How GOOD was Don Frye Actually?
Don Frye is someone that definitely fits the description of what people think an MMA fighter. The man who found instant success in the sport by winning 2 UFC tournaments was known for his exciting battles and tough guy bravado. But after these tournament wins, he never won another and was also unable to capture any major belts. So how good was Don Frye actually?

He's also a legitimately cool guy. About 12 or so years ago, a buddy of mine brought me to a Godzilla fan festival in Chicago which Don was attending as a guest. We happened to get in the elevator together at one point, when I told him "I don't know much about Godzilla, but your fight against Takeyama was one of the most badass things I've seen in my life." He laughed, and in his gravelly-as-hell voice said "well thanks! I'm heading down to the bar in a bit, would you like me to buy you a couple beers?" And he was true to his word. He grabbed a stool next to me at the bar and we chatted for a while about the upcoming (at that time) Forrest Griffin vs Rampage Jackson fight. Seriously, he's an all-around quality guy.

Don was THE prototype MMA fighter, foreshadowing what the sport would evolve into. I was a UFC fan from the start, and was at UFC 7 in Buffalo in '95.
