How Guilty Gear Was STOLEN from Arc System Works (and how they got it back) | Drzuul

Guilty Gear is Arc System Work's most successful franchise but did you know there was a time during the 2000's where they didn't legally own the game they created? Guilty Gear was stolen! And I'm going to tell you how it happened.
Music Used:
Touch and Go - Tekken 4
Elegant Summer - Melty Blood
Holy Orders (Be just or be dead) - Guilty Gear: The Missing Link
A Solitude That Asks For Nothing In Return - Guilty Gear X
Keep Yourself Alive III - Guilty Gear 2: Overture
Rebellion II - Blazblue Chrono Phantasm
Heavy Day - Guilty Gear Xrd Sign
I've had the idea for this video in my head for awhile. I finally forced myself to do some research and wow I actualized the video!? Crazy how that works. It's crazy to think something you created can be taken from you so easily. The turn around on this video was super quick! I wrote the script in record time and recorded on the same day. I recorded a ton of guilty gear footage that I didn't use but that just expands my archive of footage if I ever need it. I will defiantly need it though because I used a lot of old gameplay in this video which made the video making process go much smoother. If you watch to the end you'll see something that may or may not be a teaser for the next big video project. I'm really happy with how this one turned out so I hope you enjoy it. Don't you worry though the next video is already decided and I'm already working on it so please look forward to it! Anyway description ramble over, thanks for reading/ watching I apricate you all :D

Arc losing the rights to some of the Guilty Gear characters at that time was the best thing that happen to me, since it led to the creation of BlazBlue, with the lastest installment titled " BlazBlue Central FIction" is a game that is arguably just as complex as "Guilty Gear XRD Revelator," with the game like Revelator having legacy skill, meaning if you haven't stuck with the game since the original back in 2008 you have a MASSIVE hill to climb in learning frame data for each character's normals, gatlings, and overall mobility options that can be used on offense and neutral. Then there are the game's plentiful system mechanics, such as having a half a dozen options on defense that you need to master such as having four ways to block based on specific scenarios for example, and the game having a multitude of wake up options with each having a specific use, and that's not even going into the Drive mechanic, which is a unique action for each character, which there are OVER 35 of, which MOST of the cast plays VASTLY DIFFERENT from each other. Mainline BlazBlue games were HUGE in japan, with it being popular in many Japanese arcades, and as Majin Obama stated in a podcast with Blasted Salami that the series had at one point been up there even with the almighty Tekken in terms of popularity. With many veterans like Dogura ( who is one of the best players in Guilty Gear who uses Slayer) and Fenrich ( who is arguably the best BB player, and currently one the best in DBFZ) representing the series for a long time . Sadly, The series just never took off over here in the west. However, the lack of popularity nationwide doesn't equate to the game's quality. The fact that is arguably the most unique AND complex 2D fighter on the market, but isn't talked about hardly at all in the west was always baffling to me. Especially when I read comments, and watch videos of people in the FGC complaining about how boring fighting games have gotten recently, or how easy it has become and yet will REFUSE to give the game a try. Thankfully, that seems to be changing, for instance Lord Knight, a tournament player who plays a variety of different fighting games recently made a fighting game tier list and put "BlazBlue Central Fiction" near the top, as well as popular Guilty Gear content creators like Majin Obama saying on blasted salami's podcast that "BlazBlue Central Fiction" is HARDER than Guilty Gear Xrd. Even Punk, one of the BEST players in Street Fighter 5 said BlazBlue was among his favorite series. For those who want to see high level game play in order to get a grasp of how hype this game can potentially be for you, I'd recommend a video titled "BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Grand Finals - Evo 2014" on youtube, and while the game represented there is not Central Fiction, I think it works, since Central Fiction is more of an evolution of Chrono Phantasma any way. Other channel's include "Burst Recap" and "Jourdal" for more high level Japanese play. Finally, BB TAG and mainline BlazBlue games are two SEPARATE things all together, with BBTAG having it's own set of rules with the system mechanics, and SIMPLIFYING ALL of the characters. It's for these reasons that you can't approach "BlazBlue Central Fiction" in the same way that you would BBTAG.

I don’t have much experience with blazblue I missed the boat and landed on the xrd train. I’m inclined to agree blazblue is harder than xrd with it’s extremely unique characters. That being said I I foresee blazblue’s future as being a hazy one. If we take strive into account I doubt the next blazblue will retain its complexity. Also the recent comments from arc system work’s about not wanting blazblue and guilty gear to compete doesn’t fill me with confidence. As for why people don’t give the series a try that can be explained easily. The latest entry of blazblue is a couple years old at this point and I think you can agree that the series is currently dormant. In my observation the fgc tends to gravitate towards what’s new regardless of quality. There are exceptions of course see DNF duel. I believe it having no clear future is a contributing factor to its current unpopularity. Another factor is the barrier of entry which I would argue is the same If not harder than xrd probably closer to plus R. The game is very complex which creates a high learning curve, once you reach the top there is a lot to enjoy but the climb is difficult especially for newcomers to the genre. Speaking of newcomers there’s also the fact that blazblue has a heavy anime art style which can be a turn off depending on the person. It’s for these reasons why I think currently blazblue isn’t played. As for why it never took off in the west that’s a different topic and I might make that a video at some point as I feel like it could make a good companion piece to this video. I agree completely with your points on BBTAG both should be treated separately. Despite my lack of investment in the series I can appreciate high level gameplay. Thanks for commenting it was an interesting read.

