How Hinewehi Mohi and her daugther changed Aotearoa
Moana and first met Dame Hineweh Mohii at Hato Hohepa school where they both fell in love with singing. Moana went to Hawke's Bay to ask her long time friend Hinewehi what she thinks of her new title and how her music and daughter changed Aotearoa for the better.

It’s hard to believe how much New Zealand has changed. I was born in 1939 and in 1960 left New Zealand to see the world. I’m a pakeha who went to school in New Zealand during the late 1940 nd 1950s I still remember and are haunted by in Primary school in Be.mont School the smallest kid in the class was a Maori kid I think called waha But this is an old memory we were all about 10 years old. One day Waha said something in Maori and the teacher called him to the front of the class and walloped him😂 6 times on each hand with a ruler. He had welts on his hands for the rest of the day. I was then and still unable to understand why he was punished for speaking Maori. Told my father about it that night and he told me it was wrong to be punished for speaking Maori but it was the law at the time. I’m now retired and living in Canada and I don’t remember when I first heard the New Zealand anthem being sung in Maori and English but I was living in thevU.S.A. At the time and I remember thinking how beautiful it sounded. New Zealand has changed for the better. To old and handicapped now to revisit to see the changes so have to keep memories of my last visit in 2007.
