“Exercise contagion in a global social network”, Sinan Aral & Christos Nicolaides. Nature Communications, 2017.
The Global Positioning System, or GPS, is changing the sport of running. Using GPS makes it easier to track, analyze, and share data about your runs. Some people, like Gene Lu, use the technology to create elaborate drawings, but you don’t need to be an artist in order to use GPS to improve your running.
Researchers at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted a study and determined that runners who share their efforts on social networks tend to run farther, faster, and longer than those who do not. With GPS, it’s easy to track and share data about your run. Along with the proliferation of GPS technology, the number of fitness-focused social networks has also increased. Now, runners have many options for where they can go to share their runs: Strava, Nike Run Club, MapMyRun and many others have all made sharing your run easy by developing mobile apps that users can download to their phones.
Whether you’re like Gene, who uploads elaborate runs mapped to look like Darth Vader, or just using the app to track your daily jog, social network sharing, made even easier by GPS tracking, can help you improve.

"3/10th of a kilometer", you know what else is 3/10th of a kilometer? 300m, that's how the friggin' metric system works.

lol, at least they use metric ! But I do agree x/10th of a km is really weird. More like 0.3 km , near half a km. Any case, 300m is most appropriate

It’s probably purposeful. Especially when talking to people who don’t know the metric system that well, if I say “yeah, I ran a .3 of a kilometer more today” vs “I ran 300 meters” we think of that as not that long
@Rohrkrepierer

It's not long at all.
I think it’s less of a vanity aspect and more of good-hearted spirit of competition. For me, seeing runs posted on social media motivates me to push myself - it’s inspiring to see other runners’ statistics.
Strava has a feature where it creates a large and randomly centred "dead zone" around your start-stop points so it's impossible to find those exact locations. I think this about how much data a person is willing to share without thinking about it, rather than how much data is maliciously taken from them.

GPS tracking and online leaderboards is also a much better introduction to a sport than the physical reality. There's less potential embarrassment for a new user to feel and allows them to become comfortable in a "safe space" before, say, joining a club or taking part in an organised race.
How much satisfaction can working out really bring you if you are just doing it to get some likes? What happens when no one notices? This obsession with what other people will think about what we do is so huge that we need to be validated for everything we are up to, how can we stay sane if we are pushing ourselves into doing things just for superficial reasons?

Likes on social media is not the only reason for working out. Your body is programmed to release a large amount of dopamin after a workout. That „high“ you get from sports, which can last up to a whole day, is the real reason why people keep doing those runs. It’s like a more healthy drug. But sure: The likes can help too.
@drazgul9403
5 жыл бұрын
As killer said, our body wants dopamine. It was already proven, that likes and comments like:" Wow, amazing, :O" also let your brain produce dopamine, so you get addicted and work out more.
I like how I can look up run data months after a particular run. It's cool.
Isn't it more the soldiers fault that they used Strava in a military base than Strava's fault for releasing the data? One would imagine the US army had a rule prohibiting the use of personal mobile devices while on duty/in a base.
@jacobsmith972
5 жыл бұрын
Active duty personnel often live on the military bases their stationed at, so that’s where they’d do a good bit of exercise for convenience sake. A military base is pretty much a self contained town. Still, the military should probably address the potential security hazard that gps tracking poses and maybe lay some restrictions on it on base.
@Cimlite
5 жыл бұрын
Who cares, it's not like every major nation on the planet doesn't already have that information through satellite mapping. If you want to hide your military base, put it underground... anything on the surface is already known to the world. Just silly to pretend it's somehow hidden just because they said so.
@kevinoneill4490
5 жыл бұрын
The soldiers listed their runs as private, so nobody could look up their individual locations. But Strava published everyone's data together-- including private runs-- so people could deduce that a bunch of runners in a tiny part of Afghanistan (or wherever) corresponded to a military base.

"listed their runs as private," I think I'll stick to my GPS app that just stores everything locally thanks.
I started doing this around thanksgiving, my runs have been slower because of checking on the route but it's so much easier to finish all the miles when there is an fun end goal that isn't just a number
I've been doing this for about 10 years; so it's great to see this trivial idea being covered. Everytime I did a drawn run, I'd spell out a friend's name for their birthday. It was to honor a friend in my highest regard yet motivation to become fit.
For me, someone who uses lots of apps for recording workouts, calorie intake, vitamins, and body composition... Stats about activity and health in general are motivating... It can take some time to feel results, but to see numbers changing, you know what you're doing is working. I feel great seeing an increase in strength lifting a certain weight, speed, or higher Vo2 max... a lower resting heart rate... That stuff keeps me going just s much as seeing or feeling physical results.
I use my GPS watch to run for the first time this Cross Country season, and this year I preformed way better than last year. Last year, I only beat my Personal Record (PR) in two races. This year, I kept beating my PR in almost every race. The boom happened after I started running races with my Garmin 4Runner.
That feels intuitively right, competition makes you better

Gotta admit, that title at the beginning was probably one of the most creative I’ve seen on this channel.
In pulsemeter watch world GPS came in as crucial addition to running performance metrics and it wasn`t all about the data, it was all about performace and it`s measuring.
Hi, figured the privacy part when I first started using Strava. Therefore I have always made it a point to start my run/cycling from a fixed point, away from my home.

