Externally, we are so different. I'm a Black woman in the US, native to Manhattan (don't live there anymore). Internally, every cell in my body resonates with every. single. word. you. spoke. Like you, I'm in the winter of my life - 60s - and through my commitment to expressive arts (a/k/a "hobbies"), walks, surrounding myself in nature (and a couple of decades of psychotherapy), I'm finally living the peace I've always yearned for as a child, teen and young woman. We are soul mates in the fullest sense of the collective human spirit. Thank you for this invigorating post.

People have asked me what I do all day. My husband and I are pensioners. I laugh when this question is asked because there aren't enough hours in the day for us. There is always something to do ( gardening, I am a weaver and own a floor loom -all manual, preserving food). There is always something to learn. We love working on being as self sufficient as possible. We make our own shampoo and soap. We preserve food in different ways. I weave fabric to make all sorts of things with. We have learned to make wine and kefir and vinegar. I can knit. We grow what we can in the garden, including herbs. Every day is planned. It depends on what needs to be done. My husband learned to sew. He was mocked by other men, but he can do it if he needs to. I have helped with a differential in a car. Life is a joy just working at living simply.

I’ve seen what happens when you don’t have hobbies. My grandfather was cruel man and everyone feared him. He didn’t have any hobbies after retirement from working at the VA hospital. He drank himself to death and made everyone miserable but he left money which was the only pro. And now I’m witnessing it again with other family members. Being a 31 year old man now, I’ve made it a priority to do something I enjoy while I’m young. I refuse to live so long being miserable. I do artistic things because the arts where I’m from isn’t appreciated.

Same here. My grandfather was a man of great violence up until his final years. The drink runs deep. My father was able to quit and I've stopped as well after my period. For some reason anger runs in our blood. So I play video games. Draw manga. Read books. I like to hike and play basketball. Having so many passions keeps me here mentally. If it wasnt for my grandmother I dont think my passions would be numerous or even creative. Theres more to life than working and rotting.

I recently lost my mother. She had dementia and I was living with her as her carer. Since she died my whole daily routine has gone and the paid carers, whom I had got friendly with, have stopped coming to the house. For the past few weeks I've had nothing to do but clear out things from the house, but it's hard to motivate myself as I live alone and have no family nearby. I am a church member, but most of the services are in the evening so the days tend to drag. The bright spot in my week is Friday, when I meet up with one of my best friends. We've started going to a craft group which another friend of mine invited me to. I spend a happy couple of hours working on my latch hooked rug and chatting to my friends, and we usually end up having lunch in the hotel where we meet. On the other days I've got into a bad habit of watching TV all morning and fitting in housework during the ad breaks, although I try to get out every day and enjoy going for walks. Am thinking that I will need to start volunteering or doing a course or something to help me through next winter.

@@moulindaccessoire.3072 Geocaching is a game where a person hides a geocache (This can be anything from a tiny container to anything as big as you want) People then log on to the site and find the gps coordinates. If they find the geocache, they sign a log inside and log the find on the game website. People can put ‘travel bugs’ inside the geocache. Players can remove these and leave them in another geocache. I have travel bugs that have been around the world. They are also logged on the website, so you can track them. It is a massive worldwide game with millions of geocaches and millions of players. There are geocaches on top of mountains and even at the South Pole. I found one hidden in the summit cairn of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

I order books from my local library who are so helpful. Although my son in law does the bulk of the gardening for me I still care for the pots and potter in the garden. I've had a hard time creating in the recent years, and I've been trying to figure out why. I knew it was a lack of something, but I couldn't figure out what. Money? Safety and security? A steady job? No...turns out it was love. I haven't felt true love in years and years. But in about a week, me and my boyfriend are celebrating our one year anniversary, and when I think back now I have been more creative the last year than I have for a long time. I’ve had several hobbies including blacksmithing using a forge I built, woodworking and carving, 19th century photographic processes, welded metal art along with found metal and driftwood art. All of these were self taught and many pieces sold through an art gallery. Presently turned my backyard into a tropical garden which led me to propagating tropical plants and making my own planters using an obscure cement process. I agree with you as I see people sitting all day everyday and feel bad for them. Unless you are physically unable to be active and, too me, that is even worse.

