How good is Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone? (Season Review)

Ойын-сауық

So when it was announced that Jordan Peele would come out with a new twilight zone and I was iffy. On the one hand Jordan Peele is behind great projects like Key and Peele and Get Out. On the other hand I feel like no matter who it is, no one is truly prepared to remake twilight zone. It’s impossible to please 100% of twilight zone fans. We’re all over the place. So while this show would be impossible to please, I do want to talk about some things that the show did well and can work on for Season 2.

@@amiraameera8302 I get your argument. But Jordan Peele in general has these stories framed around social issues. And I feel it is definitely trying to push the narrative, more than provide an interesting story. I gave it another chance and found some stories in the second season that were a lot better. I still haven't finished season 2 though. I liked "Meet in the Middle" episode one season 2, and "Among the Untrodden" Not every Twilight Zone had a twist or surprise at the end, but season 1, you could see the plotline coming a mile away. In the end, it is always hard to compete with the classics.

@BlackMamba00 You'd have to watch it. But the one that was so obvious was episode 7, season 1. Not all men. Spoiler alert. A meteor strikes near a small town. The men become super violent. They originally find that the men were possibly contaminated because the meteor was in the water supply. The twist is the end is the meteor was just a placebo. It turns out the men were just acting violent.

I think with the social justice patterns your point was perfect. The old twilight zone told a story first, then the message came with it in nuance or along with the twist. In the new season the message seems to come first, so you cant be surprised or really affected by the end. I've always thought of how to word my displeasure with this show but you nailed it right on the head.

So glad I found your review. I just watched 4 episodes of season 1 and everything you've said rings true. I think the stories are trying too hard to be weird and in doing so kill themselves. It's like when a person has a sure date and all they need to do is ask but then they try way to hard to impress the other person and in doing so scares them off and loses the date.

Difference between the classic and Peele's is that the original dealt with our personal and psychological issues in society. It actually had nothing to mainstream politics. None of the episodes in the were original were based on race or foreign politics. Peele's version focused to much on external issues(politics) instead of internal issues (psyche). Twilight Zone is known for its focus psychological issues which Peele's version lacked.

Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone captured exactly the same feels as the original. what I chose to do was ignore the hate of other people for every message. There's a huge difference between subtle, nuanced storytelling that gives the audience a point to consider -{like Black Mirror, which basically IS all the Twilight Zone needed for the 2020s}- and the kind of ham-fisted didacticism that immediately indicates a painfully young, obnoxiously self-righteous writer. The sort of dogmatist who believes that everyone who sees the world differently from them must have their minds beaten into the proper shape, with properly painful propaganda. Before Oz, the Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under & the rest of the amazing HBO series that heralded the golden age of TV & Streaming Drama Series, we had to suffer propaganda of a more patriotic, conservative sort. Until NYPD Blue & The X-Files, debuting in the late-80's & early-90's, police procedurals & mystery programs were straight-up Copaganda, or 45-minute ads for the Military, the FBI, & the CIA. These organizations had long-standing ties to the Hollywood Studios, with liaison officers whose duty it was to decide which projects would receive agency cooperation, and which would not... sometimes based on producer & director reactions to 'suggested' revisions & major rewrites. Working with police departments required less oversight, but cooperation could easily dry up if it was felt that the police characters were being criticized or mocked, or that the city itself was being made to look bad. That explains why TV writers with personal politics that were borderline radical ended up creating bland, conformist trash.

Great analysis! My expectations of this show were super high because of my love for Peele and the original series. I even watched the 2002 version when i was a kid, which was pretty decent for what it was. The first season definitely felt like it could have taken more risks that weren’t so political or obvious in nature. Point of Origin was too heavy handed without being entertaining enough, while Wonderkin worked because it was insane enough and heavy handed enough that it worked. The finale was thrilling, scary, and compelling. I enjoyed Blue Scorpion a lot too, despite the ending. I wasn’t disappointed overall though. This season is making up for it ten fold anyways.

