For those who never saw him play or caught him at the tail end of his career and look at his overall career stats and wonder why Kobe gets so much adulation and love from the older generation, let me give you some context. Between 1999 and 2013 (his starter and pre-achilles tear years in the NBA), Kobe averaged 27, 6 and 5, 5 rings, 2 FMVPs, 11 first teams, 9 defensive first teams all while being must see TV every single night and respecting the fans by trying to play every game he could. That is one of the greatest 15 year stretches in basketball history and that is why he gets so much love and respect.

Same, i wish i had a chance to see Mamba play 10 years sooner.

His biggest weakness was himself. He was so obsessed, he never rested. Someone needed to force him to let his body recover. He probably wouldn’t have had as many minor injuries leading to more major ones down the line. But at the end of the day, that’s Kobe. He left everything on the table. I’m very thankful to have witness this mans greatness.

I'm guilty of hating Kobe during the "ballhog" years. Kobe did an interview once about his ballhog-ness and said its cause his team didn't WANT to shoot the ball so they gave it to him even tho he's tired as hell. Kobe carried his bum teams, for sure. Feel bad for him. Could've had MORE rings if he had average pieces around him that can shoot.

Kobe's athleticism was inevitably fading in 2013 but he was still a monster because he mastered the mental aspect of the game. He made up for it by how smart he was and also how determined he was and still managed to have one of his best individual seasons.

@@showtimenick824 he couldnt do it on both ends as much during that season, he would have to take a lighter load offensively. But yes he caught bodies and was still getting up there on dunks even in 2013. Coach D was asking Kobe to guard younger guards and shut them down at one point, and he was doing it but his offense production had to take a back seat somewhat.

Kobe Bryant also was the definition of being on fire! I've never seen anyone turn up like kobe. Once he makes a couple of shots in a row , best believe it's going to be a long night! We were never out of games because of kobes chances of catching fire, I've never seen anyone who wills his team to winning, and the way he gets on fire and streakiness is beyond any player . Kobe also was shooting curry range before curry made it normal. Kobe be launching 3s from 30ft to half court on daily and was making them! Dude was just a maniac when it comes to basketball. We miss your die hard mentality and the mindset of working to hard! RIP 🙏

Imagine if Shaq had the same work ethic as Kobe, I think they would have dominated until early 2010's.

Because of the broken index finger, it's worth noting that Kobe had to adjust his shot in season by having the ball roll off his middle finger instead of his index finger. That's a bigger adjustment than those who never played at a high level realize.

Hey mine was in 09 and 10. He was the reason I fell in love with the sport. Ever since I've been rooting for him and the lakers to win his 6th ring. I'm one of those fans that believed in the "big 4" season. Dwight was too injured unfortunately. I cried when he shot his 2 free throws with his Achilles injury.

They were his prime years because his teams were worse. He didn't need to share any of the load with Gasol or Shaq. It's not a coincidence that he had his 3 best seasons when his only solid teammate was Lamar Odom.

AMEN. The media largely hated and constantly discredited him while he was still alive. But they piggy-backed off his death for ratings. Only the players and mostly Lakers fans truly respected him.

Growing up in LA, the early 2000s was a wild time. Kobe was an integral part of what it meant to be an Angeleno. I look back at that time with very fond memories. RIP to the Mamba.

Spent so many nights crying over a man I’ve never even met. I miss him so much and yet he doesn’t even know who I am. That’s how much his inspired me and millions of others. My goat forever. Rest in peace Mamba.

RIP Kobe I wasnt even a Lakers fan but I recognize what he did for the game and I will never forget where I was when I heard of his passing, one of the greatest of all time

I think one reason KB is so beloved amongst fans is that his journey had its ups and downs, and for some reason we root for comeback stories.

I got so obsessed with Kobe that after I play basketball everyday it’s still not enough I feel like I still have to keep going and do better I train day to night it’s exhausting but kobe keeps me up and I will never forget kobe for showing me the greatness of basketball truly a legend!

He’s one of the greats, no doubt. That said, a of revisionist history by your. Walton wasn’t a starter during the reg season and Mihm didn’t even play in the play-offs at all. Smush was obviously bad. Many is the other role players didn’t do much either in their career. Lamar Odom was fantastic, but that was about it. Still. Walton, Mihm and Smush weren’t in the starting line-up at the same time.

Started playing ball the moment i saw Kobe on tv. that was against Orlando in the finals. it changed my life, have finished my education for being a scholar with mamba mentality on the court and on academics. even though my injury hold me back on playing more in college yet my mentality to do more rewarded me latin honors.

He was incredibly insane with his career man & I loved it bec I've been a fan of him since day one and I'm so glad that I got to watch him play in the NBA and do his thing

I barely watch basketball I don't know much about the rules and fouls lol but when I would see Kobe play as my uncle's are big Lakers fans this was back in 2013 he was like different he was always destroying his opponents and always ahead and the work ethic he had was insane. Sadly he passed away but I know he motivated people and changed people's lives like mine as he works ethic and his way of always wanting to win got into me and I'm happy

He had his losses early on and made an oath to become the best basketball player that he could be. In doing so he became the best to ever do it through sheer hard work. His mentality was on par with MJ and he respected the game just as much if not more.

As an Asian immigrant, Kobe has really inspired me to play basketball and be a leader. The day he was gone really took a big chunk of my soul even though he never knew who I was. That's how powerful his work ethic is. Rip Kobe

Kobe has one of the most interesting career stories ever. I literally hated his guts until he got hurt a couple years a row at the end of his career and you could see that it hurt him emotionally. That's when I think a lot of people realized, "Hey, he's actually a real person and he's finally being real." And a lot of people grew to appreciate him more because of what happened at the end of his career. He didn't deserve to go out that way in his NBA career. You felt like he was just hitting his stride as a man as his career ended and he began achieving success elsewhere, and that's what makes everything after very difficult to comprehend. RIP Kobe

The aerial artistry Kobe displayed in his prime is never gonna be matched. There have been more athletic players for sure, but nobody made it look as graceful as Kobe did. A pure artist

I remember going to a Charlotte game as a kid when they were the bobcats and they hosted Kobe and the lakers. Charlotte was giving the lakers hell all game. I fell asleep because it made me upset. But I woke up in the 4th just to see Kobe take over and cash in a buzzer beater to win the game. Greatest experience I ever had. That crowd went silent

Was lucky enough to see him play live and got to meet him once. He was a hell of a player and I'm so happy that he and Shaq got to reconcile before he passed

Thank God for Kobe.. even though he was usually shredding any teams/players I rooted for, I always enjoyed seeing games with him. So frustrating when he shredded everyone I rooted for but he was too good to deny!

I was blessed back in 2013 to get tickets to Sixers-Lakers game, and it was the only time I saw Kobe play live. He put up 34 and had the craziest reverse layup/jumper (not sure what to call it) I’ve ever seen in my life. Crazily enough I almost didn’t go because I already made plans and it was so last minute, but I knew I had to see Kob. Go watch the highlights from that game, it was Mamba at his best. Being in the Philly area, Kobe was always a big deal here. I drive by Lower Merion HS all the time. I used to drive by and be like “wow Kobe’s old high school,” but now it just makes me sad. RIP Kobe.

I would say this Kobe guy was pretty good lol. Never a huge Kobe fan but he was an insane hooper. Definitely top 10 and shouldn't be out of that list any time soon. RIP Kobe you were awesome to watch.
