The first Kamen Rider toy I ever owned was a Rider 2, with the red gloves and boots. After that, I got a die cast toy for Rider 2 from Kamen Rider The First. It always came back to Hayato!

Takeshi Hongo may have been the iconic face of the Kamen Rider franchise. But Hayayo Ichimonji is literally the hero of the franchise. The real reason why Kamen Rider stayed on the air for so long.

His character was hastily and swiftly introduced to give the original actor that played Hongo time to recuperate from injuries he sustained from a motorcycle stunt gone wrong. It is possible that the character of Ichimonji was part of the series bible and had been intended to be introduced later In the series, and it's likely the accident just accelerated Ichimonji's introduction.

also, Takeshi Sasaki is a hero off-cam. He saved some people from a burning apartment, and sustained injuries which forced him to be away from showbiz for a long while.

Apparently he went through a lot of strife and poverty after that, since his body was burned. Thankfully, Mr. Sasaki recovered both physically and financially.

During my binge, I spent the entire time just waiting for Hongo to return. But once he did, I began to miss Hayato and wanted to see him more. You just can't have one without the other.

That's exactly how I felt when I started watching the series a few months back! Since episode 14 I been wanting and waiting for Hongo to come back but once he came back for good, I started to miss and think Hayato is more interesting though Hongo is still my favorite

To be honest, Hayato is my favourite Showa Rider, his character is a big contrast to Takeshi, more emotional, more fun, more relatable. I really enjoyed him as the main Rider and his departure from the position of the show lead was sad for me, but the series only became better with every episode since then. It's hard to imagine what would we have if there never were Kamen Rider Nigo at all

his cheerful character is one of the many reasons that made the Kamen Rider show from unpopular to very popular

The entire franchise shift from a one hit wonder into a legendary franchise over Hiroshi Fujioka's injury....not to mention, he continues to portray his Kamen Rider persona up to the Powered Up Version in 2016 feature film Kamen Rider 1. Deep #respect to both pioneers.

Taki also went on to be one of the best characters in Kamen Rider Spirits as well, donning a suit based on Shotaro Ishinomori's Skull Man to try and fight alongside the Kamen Riders without cybernetic enhancements.

hayato started the rider drip. look at this man's clothes!

One reason to like this show: Simplicity. I don't know about everyone else but I simply love the basic fisticuffs done by the hero and villains. Fav kaijin during this tenure: Kanibubbler. I love how Hayato immediately points the bubble firing weapon at the kaijin without hesitation. I don't see this in modern shows where the hero utilize whatever he can grab his hands on instead of sticking to his character weapons.

I agree. I love the Showa Era Riders because their battles with the bad guys feels more like some good old fashioned scraps, not so many special effects and flashing lights and all. I felt more invested and involved as a result - it made more of an impression on me seeing the Rider throw hands and fold a whole squad of grunts before a big fistfight with the kaiju, than seeing a lot of CGI depicting the battle.

@@logicaltips4107 I haven't started watching Ultraman yet - right now, I'm going through Showa Era Super Sentai and Kamen Rider - but I look forward to seeing what modern Ultraman has to offer. The gaudy swords, excessive gimmicks (like the book things in KR Saber or the Eyecons of Ghost) and all the SFX kinda take me out of it. I love that gritty, good-old-fashioned two fisted action.