I have to use a GPS watch everyday. How else will the coach know my splits?
@RobinClower
5 жыл бұрын
Back in my cross country days, we'd have one or two days a week where our coach actually cared about splits (intervals, tempo runs, actual races) and we'd have to do those on a track or a small closed loop course. We'd start our run at the same time and the assistant coach would write down on a sheet your splits as you came through the finish line. Then the other days we just ran normal runs for distance or maybe tempo runs where the coach just assumed you were trying. Maybe for the top runners he'd have them wear heart rate monitors so he could track their exertion.
Trail running, people. You don't need to track or post anything, because it's actually enjoyable.

Great idea to test!
The social media part isn't the main motivator for me, it's more the stats. If my phone's GPS is screwy and unable to track my pace then I don't get those updates every kilometre on how fast I'm going, so I can't really compete against myself and end up going slower than I would have with GPS.
What's wrong with sharing your running status online? It's like sharing how much you ran in real life.people congratulate you,with then inspires you,you're more healthy,ect. It's just showing your accomplishements on a platform where everyone can see I don't see anything wrong with it. it's probably because I'm a extrovert and like sharing my stuff.
I wish I could find an app like that but for driving. Driving a few hours a day and different places everyday, I think it would be interesting to see what I end up with
Vox, Great presentation. May I know if you are Geography major? You often use geographic data in your presentation. Way to go.
I use GPS to track all my running and biking. I’m doing for 2018 km this year.
It also makes you an easy target I hope everyone's safe, not doing the same route everyday
Why does everything have to be shared on social media? Do your thing, be proud of yourself, live your life.
good reason to avoid social media. useless info cluttering up my life. WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER CARE about you going out for a run?
Wouldn’t these intricate GPS mappings/drawings of your run be most ideal in North American cities where a lot of the urban planning is in a grid pattern?
I love this video. Nice job.

Cool thumbnail! The runner jumped off a bridge and ran through a bunch of buildings!!
There’s more to measuring performance than distance, time and speed. Running a mile on a flat street vs running a mile on a technical trail with 600ft of elevation gain.

ankan555 I’ve never heard of anyone using that. Everyone I know uses Strava.
Nice! What's the best app to do this?
Any gps fitness apps anybody would like to recommend for android.
I must be one of the 20% who doesn't use GPS. I do use a polar heart rate monitor which I think is more useful data to measure improved fitness over time. And if I run a new route I can check it on googlemaps (like www.gmap-pedometer.com), or I can plan a route online and use landmarks for mile markers so I don't have to think on any of my half dozen regular routes. My impression is only people with low self-esteem need to post their training runs on social media, and if clicking like makes them happy, that's nice. If I post things, it would be actual race results. I do know friends now with fitbit watches and phone apps that share so they compete for steps per day and such, and it seems motivating to them.
how can the be 3 variables be distance, time and speed, when speed = distance over time
I think this vid brings up a contemporary issue, where a lot of people are 'living for likes' in social media. I'm glad It motivates people to accomplish stuff, but I don't think 'I NEEDA POST THIS NOW, SO I COULD GET LIKES' is a healthy way to improve one's self-esteem or whatever you see fit..
If you don't want to give away your privacy while tracking your run. It's probably not good for you if you just start running as soon as you get out the door anyways. I suggest doing a .25 mile warm up and cool down without the GPS on. More exercise and more privacy. Winning.
This feels like an example of correlation doesn’t mean causation.

Please explain to be how many Kenyans and Ethiopians use GPS to become better runners. Misleading title.
The doodling thing is a lot easier if you are in a city built on a grid rather than a rural village with only a handful of roads designed by mediaeval sheep herders.
For all the haters of technology in the comment section, don't use GPS for running if you feel its not good for you. Stop judging others. Innovation will not stop.
what app did he use ?
What about a “postpone post publication to (random value) 7 days from now” button? Could partially save some privacy! (Because I’m not telling to the world I’m out of my house right now, and potentially not telling my routines)
So, really, social media is helping you run better. Also, trade off: a sense of having to/wanting to run to impress my friends, for the reveal of your home, and the times you are usually not at that home, which anyone can use for whatever purposes.. wow, would not put those on equally weighted sides of the scales.