in the episode "The blue scorpion" you harp on the ending because.... Kids get the gun and that's... too easy? I assume that's your issue, you don't explain. But this ending makes sense. Jordan Peele's closing monologue is all about how tragedy is a commodity. A man obsessed with this gun plans to kill his ex wife and instead kills a man trying to buy the gun. the innocent mans death is quickly turned into a positive event for the main character. He gets promoted, he is a community hero, and he knows what it feels like to kill. With his wants and desires paid off he gets rid of the gun a happy man. The price of his happiness comes in the form of a dead kid. He doesn't deserve his reward of a new office and local praise, he killed an innocent man. But the world we live in has flaws, and the main character benefits from these flaws. The universes punishment onto a world that idolizes a man obsessed with killing is the accidental death of a child. This ending is gross, shocking, and in line with the message peele conveys.

In truth, all of the episodes had a social message with the exception of Blurryman, which had a message exclusive to the production of the new series. Some of the ones you missed: The Comedian is straightforwardly about creatives mistreating the people they know for the sake of their work. A Traveler is about colonization. The aliens invading parallel Americans assimilating Inuit culture. Six Degrees of Freedom is about the urgency humanity should feel to prevent nuclear war, global warming, and general destruction. We were so close to missing the mark of salvation from the aliens, it’s frightening. And The Blue Scorpion is, generally, about human attachment to inanimate objects. This does admittedly invoke concerns about inappropriate gun culture.

It was neither as bad as those who panned it because of the politics, nor as great as some who praised it because of the same politics would have us believe. Each episode succeeded or failed on the strength of its writing, which varied because there were different writers. For season two, I'd like to see them mix it up a little bit like the original -- it doesn't have to be totally political all the time but nor should they shy away from saying what they want to say, just as long as the points they are trying to make are earned through the story, and not merely told to the audience or just kind of shoehorned in there. The original had a lot of shows that were thematically about the human condition, existential issues that anyone could find common ground with regardless of where one happens to lie along the political spectrum. And also like the original they should just pick a single fantastical element and carry it realistically through to its logical conclusion. That means no televionsiony twist after twist after twist just because they wanna throw as many cool ideas at as they can and hope that some of them stick.

I agree. I think the big problem with overly "woke" media isn't the message necessarily, but instead the uninspired way of going about it. The original twilight zone tackled lots of political/social issues without overtly beating you over the head with the message. The biggest issue for me is that it seems like the message is more important than the story a lot of times and that ruins it usually.

Yeah that's what I have been hearing which sucks. Honestly I felt like Jordan Peele really only had the one horror movie in him and not going to lie I didn't think Get Out was all that great. I mean it wasn't bad, but just not great and then he's just kind of costing on race baiting for everything else. I Kinda feel from the sound from this review that he kinda dose that here. Again Not that we don't need to examine these issues and what not, but that was kinda what was great about the Original show. They did talk about these things ad they did it in clever ways that wasn't so on the nose and I don't think Peele can do stories that aren't really on the nose. Then again I could just be a hack, who knows.

He's a very fair critic. Positives AND negatives to speak of. Every other review I've seen of this revival series is on an extreme end, and speaking as someone who absolutely does not like the new episodes, I appreciate it a lot more when someone goes in depth enough to say that, "hey, it's not necessarily the actors' fault all the time", or, "the endings could've been tweaked to streamline things".

in "the comedian" when he erases the hecklers its the first hint that the comedy club is more of a machine for feeding souls to tracey morgan. This scene is here to show that he doesn't need to be funny, he doesn't need to know the people, he can just erase at will. It totally ramps up the stakes. this make the scene later where hes just screaming names into the crowd make sense.

the nephew dissapearing early is paid off at its full effect later. You make the claim that since his nephew disappeared earlier the next people that disappear need to have higher stakes, well they do. when he erases the drunk driving comedian he finds that he can use this power for good. He then tries to use it for good but slowly begins to use it for personal gain. Only later when his nephews voice rings in his ear does he realize he should not be taking any person (innocent or not) out of the world. Then he erases him self. Its not about stakes or fear, its an exploration of character. Can you have god like power and still act righteous. No. The comedian completely forgot about his psuedo son as he was obsessed with his own power.

