    *Always* happy to see a CH reveal. Thanks for keeping us up to date. Wow! Has it really been a year?! SuperBaby is quickly moving toward Super______. Toddler? Boy? MiniCAP? I understand that each level of realism they add puts more stress on the CPU, but I would like to see the physics to prevent clipping, allowing all objects to interact with each other. What specifically brought this to mind was the fact that the B-52 wings would break off and clip through the body of the plane. Also, there was a piece/section that appeared to remain suspended in the air after the wind broke off, suggesting that you probably could damage something with the missing wing. Of course, there are all kinds of clipping issues on the ground as well.

    That would be so cool but I don't think it would be worth the effort. Games that tend to have very advanced physics like that also tend to be really buggy.

    I’ve been reading on the HAWK SAM and its many variants and many uses by the countries that adopted it. @@rubiconnn Yes but it’s a rather old version and it would be really cool to have the newest one because it had so many improvements that it basically might as well be a new SAM system (for example, the fully modernized HAWK could even engage up to 12 targets at once thanks to the Low-Altitude Simultaneous Hawk Engagement system), and/or it would be great to see some of the interesting modifications introduced by (and specific to) some of the countries which used it. The different versions of the HAWK would mostly be great to have in Cold War era scenarios to introduce a little variety (i.e. you could give Iran their own version of the system, instead of the American one).

    I bet the next version of those decoys will detect launch's & locks, calculate distance and MER, turn around, go defensive, wait for SAMs to fall from the sky in chase and then turn back in. That will drain SAMs even completely. You guys should try that with a swag of F16s. Work out when to turn and run, then when to turn back in, keep doing it until its out of missiles and take it out. Same deal for SRAD, draw the launch, turn and run, rinse and repeat.

    About the B-52 bombers, your mention about the B-52 Arc Light rain during the Vietnam War against the SA-2s made me wonder if you guys could do an air raid combat scenario involving 1960s/1970s period (i.e. Vietnam War-era and Six Day War and Yom Kippur War era) aircraft and AA weapons? The scenario involves your team trying to defend a B-52 bomber raid against a target defended by the same period AA weapons. It's like a replay of the B-17 bomber and WW2 fighter escort vs. 1960s/1970s AA weapons (both SAMs and AA guns) scenario only this time, it'll involve B-52s replaying the Arc Light bombing raid and having 1960s/1970s fighter support.

    @@aztec0112 Rods from God is one of the worst ideas for a weapon ever. How is it better than having the same KE penetrator on a missile that can be produced in much smaller numbers for the same effect and can be concealed and protected from counter-attack? Orbital weapons have to be deployed in truly vast numbers (thousands if not tens of thousands) to keep response times short enough to be useful and they're easy to track and target because you can't hide space launches and orbital assets are trivially easy to spot, identify and track. The fact that no serious work has gone into implementing such a weapon is a good indication that it's not worth the effort.

    Tow Missiles are no longer Wired Guided, The current generation of TOW missiles are Optically guided and have a range of 4500 meter. The manufacturing corporation (Raytheon Missiles and Defense (Tucson, AZ)) wanted to keep the name TOW as a legacy but the "W" no longer means Wired Guided, instead Raytheon chose to name there missiles "Wireless." The legacy namesake was merely a way to implement an entirely new missile system under the guise of already congressionally approved funding. Despite the deceptive namesake, New TOWs are considerably more lethal than legacy and out of stock original wire guided counterparts.

  • @MaxIsStrange1

    @MaxIsStrange1

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, technically all TOW missiles are SACLOS guided and that hasn’t changed. The difference is that with the TOW-2B AERO version, the launcher no longer uses a copper wire to communicate with the missile, using radio signal instead. An interesting fact about the copper wire versions of the missile is that its range or even the ability to reach the target varied based on the type of terrain between the launcher and the target-if you tried to fire a TOW over a body of water, the range dropped significantly (however, firing TOWs over water was generally discouraged because copper wires without any isolation and water are not a great mix, if I remember correctly). Dense vegetation was also a problem because there was always a chance that the wires could get tangled and snap. So overall, the switch to RF not only increased the range, but it also made it much easier to fire the missile over a range of different types of terrain.

    I think that out of all of those systems, THAAD has the largest capability gap to fill in DCS because Russia has the S-400 and the US equivalent would be the Patriot and the THAAD working together and the system is incomplete without the latter. The second place would go to the Stryker IM-SHORAD which now can be fully modeled since ED has added the radar-guided version of the Hellfire missile, the AGM-114L. The only part missing would be the fully modernized Stinger (most likely the FIM-92K version with added DataLink). The huge benefit to adding the new Stinger would be that CH could then relatively easily modernize all other core game assets that use Stingers by just swapping the default missile for the new one and leaving the 3D model as is.

Ofc the helicopter will get shot down by the SAMs. And there is an even bigger threat for the helicopters: in case to reach the SAM site, they will have to fly over at least a few km of enemy teritory, being under manpad threat, AAA threat and close range SAM threat. An attack helicopter can even be shot down with a 50cal machinegun if it accidentaly flies over.

    A very entertaining and chilling video. Chilling because of the implications of this system if it works as advertised IRL. If the Russians decide to add S-350s to their S-400 sites along with the Pantsirs and other systems like the Buks and the Tors, SEAD/DEAD missions will become a lot tougher for the Ukranians to do. Not impossible, just a lot tougher. And what is CH working on with the Felon? I still want to see a battle between them and the Block-70 Vipers.

    I have this feeling that following the publicly released specifications when modeling Russian systems in DCS might’ve led to ED and modders overmodeling their capabilities. I get that it’s hard to come by credible information about many of those systems and I don’t have an easy answer how to do “fix” it but I truly can’t escape the feeling that Russian systems get a buff just because their government likes to overstate their own capabilities.

    @@Anarchy_420 In the early days of the war both Russian and Ukrainian air defences struggled and underperformed a lot, but it's notable that the kind of easy kills of AA systems seen early on haven't happened for a long while. I think it's a combination of new software, more experienced crews and proper integration - this last one wasn't really possible at first for either side as the Russians were advancing in a pretty chaotic way and the Ukrainians had dispersed their defences to avoid Russian attacks. Once they both had time to set up properly integrated air defence grids, the air over Ukraine became very dangerous for both sides and there weren't any easy kills by TB-2 drones happening anymore.

    NATO assigned codes and codenames to Warsaw Pact weapons as they were discovered. The codes were consistent between types of weapons systems, with the codenames being clearly distinct from each other so one would not be confused with another when spoken over a fuzzy analog voice link. Surface-to-air missile systems got designations that starting with "SA-1" and codenames that start with the letter "G", so for example the Soviet S-75 was the "SA-2 GUIDELINE", the S-200 was the "SA-5 GAMMON", etc. Some systems got multiple NATO designations (the S-300 family includes the "SA-10 GRUMBLE", "SA-12A/B GIANT/GLADIATOR", and "SA-20 GARGOYLE") because the variations have important distinctions in capabilities.
