    In "stand ground" and "box formation" with a good range of melee units supplemented with skirms and hand cannoneers all protecting the monks (and with Bohemian Hussite Wagons shielding all units, it's even better!) monks can really increase their battlefield survivability. Mangonels and scorpions are obvious counters to such static formations so I always use light cavalry on the flanks and include a few bombard cannon in the square itself (again, protected by the other units) to counter them when my square formation of pike and shot (and monks :D) are within range. Safe for the Hussite wagon this applies to Byzantines as well. It doesn't always work out (depending on the other player's tactics) but when it does it's pretty damn cool :D.

    Who will win: byzantines with monks or french paladins? I bet my money on byzantines. Byzantine player will try to convert while catas act as wall of meat. French player must accepting losing few paladins to conversitons. Byzantine monk bonus will active adter converting: enemy paladins have to kill monks even after conversion. This will give byantine catas more time to freely atack paladins. If french paladins wont kill monks after conversion, they will lose anyways.

    There is two other factors that should be noted, the impact of the inevitable conversion the monk would do in the fight & the impact of the opponent diverting a portion of their army to a suicide charge against the monks resulting in a lot of extra hits taken for the value of the monk. The healing factor doesn't exist in a bubble here, it exists alongside these utilities.

    Hey SOTL, Can you do a video on the difference on how effective faster resource collection is for making military, compared to cheaper military units. With the pros and cons for both aspects.

  • @voidgods

    @voidgods

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'm not SOTL but my 2 cents, faster resource collection is a more reliable bonus in most scenarios, because it applies to all points in the game, and to all scenarios - winning, losing, booming, rushing, etc Cheaper military won't help if you need to boom or need to make a different type of unit to counter your enemy. Faster resource collection does mean you have more than your opponent, and then can adapt around on how to use these extra resources. Which leads to another point - cheaper military is a bonus that requires commitment - you need to spend it for it to even apply, and can backfire if you overinvest. Faster collection on the other hand, let's you choose how you are going to use the extra res. Adaptability and flexibility are generally better overall as a bonus. The only scenarios I can see cheaper military being better is in early aggression where military numbers are small and microed a lot, and economy is too weak for a 5%-10% faster rate to add up too much. Then the player with cheaper military can have more units out and snowball from there. Or in the super late game, where the discount may have saved a lot of resources allowing for a later transition to trash.

    @@flakstruk-8481 If all 4 conversions succeed then yes. But then again the monks can be (and will be) targeted first to prevent conversion and healing mid-fight. Also monks are very slow and can't keep up with Cataphracts. You have to be on the defense to use them in combat like this.

  • @CG-eh6oe

    @CG-eh6oe

    2 жыл бұрын

    Easy question - if you use all res for units, there is no difference between cheaper units and more res (as long as the values are comparable, and no gold is involved). Since you usually only use a fraction of your overall res to create units, ressource collection wins out over discount of similar size. Thats also why unit discounts need to be disproportianlly large compared to eco bonuses.

  • @williamangga6164

    One unit composition I would like to point out that work well with Byzantines is Skirmishers/Monks combo. This can counter almost everything. It is mandatory to go for Skirmishers in feudal age as they are cheap and easy to mass. Just make sure to keep them alive and advance to castle age. From there go monks and see what the opponent throw at you (this is important, keep scouting!). If cav archers, research ballistics. If knights, make more monks and shield them with previous Skirmishers. If siege units like mangonels are coming, prioritize redemption tech at monastery and other monk upgrade (work well against Bohemian's Hussite Wagons). If possible, get Block Printing later on. These moves forces the enemy into two last options, scouts and foot infantry. Cheap pikemen (or camel raider if you fancy and have gold left) should do the job against light cavalry. By that point, they're wasting resources and can only go infantry. And by this point you have enough units or going imperial age to get handcannoners or boom a bit to get Elite Cataphracts. The rest is gg. I really like the Byz versatility. And their monks who can do general work as either moving built-in herbal medicine hospital or Knight's bane to scare them away. Group them at base to replenish troops or heal in front combat. Really embracing the jack of all trades. Remember Byz have all but one monastery upgrades. Your gold can be spended after the trash units. TheViper did these multiple times as Byz. Now with SoTL data on the update, things are getting better.