Too preachy, too "white man bad" to be any good. The original series didn't harp on preachy messages, it was more subtle, but subtlety seems to be lost nowadays, perhaps because writers now feel a need to beat you over the head with their views. Or maybe they're just incompetent. Instead of calling this the Twilight Zone, Jordan Peele should just have come up with a new name, or perhaps he was banking on name recognition. Still, it doesn't hold a candle to the original, or even to the 80's version. Look up "Profile in Silver"

That's not up to Peele. It's CBS/Viacom that decided to use the Twilight Zone name. This appears to be a problem in Hollywood beyond just Twilight Zone. They use the name of an established IP simply for name recognition and as a cash grab. I'm sure Peele would rather prefer creating his own anthology series which would have undoubtedly been inspired by Rod Serling's Twilight Zone.

4:28 Yes, the original Twilight Zone took on a lot of things but the episodes were more like life lessons or parables than straight up political. When people call Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone "woke" or SJW they mean that the political messages in the episodes are obviously biased towards left wing ideas and beliefs. Because yes, white cops are racist and out to get the innocent black folk, Males are just plain evil, and mass immigration is good are all modern day left wing beliefs, no matter how you slice it. These episodes aren't meant to teach, they are meant to validate the other people who already believe that these things are true. Serling's episodes had timeless lessons and they wouldn't alienate half of the country. Jordan Peele said he wanted to finish Rod Serling's mission but he failed miserably. Like seriously your not gonna tell me that Rod Serling, a god fearing man from the 1960s who actually fought in a war would believe in a term like "toxic masculinity"Lmfao, gtfoh what a load of bs.

I watched some of the old Twilight Zone episodes before, I vaguely remember most of them and it wasn't THIS political at all. This looks like 80% SJW preaching and 20% 'Twilight Zone', maybe. To me, this marks another great show ruined by agenda being shoved into it. Let's not pretend that this didn't happen. And I can see you're trying to paint it in a different light, but no matter what you say - if it looks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck - maybe it's a fookin duck.

The thing with the original Twilight Zone is it had themes that everyone regardless of race or gender or political position can identify with. It had some controversial issues in it like space travel, war, and nazis, but those stances weren’t preached. Sometimes they weren’t even obvious. Perhaps it was because each episode was based on a short story by different authors so there were all sorts of point of views. There was never any political bias coming from Serling. Never any one overarching political theme. I think they Twilight Zone focused on getting the audience to think about what scares them, they’re own fears, and paranoia. I don’t get the same impression from the revival. It doesn’t force you to think, it forces you to just accept. And a lot of the information or themes that they are trying to present can just subjectively be incorrect depending on the viewer. Not everyone can foster the same beliefs. Also it’s just lazy writing to result to political buzzwords and cliches.

Well I can't wait for the new season. Let's face it, you're never gonna top da man, Rod Serling, but Peele does a great job narrating as well as writing episodes. The chosen cast is strong also. What makes the original show great is the era that it was from, and being in black and white also helped, in my opinion anyway. I always say that you can't replace the original, but a good likeness is always acceptable. You had Ali, then Tyson. Montana then Brady. Jordan then James. Bottom line, the Peele's TZ is better than ones from the 80s. That should be good enough

I appreciate your take, but I can't agree. To me the message of each episode is clear, but that's not a draw back. I think the clear messages, the long run times, and the reliance on real world issues all serve to heighten the fear. for example, replay is a scary episode. It's scary because the cop feels like a shark, hunting the mom and the son. But the true fear from the story comes when you try to separate your understanding of the real world with the rules of the twilight zone. The scariest realization was that if that mom and son weren't "in the twilight zone" and they didn't have a magical time traveling camera they would have no chance at running from this real world threat (a racist cop). This happens in many episodes. If the women from the immigration episode wasn't from a different dimension it wouldn't be a noteworthy story, the kind Hispanic maid would have just been deported and mistreated. In the "it's just the men" episode, if it weren't for the military coming in the stop an alien threat, it would have just been a rape, and a rapist that would likely get away with it. This is true terror. The clear message, the time taken to stir on each scene, and the real world source of terror elevate each episode to speak to the audience on an uneasy level that doesn't allow then to separate fiction from reality.