@@Drzuul " Speaking of newcomers there’s also the fact that blazblue has a heavy anime art style which can be a turn off depending on the person." Mind explaining what you mean by anime because in my opinion both "BlazBlue Central Fiction" and "Guilty Gear XRD REV" are similar in that regard. For example, Both games have characters their wear clothes with unnecessary accessories, such as the belts on Sol and Ragna. Additionally, both games also have character stereotypes seen in many other anime , which again, look at Sol and Ragna to see what I mean, since both characters are delinquents with foul mouths that have red as their theme. Next is the fact that both games have convoluted story lines with retcons and plotholes. Finally, both games feature a hefty amount of fanservice, with MANY of the female cast being heavily sexualized. Examples include but are not limited to: Baiken, who has has an outfit that highlights her cleavage and has a walking animation where she puffs out her huge breasts proudly. Then there's I-no, who is a character with another provocative character design who has a win animation where she takes her top off. The last example I'll five on the GG side is Elphelt, who is a character who shows cleavage and has a win animation where she pulls out a document in between her huge breasts. In the case of BlazBlue, theirs Makoto stripper outfit, and whatever Mu-12 turns into during a match lol. Overall, any criticism in regards to BlazBlue being to anime can ALSO be applied to Guilty Gear IMO. The only thing GG has that sets it apart from many anime and games is more unique character designs, but just because a design is unique doesn't automatically make it good, at least in my opinion. For instance, Bedman is a unique character design not seen in any fighting game prior, but at the end of the day it's just a slim dude in a bed, which to me is kind of lame. In the end, what you consider to be good character design all boils down to personal preference, so there really is no right or wrong here. "The latest entry of blazblue is a couple years old at this point and I think you can agree that the series is currently dormant. In my observation the fgc tends to gravitate towards what’s new regardless of quality. There are exceptions of course see DNF duel. " "BlazBlue Central Fiction" being old didn't stop new players from playing the game though, as we did get a flux of new players playing the aged title after the rollback update, and it currently averages around 300 people playing the game CONSISTENTLY on steam. But even if that wasn't the case, just because a game has a small player base SHOUDN'T stop anyone for enjoying the title if your basing you playing a fighting game on whether it's dead or not, since as long as you have SOMEONE to play the game isn't dead. And niche but dedicated players to a fighting game isn't just unique to BBCF either, with games like Melee, and Third Strike, which are two games that haven't been updated in DECADES but still have a small yet STRONG community who are just as passionate about the game as when it released. Personally, if you stop playing a game because you can't be bothered to to hop on discord to find a match, or because you see your favorite influencer quit, then to me you weren't willing to rock with the game in the first place. "Another factor is the barrier of entry which I would argue is the same If not harder than xrd probably closer to plus R. The game is very complex which creates a high learning curve, once you reach the top there is a lot to enjoy but the climb is difficult especially for newcomers to the genre. " I don't think the difficulty of the game is the reason for the game's lack of success here in the west, since "Tekken 7" has one of the largest player bases, and is also a fighting game that is IMO not only more difficult than BBCF, but is also the hardest fighting game period, with TONS of legacy skill ( with characters having over a 100 moves built steadily across previous installments). Yet despite this daunting mounting of information needed to play the game at a competent level, it STILL found success. I think the reason "Tekken 7" succeeded where BBCF fell is do the fact that the game had a bigger marketing push not just from the developers and publishers, but most importantly, from MAJOR influencers like Maximilliandood. BlazBlue just didn't have that kind of marketing push do to many factors including the stigma the game had at launch of being a poor mans Guilty Gear, when that couldn't be further from the truth, as both games have MANY systems and mechanics that work differently from one another, from the throw system, to getting off the ground when knockdown , etc. And while MANY players have come around to see the unique and complex strengths of the game similar to how Japan did, it was too little to late by then. This combined with to what as you pointed out the popular criticism of the series that " its way too anime" (which by the way is hypocritical, since the people who are saying that about BB were also fans of Guily Gear and the Melty Blood visual novel ) sealed the BB's fate as a niche series. "Thanks for commenting it was an interesting read." Glad you enjoy the post!

@@lapis3965 in regards to blazblue being too anime. Blazblue obviously has a heavy anime influence which turns some people off it’s the same case for guilty gear, melty blood, under night inbirth, and many others. Just because a game has a small player base it shouldn’t stop people from playing it but unfortunately it does. The average person doesn’t want to learn to to motion inputs so asking them to join a discord to play the game they bought is a lot to ask. Tekken 7 is in the spot it’s in because of its legacy. Tekken been popular since tekken 3 so the reason why so many play is because people are familiar with the franchise, the remember playing tekken on ps1 or ps2. It’s like street fighter in that regard it will always be popular because of the name recognition despite it’s completely. I don’t think influencers have a substantial effect on what fight games get played. All of this blazblue talk is making me want to play but for someone like me I just don’t have the time to play another complex fighter when I’ve got Lumina, KOF and +r on my plate. It’s a shame I never got into it but I’m sure blazblue will have it’s time to shine again and when that day comes I’ll be there.

6:47 Slight inaccuracy, it's Sammy that bought Sega and created Sega Sammy Holdings, and making Sega and Sammy subsidiaries of that company. (They only put Sega's name first cause Sammy were associated with gambling, so putting their name first wouldn't have been good PR).
