there's more limitations to a game that makes it even more of a challenge to write such an amazing story, so when franchises like halo, the withcher, and last of us are still somehow writing these amazing stories, it genuinely hurts to see writers for shows completely ignoring the very real impact that these games can leave on people

I imagine it's the same deal as with the Uwe Boll movies. Video game IPs are relatively cheap to negotiate for and having an established brand name on your product immediately gets it more media attention. They probably had a script ready intended for an original IP at first, realized it was mediocre and would be impossible to market, so they bought something recognizable to slap on it just so the studio can get something out the door.

The problem with modern writing is that they write stories _about_ franchises instead of writing stories _within_ franchises. In a recent video titled "Why do Halo fans argue about this..?", Late Night Gaming criticized the current state of the Halo franchise by comparing it to the Disney Star Wars trilogy in that they both feel like they were written by people who were hyper-aware that they were writing about these franchises and- instead of telling stories about the characters and events in those universes- ended up writing these deconstructions of the I.P.s which merely plug in the expected elements in an insecure way. I feel like that describes a lot of franchises now.

But with how mainstream western media nowadays just want to cash in on popular things, they had to build up their resume with the Witcher. I also think there are also sprinkles of them thinking they can do better than the original materials OR the constant element that I notice in a lot of game adaptations, people involved in the bts embarassed about having to do something with video games but the money tho.

what the executives want is make movies from existing franchises because it's "easy money", but the people doing the creative work wanted to make their own original stuff and are too arrogant to accept and do a good job of "interpreting" someone else's work because that's more or less how everyone is in their field. They see themselves as "artists" and can't handle "work", and that's why they always have to respin something "in their own way". In this case they are also incompetent hacks that can't write a script to save their lives and got the job because "muh diversity/representation" which is a different discussion. What happened with Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings is one of the very few exceptions, and hopefully Henry Cavill's next project about Warhammer 40k will also be one of the rare exceptions as now he should be the one steering the ship.

I think works but they definitely hit it on the nose so hard it takes you out of the immersion like one of the lead characters saying men have small brains clearly written by a biased writer who has some score to settle. You can create diverse roles without making it overtly clear you don’t like a particular group.

My mind immediately went to the Resident Evil show they did last year. I think they did the exact same thing with both of those shows. They knew the series was gonna be bad halfway through filming, then they pitch the idea to get a license then change everything up to match, not really caring about the IP but just trying to get away with the bare minimum effort and hope they make their money back on it.

notice the difference between the source material for like arcane and the Witcher though, that's the key, that's what determines whether the show will be good or not. LoL has a very "modern" lore with a diverse cast and new world values written in, everything is colorful and edgy and the showrunners like the material and are therefore willing to have passion and make something good. Meanwhile, the lore of the Witcher, the books, the games, etc all of it is very old world, old very values, very based material, written by someone with a "realistic" fantasy world in mind, that's why the characters are complex and deep, so of course modern writers wouldn't like it and therefore won't write a good show for it. Basically, Hollywood has proven to us time and time again that if the lore of the series doesn't share their modern values and outlook on the world, then they aren't going to do a good job bringing it to the big screen. period.

It's sad because the thing I enjoy most about Sapkowski's writing is his characters. The Netflix writers looked at the bare "lore" elements, saw Elves and Dwarves and thought "I've seen those before. I could write a fantasy story with those in it." That's Blood Origin - a poorly conceived pointless "prequel" to a series it barely references or adds to. If you want to know more about the conjunction of the spheres event mentioned in the Witcher show just watch a youtube video of a fan explaining it, because if you were confused before Blood Origin sure isn't going to clear anything up for you. I feel a sense of profound loss with this IP, because I'm fully aware that the writers aren't ever going to listen to criticism and will continue doing whatever they want despite everyone begging them to stop - every interview where the show runners are questioned about their response to blacklash it's so obvious they have no respect for the people invested in their projects and dismiss every negative reviewer as "racist and sexist because you just don't like seeing non-white, non-male people in fantasy". It's in one ear out the other, I'm sick of companies hiring self-absorbed narcissists who actively look down on the IP's they're getting paid to adapt; there must be so many others who are actually massive fans desperate to make proper, faithful adaptations to the IP's they love but they never seem to get hired anymore. It's just sad, man