    I'd like to see a few more tests in this category. Starting the fight with 4 conversions and then healing, and another test where you micro the healers to try and maximize their tactical effect, say by focusing healing on a unit taking a lot of damage. Also, how would you, Mr Law, make a "knight hospitaliar" unit. Some unique unit that is more combat oriented and durable, but can also heal. What similar combat medic unit could other faction groups get? I ask this as a former combat medic, who always loves healing units in games

    Monks can provide so much value thanks to the healing outside of battle that it might be OP. Especially as their conversion risk makes the enemy make sub optimal moves. They are very, very good, if used correctly.

    But what about healing in buildings? No word about its viability here, although I'm sure it's easy to get the answer from watching the previous video. That 80 villagers temporarily added to your eco is a powerful argument. Goes to show how important healing is, even though hardly anyone is doing it! (Of course also goes for healing in buildings.)

    units with high armor low hp should be more effective with mid combat monks... example Teutonic Knights fighting vs other melee units or, Huskarls fighting vs ranged units. less hp is being lost thus allowing for monks to be more effective. My favorite matchup is monks and Teutonic Knights vs Throwing Axemen. (they do 1 damage vs Teutonic Knights)

    In that fight with 4 blue monks and cyan knights vs same cost red knights, it's always better to just convert the red knights right? The monk healing seems to just be a bonus for after you convert and win that fight not the way to win that fight.

Can you test how many Halbs you need to kill different elephants if they’re being healed by Byzantine monks?

    I just ran the math on the knight healing with monks thing and I calculated to only half of your rates.... So could you please explain your math(but remember both the healing rate as well as the gathering rates are for a pretty much optimal case, where only one monk heals one knight at a time (if multiple monks heal the same knight, the additional healing rate for each monk is halved) and where the traveling distances for the villagers are almost minimal): Knight cost: 60 food 75 gold; 100hp (with bloodlines 120) 1hp healing = 0.6food + 0.75gold (bloodlines: 0.5 food + 0.625 gold) One monk healing knight : 300 hp/min => 180 food + 225 gold per minute (bloodlines: 150 food + 186 gold) Villager gathering rates: Gold: 34 gold/min Gold mining: 39 gold/min Gold shaft mining: 44.5 gold/min Food: max 33 food/min Wheelbarrow: ~36 food/min Handcart: ~39 food/min => no feudal age upgrades: One monk healing worth 5.4 vill on food + 6.6 vills on gold (bloodlines: 4.6 on food + 5.6 on gold) => feudal age upgrades: One monk healing worth 25 vill on food + 5.8 vills on gold (bloodlines: 4 on food + 4.8 on gold) => castle age upgrades: One monk healing worth 4.6 vill on food + 5 vills on gold (bloodlines: 3.8 on food and 4.2 on gold)

    Use monks to heal and convert and focus on healing the lowest health units. This way not only are you preserving your units your also stealing the enemies units. Also don't attack units that you want to convert. Use monks as decoys focus on healing a monk that's being attacked while that monk converts the attacker. Add villagers to make an unstoppable forward base and when the enemy doesn't have any units left convert their buildings and villagers build a town center where their's used to be and still their farms as well. Also a vital part of this strategy is to go into chat and type "Hippity hoppity you're town is my property.

    No one should be foolish enough to engage ETKs with melee units only. And if you do: ELEPHANTOS! :D But honestly: at any decent level of gameplay people have diverse armies. If you go all-in on TKs backed with monks, a fast army with ranged units counters it easily. Cav archers, arbs, or even just some scorpions.