Did anyone also mention the disappearance of Hongo Takeshi actor in ep 60? It was during New Ichigo, when it was even more popular than the Nigo and right before the 2nd movie came out. The actor DISAPPEARED without explanation. (He wanted to act in other TV show but it was decided that Kamen Rider show will be extended, ended up 98 episodes. It was too long to him and perhaps he protested.) Toei team did not know where he was (until now no one knows). That was the reason that the supposed to be new Shocker Kaijin in Movie 2 FIRST APPEARED in TV episode 66 to buy one week's time since they were trying to postpone the filming of an important episode: The return and defeat of Dr. Death. Then that new kaijin became an old kaijin in the movie (technically be a new kaijin twice). Also, Originally Dr. Death's identity was supposed to be the shark kaijin (it even has the collar of Dr. Death's cape on its neck! It also has a GOLD Shocker Belt.) but that shark kaijin also became a regular kaijin in 67 to buy another extra week of time. Finally, the actor of Hongo decided to come back, apologized, and promised to be a good Kamen Rider until the end. Hence finally they can film the important episode, but Dr. Death's identity had changed from a shark to a squid kaijin in ep 68. (and yes, they add Dr.Death's cape collar on squid kaijin's neck) In those several episodes, Hongo was absented in the show, the FBI Taki took on the main role just like ep 11, the henshined Kamen Rider showed up much more often, just like ep 11-13. and Rider has an obvious different voice just like ep 11-13. Btw the Gold Belt of Shark Kaijin was supposed to be a one time thing for Dr. Death's true idenetity, but they had to change the gold belt into regular afterwards to say that they are powered up Shocker kaijins, and the shark kaijin was only the first powered-up kaijin.

I think Hayato is way underrated, he's way overshadowed and wasn't given the recognition that he deserves just because he's number 2, it's kinda sad. I want him to appear on screen in new series or movies in his human form along side Takeshi. maybe he can also have his Final form like Ichigo.

If you have not watched it already, I highly recommend that you check out Skyrider. Hayato is really awesome in it, and it is the only KR show where he get's his own crossover episodes with the new Rider instead of being grouped with Hongo.

Hayato Ichimonji is THE absolute chad of kamen rider, from stealing hongo's cyclone without tachibana questioning it to rejecting all the advances of the racing club girls, I swear he can do anything and still be super likeable

Hongo received all the spot light only because he was TEN Episodes senior than Ichimonji, (There were 13 episodes for Hongo, but he did not show up at all but stock footage from ep.11-13, the FBI Taki was introduced to cover his plot in one episode.) And at one point, Ichimonji was THE Kamen Rider for 39 (!) Episodes (ep.14-52+Movie 1). 39 VS 10 or 13... He was not Nigo Rider as there was no concept of Ichigo Nigo until ep 40. Ichimonji was simply THE Kamen Rider, a new Kamen Rider.

This was a really good break down on Ichimonji and his tenure as Kamen Rider. I absolutely love the original series. I love both Hongo and Ichimonji separately, but I love it most of all when they team up as The Double Riders. I kind of see them as a package deal, tbh

Honestly, he’s the one who makes the most sense for that chapter in Kamen Rider Spirits where his chapter is the most remembered page of the manga.

A little nitpick that I have with No.2 is that, to set him apart from No.1, they added a single stripe on the Rider suit. That's all good. Until Ichigo gets a redesigned suit with two stripes. It's perplexing (and a bit annoying) that No. 1 has two stripes and No. 2 has one.

I actually liked Hayatos design -the red belt and single silver stripes somehow matched his powerhouse theme more than Hongos white belt dual silver stripe all over the place look.

I hate the stripes which make the costume look a sport wear. The old no. 1 design is the best with it's dark, primitive feeling.

Their first suits were so good the ones at the ending is so ugly & cheap looking and then both having the same exact suit is so stupid

8:13 Now THAT'S some crazy shit, didn't know about it and I've seen both shows though not at the same time. Must've been a great month for the kids who watched both of those episodes back in the 70s. Great video!

Hayato just had this overall swagger about him, cool and collective and like just the best brawler. When it came to shocker fights with hongo he would out finesse them and use his powers in unique ways. With a lot of hayatos fights he would just go toe to toe with his foes.

Can't wait to hear you talk about other riders as well, especially V3

Goro is kind of underrated, a phenomenal child actor compared to all the other kids that appeared on the show. Hayato has the most pinchable cheeks a grandma could ever love, and I always loved seeing what wild new outfits he wore each episode. Love the guy to the moon and back, bless.

