How Gibraltar Became British

Gibraltar is a tiny British territory at the southern edge of Spain. They run themselves like an independent country, and yet they enthusiastically wish to remain with Britain... but also in the EU. How did this all happen?!

Another fun fact is that some of the locals there speak an interesting vernacular called Llanito (pronounced roughly "Yaneeto"), which is essentially Andalucian Spanish with a lot of English loanwords and code-switching. There's also lots of other quirks to it, like old loanwords from Spanish speaking population in Liguria in Italy and Haketia (Morrocan Judeo-Spanish) loanwords from the notable Jewish community there.

I've lived in Gibraltar all my life, so I'm very surprised to see this one! It was very well written. I disagree about the note that the "border checks at the end 2020 aren't any stronger". They have certainly become stronger for tourists or non nationals. Day trips from one to another aren't legal anymore, requiring tourists to show evidence of a hotel in Spain if leaving Gibraltar. This rule is subject to how the guards are feeling that day, as they tend to wave anyone through. Natives with a red identity cards are exempt.

Spain is pressuring the local government of Gibraltar through its population. Shameful. But then again, among other things Gibraltar wasn't even allowed to have their own phone number prefix/independence because of a Spanish boycott up until 2008 which is just ridiculous. Gibraltar is part of the UK and should never become part of the Schengen Area and the border should allow Gibraltarians and cross-border workers to cross it easily with an ID card check.

In late summer and early Autumn of 1991 I worked in Gibraltar for four weeks. I just loved it there it was most amazing experience I had as eighteen year old. I went to this pub that was located in the Marina district. The barmaids started to climb on the bar and sing "I will survive" I was amazed. I was a Smoker at that point in time. There were cigarette pack for a pound in the vending machines. I felt like being in U.K but in a strange way but lovely and sunny. When they have rain OMG I never seen rain like just hit the ground with such force 😱. I loved my time there at The Caleta Hotel Gibraltar. There was this amazing restaurant loved it at the Caleta Bay. I remember I asked what helicopter and speed boat doing following this other boat was it drugs smuggling. The waiter smiled and laughs he said not drugs as such I said what in amazement he there smuggling Tobacco. Wow I thought. Yes I loved my time there the people were so lovely and kind. I never forget my four weeks there. In a way I would love to live there still a person can dream.

@@ferranzurita6297 Arguably a fair amount of people from the British isles have settled there, but Gibraltar is also populated by people from all over the Mediterranean as well as former UK colonies. This population includes those of Spanish decent. Spanish republicans fleeing from fascism settled there for example. Many people also have family on the other side of the border in Spain. From my time visiting there, I get the impression Gibraltarians have a really unique identity that transcends notions of Britishness, Spanish identity and European and global identities.

Excellent video and you ARE actually there! I'm British and accept that the people in Gibraltar want to continue as they are and they've already had several referenda democratically for fuck sake! The Gibralteans love having Spanish people over to work in higher-wage jobs and need them there. Indeed UK has one of the largest diasporas of Spanish already here in the UK for that very purpose. However, Spain seems to be using this as a tool in Brexit negotiations but the UK won't be pushed around. Yet the UK has it's own tool. If Scotland leaves the UK, then it forces a split within every country of the EU, most of all Spain who'll likely lose Catalonia first.