I've had times I could not do much of anything due to pain or health issues, but I sketched & watercolor, scrapbooked, baked something (quick and easy and a nice treat with tea at the end of the process), pray for specific intentions, sit in my yard or near a window and watch the birds, etc. Lots of ways to have hobbies, even when you can't be really physical.

We do need interests and hobbies. My sons father in law retired 8 yrs ago. Within a week, he didn’t want to get out of bed, wouldn’t wash or shave. Just sat watching the telly. Him and his wife travelled a lot on holidays, before he retired. That all stopped. Within 6 weeks, he had a stroke, and now has dementia. Him and his wife have not enjoyed one day of retirement. It’s been very sad to watch such a bright, clever, funny man just give up. Me and husband have both retired, and although there’s not a big pot of money for holidays, we go out as much as possible. We walk, garden, book clubs, exercise classes, I knit and sew and crochet, and my husband is always mending or making something. We keep active, and I think that’s the answer. They retired him at the rank of Detective Inspector. He had nothing outside his Police family even his own family found it hard to get close to him so when they took that away from him he saw his life as meaningless, five years sitting in his conservatory reading the paper looking at nothing across his garden. I’ve struggled with depression/mental illness since I was a child, and I think I knew this on some instinctual level. I asked my dad’s godmother to teach me how to knit. I’d sit at our cheap electric keyboard and pick out songs until my parents asked if I wanted piano lessons. I’d spend hours at our family computer and fill entire floppy disks with stories I’d written. I’ve continued doing this throughout my life, added hobby after hobby, because being creative gives me a reason to keep going, even when it feels like I can’t. I made it to 36, and I’m in a much better place mentally, it’s amazing what modern medicine and therapy can do lol. Granted, i don't know your situation, but most hobbies cost little. Motivation will come from the joy of doing it and then accomplishing something. I say this as a poor person on a single income but with countless hobbies. I like to draw - i got a reem of paper and the cheapest pens on the market. It more than does the job. Cheap kids' markers work too. I have 3 bikes that cost me a grand total of £35. I didn't steal them 😎 i found one on the road (because one of my hobbies is rambling, also costs nothing), the second was gifted to me by a friend who upgraded and the third i actually bought second hand. They aren't fancy but do what they are supposed to do - take me out in nature. They also allow me to tinker. I buy additional parts when i can afford them. I buy all my video games when they go on sale under £10. I got a few money tree leaves from a plant at work. Now i have several thriving money trees and a few other succulents that came from a single plant a got for £2.99 some years back. It goes on. I couldn't imagine life without hobbies but both my parents entertained hobbies all their lives, too.

My mom stopped hobbies 10 years ago when my dad died. She drank more and more out of boredom. She is 82, stressed, and has brain degeneration. I learnt hobbies from her. Yet she stopped. I love my needlework. Thanks for the walk in the park. I miss the UK in winter/ spring. I loved a walk in London parks. Ps. Was knitting while listening to you. As soon as I saw your hat and scarf, I said " I bet he made those !". Pebble painting was something I enjoyed years ago. I discovered that putting pebbles into a tin of paint helped mix it (shake the tin). Then I had lots of coloured pebbles and would make designs on them.. I was painting a house and then scrap furniture I found thrown away. So there was always a painting job on the go.

I’m sorry to hear about your mum. We only get one go at this trip, and it will turn out as it is meant to, regardless. My mum is 96 and desperately frail. Life takes its toll and all we can be is support. Ha! This hat and scarf are falling apart with use. I had loads, but gave them all to a charity when I moved off my boat.

I was hoping my mum would get back into painting and drawing when her husband died. Her mother painted sellable watercolours into her 90s. One thing that I didn't know was that different parts of the eye age at different rates. So, your sense of colour fades and everything looks a bit drab. My mum didn't want to build up her hopes of enjoying painting, only to lose it again. She reads a lot (in her mid 80s), keeps one crochet project going at a time, and has a glass of wine once a week.

Then we moved to a council flat and he had to give up the allotment, our dog, the budgies , nowhere to go to take photos and all that was left was his once a month fishing . Eventually he couldnt afford to keep up the fishing and spent pretty much the rest of his life in front of the TV watching toddler TV with my sister. He was gone at age 65.