I love Goro. I love Ichimonji. Taki is also underrated, he appeared more than either Ichimonji or Hongo ( nonstop from ep 14-98!). and his fight scenes are more than both of them combined lol He is the pioneer of "No.2 Rider" (in Heisei era) as he helped Ichimonji as a sidekick (No.2) since ep 14 all the way to ep 98 to help Hongo,

In the Manga, Takeshi was almost killed and his body had to be reconstructed, so Hayato filled in for him during that time.

Watched Kamen Rider back in the 80s. Honestly I do not remember much of the series, but I remember the reason Rider 1 originally had to ride his bike to change. The fan on his belt had to spin at certain speed and needed moving air created by riding the bike. Rider 2's belt needed less moving air and the air movement created by him jumping was enough to transform. Didn't Shocker create 5 Kamen Rider copies with different colored scarfs? Probably their best monsters

Although the first 13 episodes and some other details during the series are interesting, but episode 84 is my favorite. It was in this episode that creator Ishinomori Shotaro himself directed and wrote the script. Unfortunately it was the only episode he participated as director and writer, but we can see a lot of interesting things in this episode; basically it's like using elements of the manga in this episode, the differential narrative and memorable camera angles. I would like the creator to participate more in the series, imagine what else he could accomplish.

Lol the more you share about this series the more I want to watch it. It literally reminds me of a live action version of the Devilman anime that was around at the same time with those epic attacks lol

Fun Fact : Hayato's actor played as another tokusatsu hero Grounzel from 1977's Uchuu Tetsujin Kyodain

I often wonder how this franchise would have gone if Hiroshi Fujioka had never had his accident and the character of Hayato was never introduced. Would they have continued having Rider transform by having wind enter his belt? Seems crazy to imagine this series without "Henshin!"

The Western superheroes to which I often compare Rider Ichigo and Rider Nigo are the Barry Allen and Wally West versions of the Flash. I feel that Hongo is like Barry Allen to Ichimonji's Wally West.

Is it me or is Showa era tokusatsu much more overtly political than later eras? Showa era Godzilla dealt with environmentalism and criticized imperial Japan, Showa era Ultra Series dealt with the Cold War, and Kamen Rider literally had discount Hitler.

I think it comes down to it being strictly made for a japanese audience initially and less need to worry about hurt feelings since the target audience wouldn't really be aware/fully understand.

Nigo, the original secondary Rider. I adore how Kamen Rider Zero Two was basically a Nigo homage.

He was simple THE Kamen Rider, or the new Kamen Rider until around ep40. The concept of Ichigo and Nigo did not really exist until ep 40. And before that, no one knows if Hongo could recover and return.

I love watching ep14 -52 of the original show too

It was so long time ago I can hardly remember if I've watched Hongo or Ichimonji. But if my memory serves me right, at 1st I was skeptical, but it turns out Ichimonji episodes were more entertaining. I thought I might not like the change, but I did. Again, it was so long ago, I think I'm still blurred about the episodes. But 1 of the things I remember, I like how darker Hongo episodes were. Ichimonji was more fun & resembles to much of the latter riders, but Hongo was darker.

8:11 What's really funny is that both of these stories were preceded by an earlier Kamen Rider episode with the same exact plot, beat for beat. Quite a few Kamen Rider episodes at this time copied earlier episodes, so much that I wonder if there was something like a writer's strike or staff changes causing it.

3:20 the only time Nigo Rider with a white belt. Because the package and CM are of NIgo Rider, the toy belt used Ichigo's design.

I introduced Kamen Rider 1971 to my kids during the pandemic shutdown, we finished V3 Kuuga W and we’re now watching Kamen Rider Black

During this phase, i feel that the series are getting too generic and formulaic as a superhero tokusatsu series. I still prefer the first part of Takeshi Hongo rider as it offers unique atmosphere and those chaotic camera works. But I do agree that this is a necessary direction that Toei has to take in order to attarct the younger viewers and ensure the continuation of the series. I still love the OST and Sasaki's role as Ichimonji tho., they are just so cool.

MCU Kamen Rider : - Ant theme. - Can connect comtrol with ants. - Ability change of size from smaller or bigger. - Vehicle using van. - Side kick 2nd rider is female Wasp can fly & shoot blaster.

