How hard is it to register a garage built supercar?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Eric McClellan ( / gearheaddaily ) gave himself a year to build an SLC from the ground up. When he was done, the big hurdle was getting it titled and registered for street use. It was quite an adventure.

Yeah but the ones with build costs that high are all extremely well done and usually alot not rocking base motors and have fancier transmission set ups like the Ricardo. And essentially compete with cars like McLarens and such. I know for my build plan when I get around to it I'll probably eventually get up to that 200k plus mark. But I'm also gonna eventually get a full carbon body panel kit. I'm likely re gearing the Graziano trans axle. If there's room I'm probably going to be sticking a straight 6 in the engine bay. If not than potentially something like the vw wr12 or a Toyota 1uz type engine balanced for high revs. Along with twin charging the engine. Along with a bunch of other really trick stuff. And having the interior done up to an oem level of finish. And adding traction and launch control. If I can figure it out maybe abs as well. Need to speak with Fran in the future. Really want the dct transmission set up as it means I can drive the car faster given my physical disabilities in my left arm plus talk about power steering. I know there's some issues with power steering due to an oem steering column no longer being made. Also the whole if I can find a wrecked gtr r35 car with a running drive train I wanna see if it'd be possible to salvage it for an slc. The r35 gtr uses a rear mounted transaxle with a front mounted engine for weight distribution. If you harvest most of the drive train but drop attesa it might be possible to use its bits with a rwd only set up and save money on getting a nicely geared transmission with an engine that matches perfectly while getting a dct transmission. Also need to see about the electric builds. Newer batteries should be coming soon. Might be able to use a rich friend to get access to the new updated p1 batteries. New motors are coming. And diy batteries are getting better. Might be able to make a hybrid awd slc. Building mine as a road car but with some vintage meets modern in the concept of the build. Road legal race car like an f1. Raw and visceral but with enough tech to keep it on the road safely and able to be pushed to its limit. Something I could take and run endurance races with but also hillclimbs and other shit. Not exactly dialed for anything in particular just over all performance. Gearing it for a top speed that's around 310mph. Tryna set a Texas mile record lol. But with the gear spacing and ratios set up to work nicely with the engines rpm band and how it makes power. Probably gonna end up like an 05/06 Ford gt and hit 60+ in first gear if you wind it out, but geared so for fastest acceleration you don't shift to second till after 60. Even if I go with the heavy vw engine for the exotic bit. The extra weight is a decent bit and even having to add extra weight to counter the off set in balance it should still easily be sub 3000 pounds and I really shouldn't need more than about 600 to 1000hp for a high boost setting. If I can get the I6 to work I save a decent bit of weight. 1uz I get crazy revving and shouldn't throw off the balance too much. Worst case throw a 4 cylinder Honda in the thing or go with that company that makes V8s from custom blocks using 2 Honda heads. Vtec v8 would fit the slc pretty well and should be easy to get hp out of and rev stupid high like Hondas with vtec do. Even at 200 to 250k even 300k. I mean. That's what certain basically stock special specs of an r34 would cost you. Or some stock mclarens and ferraris. By that point the slc is a monster with a done interior and fairly high levels of oem type integration. Sometimes even nicer than oem. It's a little tricky cause they are kit cars but its the same as a resto mod in alot of ways. Especially the really custom restomods. With the right aftermarket ecus and other shit and correct choices and placement for the interior you can make it look very oem or better. Dudes have figured out aftermarket seats that fit in the slc. Including ones that have heating and stuff. Getting it redone while an added expense means you can match it to anything. If you go through the whole process you can even use stock ecus for engines. Dude has a chevy pedal hooked up to the BMW v10 swapped slc. Pretty sure same for the merc v10 swapped slc.. But like 60k kit cost. 10k for the Graziano think it was like 10k rebuild with new gears. Rven if you drop 30 or 40k on say a 3 rotor. 20k on forced induction. 20k interior. 10k ecu and other bits. Couple grand on fuse relay solid state switch boxes that reduce weight and make wiring easier and help with diagnostics. 10k in paint. Maybe 10k to 20k in tuning and programming. You've got a car like 1000 pounds less than average suoer cars. Even heavy it's like 300 to 800 pounds lighter than light examples. Makes similar power to weight. Geared however you want. Your power plant choice. You gotta keep comparisons apples to apples as much as possible. Slc is like a built car from the get go.

Be careful about bringing your kit cars to Texas. I had an out of state issued title to an Ariel Atom. Registered & re-registered in Texas for 4 years without incident. On the 5th year, it was denied renewal and Texas revoked the registration AND title. They put a legal restraint on it so it couldn't be re-titled in another state. The Atom was originally registered in Colorado, transferred to Texas, transferred to Montana, and finally transferred back to Texas when I purchased it. If anybody is considering bringing a kit car to Texas, make sure it's registered to your LLC in Montana!

I had to have an inspection done by the DMV & state police after rebuilding my truck after the insurance totaled it due to a flood and I sucked up a bunch of water. Blew the engine and they totaled it. Ended up getting back 90% of what I paid for it 10 years prior. Shrewd negotiator, indeed! So after replacing the engine, I had to take all of the same stuff to the DMV plus something from work showing we installed it professionally and it was a sound repair. They gave me a little grief about something I can't recall and I ended up coming back the next day. Get to the state police with all of my paperwork and they look at the vin, pop the hood and look at the engine for 10 secs max and we went back in. Done in about 5 minutes. Couldn't have been easier. Ended up rebuilding the front end with the money left over from the buyback and replacing the engine + paying 2 guys at work to do it on a Saturday. I made out like a bandit on that deal.

Yep, In Australia (south Australia at least) the vehicle must be approved by an engineer for any large mods (I’m currently doing engine swap, brakes, suspensions and loads of custom work). The engineer can choose to have the brake tested and you have to pay for track hire of certain tests. Then it must be inspected and then a full going over by the appropriate people.

I'm planning to spend good money on sound deadening but haven't been able to find good info on which platform is better is terms of sound deadening potential. Had similar issues in Canada when importing/registering a japanese car since they don't have VIN's and use Chassis numbers (Which IMO is alot better system I think) Place was completely clueless what to do without a vin, ended up convincing them that chassis number is viable after they called numerous high ups

  • @chubbysumo2230

same issue here in MN actually, because if the VIN isn't 13 digits long, their system refuses to accept it, and you have to actually mail in stuff and go present the vehicle to the main DMV office in St Paul so they can verify whatever number you are using and where it is.