Honestly I live for my hobbies! Work for me is only there to afford to do them. I am a reenactors and used to study archeology. I have picked up spinning, needle binding, sewing, gardening, , ancient pottery, sculpting, water color painting, creative writing and so much more. And I always finde more things that I want to try eventually, like leather crafting and glass making. And I am sad because I feel like in my lifetime I will not get to try everything in want to because of time/money/space limitations. I rarely know what boredom is. When my grandma lost my grandpa she spend her last 10 years traveling and doing things she loved, because she knew she now had to make a life for herself worth living. She couldn't just despair because he wasn't there anymore. And when she eventually got struck with cancer what she said was "I could now sit here in front of the TV feeling sorry for myself, or I can just keep living as best as I can". So she wheeled herself out on the porch in a wheelchair to cut the roses, and take breaks if needed. I try to live by that wisdom.

Thank you Nigel ☺. You and the comments here have made me think 🤔. Lost my beloved husband Terry back in December 2024, after 54 years together (babies when we wed). He was my love, my life and my soul mate. We had many interests together, and apart, and before he passed he said that I should carry on creating! Keep up with my and hobbies and go to my classes. They say that if you are a creative and you don't create our soul dies .... However, I am struggling, giving that arm chair to much of my time at the moment! Although in fairness I am recovering from a broken shoulder! I have my two fur babies, my Kits, indoor cats, Tally and Luna, to keep me company and I am so grateful for that. I have just looked back at your vlogs and intend to look at some of your passed posts. Sending love, light and bright springtime blessings 🥀🐺🌷🐶 🐾 xx

That is just part of what I do. I watch very little tv, but do watch KZread. My best friend retired from her job at the same time. She does absolutely nothing! I'm 27, I've been through a lot, maybe I've been through more than someone my age should. And I've had enough. I have never felt like I was running through life so fast, having no time to live and experience the beauty of the world around me. I still work, of course, but I've slowed down enough so that work doesn't take up my entire life and I can support myself. My psyche can't stand the rat race, pressure and stress. Slow life and peace helped me calm down and find myself. I must admit that I have different fixations. 😊 For example, now I am crocheting, reading, painting and writing my first book. I recommend everyone slow down a little sometimes. Because life and health cannot be returned. Best regards from Poland. And thank you for this wonderful video.❤

If you're used to praying, i think meditation should come easily. Just take that alloted time to slow down your mind and breathing, without putting too much pressure on yourself to do it "correctly". I think there is a lot of wisdom in some teachers saying that posture itself is meditation. Just slowing down the regular pace of life for a few minutes a day makes a great difference. I also agree about movement. Walking is great but certain routes can be frankly boring, so i encourage people to find the most interesting or varied route in their vicinity. If they like animals, it's fun to visit the cats and dogs in the neighbourhood, which can give you motivation to go out of your way. I have the local cats, several fields and a couple of wooded areas with streams, one of them includes a steep hill with lots of obstacles to navigate. I stay clear of the highly trafficked roads but i do understand it can be more difficult if one lives more central. Still, local parks are there for a reason.

This is how I approach life when I’m feeling apathetic or lacking in inspiration and maybe it will spark someone’s ideas. I do it for 5 minutes. Just 5 minutes commitment to something I don’t think I will quite enjoy. It never fails that 5 minutes evolves into much longer time where I lose whatever was in my mind talking me out of it and soaring with ideas and energy emerges. That sparks conversations with people about my activities, be it gardening or crafting…playing music or sewing and the world opens like an oyster! Other 5 minute possibilities pop into my thinking and life gets more and more Beautiful. I wish you a lovely happy day!

I'm going to be 40 in a couple of years, and I'm happiest when I'm learning new hobbies. I have so many little things that I make, that I usually give them away as Christmas gifts just to clear out a bit of space for the next years batch. My recurring go-to is drawing and painting, but I can't justify the painting too often due to the fumes making me sick and the pollution it can cause. It's not good to wash your unused pallet in your sink. When I learned that I lost a bit of passion for it thinking about the wildlife I had already contributed to poisoning. Watercolor is a fair replacement, but I can't quite get the hang of it, or get affordable paper... Drawing and sketching is pretty safe and enjoyable as I've been doing this since childhood and might just die with a pencil in my hand. That or a crochet hook.