Nigo's henshin will always be my favourite with the whole body sequence... Too bad that they shorten it after that 😔😔😔

one of my favourite episodes (probably because I'm all about the kaijin) is the one with Isoguinchackku, the sea anemone monster!

I always felt a really awkward tension whenever Ichimonji or the trio of girls were on screen in their earlier appearances, don’t know why. I still loved this arc, I thought it had a lot of cool monsters, but I think the show got a whole lot more fun/better when Hongo returned

For me, Ichigo and Niigo are like Barry Allen and Walley West. Barry established everything, and Wally took over and perfected everything. It's the same here.

Ichimonji was the true hero on making Kamen Rider for Toei! His legacy will live on inside us and Kamen Rider will keep on fighting evil!

Ichimonji is a true hero, not only saving th show from low rating of Old Ichigo ark. Ichimonji's actor also insisted to return the role to Hongo, as promised, even Toei wanted him to stay and to have Double Riders in every episode. But he said this woul dmake Hongo to look like him sidekick, (as in episode 52). So he returned the show to him and promised to help out from time to time. For me, this is a true hero!

Can't wait for you to get to the last third of Ultraman Leo. That stuff is about the wildest that the showa series got.

As of now I'm watching the heisei era of kamen rider and I gotta say I'm loving it a lot. I need to thank my friend for introducing me to Kamen Rider

Grew up as those kids who roll play with other kids as beat em ups because of Kamen Rider. hahah! Only had V1, 2 & 3 then skipped to Kamen Rider Black also had the Kamen Rider Super-1 in my region. Didn't get to watch V4, Amazon, Stronger & one more of the classic riders here.

Ngl, when I got to Nigo's debut episode I was like "Ayo what? Who's this guy? Where my boi Hongo Takeshi at?" Nevertheless I ended really liking Hayato as Kamen Rider. He's great. Still popped off with hype when Hongo came back lol.

i know otherside of his character from manga kamen rider spirits, as a photojournalist he often traveling and one day he come to war zone. his cheerful and funny personality because he want to make evryone smiles and happy, and the other thing is when he is angry his scar from his cyborg operation will appear and he will look like a "monster" and that's he hated the most. and in this manga he's so badass he had a nickname "El Diablo" and oen time literaly punch a tank shell fired at him barehanded

In episode 14 the grittiness were toned down in order to avoid cancellation after the first actor injured his two legs during a motorcycle stunt and plus it was the right thing they toned it down because the early episodes of the classic masked rider tv show are deemed "too realistic".

Hayato Ichimonji is my favorite Rider in the entire frachise, followed closely by Hongo and Kazami (V3).

Up until ep 40, Ichimonji was not Kamen Rider "Nigo", but THE Kamen Rider ( The concept of "Ichigo" did not exist neither).

Before Vice Philip and Yuki there was Hayato sharing main rider roles.

i personally never liked Hayoto over Hongo, I skipped the entire episodes arch of Hayoto and continued watching from after the ep 52 "restart" with Hongo return instead. This video might have changed my opinion on him, definitely gonna give his arch an actual watch now.

It's pretty random but a standout episode for me before the return of hongo, would probably be episode 19 where hayato takes on kanibubbler. Idkw, just really liked that episode and it had a nice ending sooo, have to say that was a fave from this period of episodes

Tbh i appresiate hayato but i profer takeshi hongo as he loved the darker more serious theme. I loved when takeshi came back and i didnt mind him being more happy, it feels like his work in europe helped him to come to turns with himself and being s cyborg and i loved that tbh

Ichigo has 2 white lines in his sides and nigo has 1. Nigo before his upgrade had more of a black geeen in the helmet and a white part in the middle.

This is about as far into the original series that I've seen and its hard to imagine Julio over on Kamen Rider Revice is loosely inspired by Zol of all people. Well his monster form is anyway.

And until now.. i still want to watch "Kamen Rider The First and The Next" series.. or they became "Showa Remakes" with others Showa's Rider.. Amazons was a good "reboot/remake" or continuation because also hint about 'Original'..
