How GOOD was Frank Shamrock Actually?
When you think about who was the greatest MMA fighter in the 90s, frank shamrock is a name that has to come to mind. The man who became the first ever UFC Light Heavyweight champion, successfully defended that belt 4 times before leaving the promotion to retire at the age of 26. But instead, he came back and won belts in the WEC and Strikeforce. Yet for some reason, his legacy in the sport hasn’t been recognized by many. So how good was Frank Shamrock Actually?

I'm a huge Frank Shamrock fan...but the first modern well rounded MMA guy was Marco Ruas. Frank's genius is that he was both the world class well rounded champion athlete AND HE AND HIS TEAM WORKED OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME THE PROPER WAY TO TRAIN FOR NHB AND MMA. This? Was absolutely everything. Everyone...including Ruas and Ken Shannon...was trying to crack the "well rounded MMA athlete training code"...but Frank did it first. The man was a training innovator and genius in every regard including nutrition [ which he modified from bodybuilding and pro sports ], a marketing maven, authentic groundbreaking well rounded MMA champion, etc.

@@laubachm11he was on roids AND undersized in Japan, and was on roids in some if not all of hid early UFC matches. Back then it was NHB transitioning to MMA, so it was crazy Wild Wild West stuff. Everyone who could afford it was on roids because roids wasn't illegal for competition back then.

Frank was definitely the better one. Ken had a great ground game but Frank actually could compete with the late 90s early to mid 2000s actual like mma. Before hand when Ken was on top it was much more one style vs the other but frank generally had both good stand up and obviously a great ground and submission game. Hence why he could compete with a lot of the more minder ufc fighters of the 2000s

Love the content! Couple of suggestions/ideas: Could you put a little win-loss-draw counter at the bottom of the videos? That updates as you move through their history? It’d be cool to easily tell during a given moment what the fighter’s record was at the time. Likewise, could you put a date on the fights as you recap? Also, an idea for a video series that I would love to see from KK is a history of the belts, the fights that founded them, and then each title match. It would be awesome to see the evolution of a weight class through the history of its champions. Wonderful, insightful commentary and history, Kiiyon. Thank you for your content.

Ken can't be blamed for making 10x more as a mid card wrestler than he could in MMA, but I believe the "Superfight" belt Ken won isn't the same as if he had stayed in for another couple of years and been the actual heavyweight champ. We also could have seen if he would have been competitive in his prime against Randy Coture.

Mayhem Miller could have been Strikeforce Middleweight champion if the time keeper not let the clock run many seconds after the ref called timeout. Damn bro. That was a fantastic synopsis and conclusion you drew. I completely agree. He was revolutionary. I think his KOP background transferred very well into what became a “well rounded” MMA fighter. His submissions were wicked. The scrambles from the bottom and attacks on the legs were something a lot of MMA guys were not used to. Overall, just how quickly he could lock up an explosive submission on any part of the body. Also sidenote- I think today’s submission grapplers should be looking closer at the pancreas history and their focus on attacking the legs. I know it’s kind of talked about as though it only began becoming popular over the last 10 years or so but KOP guys were using brutal legs attacks back in the 90s LOL. Scary AF

One of my all-time favorites. Always under appreciated. So well-rounded, exciting, and great on the mic. He would be mega-huge today. His later career -- though he still racked up some great wins -- was hampered with an accumulation of injuries. He couldn't shoot as well anymore, which was the most dangerous part of his game. Look up the video where he submitted Dan Henderson, as an example.
