I am in the crisis stage. I had German in school when I was young. Now I am 55 and am trying to get back to German and be more sereous about it. I do have some grammar I learned long ago. But I feel there is so much I don’t know. I have been playing Duolingo since October. But now I need someone to talk with. I have never been a wiz at grammar so I feel like it is so difficult to know what to do. My husband and I were in Germany the past two summers and I will go again this comming summer. Thank you so much for the incouragement.

You are in very good company in the crisis stage! You can do this, and a trip is very good motivation. :) Very few people are grammar pros, but Laura has simplified the process and created resources so you don't have to be! Thank goodness for this video! I am in stage #2-crisis mode 🤨lol! However, I am definitely ready to commit and keep on going thanks to this video. I watched it a couple months ago and became so involved in the lessons that I completely forgot about this learning curve. Revisiting this video was very helpful and provided me a sense of relief. I went back to basic drills and incorporating reading/listening to German and it has helped me reconnect. Thank you Laura!🤗

Honestly, taking your German Foundations course makes me feel like I'm bypassing the crisis stage. I really struggled with other languages in the past, but by going methodically from the ground up, it does feel more like that linear progression. Very slow but very steady and reinforcing throughout with my own Quizlet setup. No mad dashes down hallways that turn into mazes, just a steady guided exploration one room at a time. I seriously recommend this course to save the headache!

I've started to learn German after my husband (who has been learning it for a few years now) with Laura's German Foundations 1 and 2 (I started this summer and had 0 knowledge about German before) and today was the day when I explained my husband some German grammar concepts that he is still struggling with after such a long time! I'm learning new concepts, then slowing down a bit till they are set up in my head focusing more on repetitions, and then moving forward again. Learning German this way is very fun for me and I find it much less stressful compared to my past language-learning experience :) Thank you very much for making the grammar fan (a task close to impossible)!

As a Spanish speaker, i might say that in the double down stage in English, that's why I will use this video for my improvement in German. This the way I found for learning both languages.

You will HAVE to be dedicated, but yes. You will also need to take in other sources to supplement of course, no offense Laura, even though she covers some really great stuff. I can honestly say that my German has improved with here help. I'm still learning and am far from fluent, but I'm certain that my skills are improving and Laura has claim to that achievement. I found that finding kids shows and cartoons in German are very helpful in understanding and context building. Just like you learn your own native language. In particular, bible story cartoons helped a great deal for me. Then there is music (not just Rammstein), sports, news, and w/e else you can think of with subtitles to help build reading skills, but as Laura mentioned singing along helps to build speaking skills. Build some vocabulary then practice listening and discerning individual words. KZread has everything you can need aside from being interactive, but there's resources for that too on how to find a Meetup-like groups for German speaking or local German clubs, etc. Good luck!

Really great suggestions, @jlaf8000. My courses have the narrow focus of grammar, so supplementing is encouraged and necessary if fluency is your goal! Between my channel and online course, German Foundations 1, you will get grammar basics that will benefit the rest of your learning. I would love to have you as a student!

That curve is like how I describe what working in my field is like to new employees....lol

So if we do not have access to native people to help us in those particular stages we have no other choices for success? Thanks

Hey Karl, I think there is a little bit of a misunderstanding. What I was trying to say is it is helpful to speak with people who speak your native language who have already learned German. For anyone whose native language is English, my courses will provide the help you need. I know you are already a student in German Foundations! You are already doing exactly what you should be doing. Keep up the great work.

Hey Karl, I'm so sorry. I was just thinking about the earlier stage. I think I understand more of what you are saying now. Similarly to how I can be the resource for native English speakers, there are many companies that can match you up with a native German speaker to be the helper through your double down stage. While I didn't personally work with any of these (so I can't vouch 100% for them) I know that some options are Tandem, italki, FluentU, and more. And if you are in a place where you can't afford to take that step, I can understand it being more frustrating. I absolutely think that you can continue learning and doing really well in your journey. It's just an ideal world would include a native speaker as well. I hope that is more helpful, and sorry again that I wasn't fully understanding your comment initially.

It can indeed be of great help deepening your level of german understanding, listening and talking to natives with different accents and getting used to the melody of the language. However you can still make great progress by committing to yourself - to your german learning success! If you were watching this great video, you‘re on the right way! Keep up the good work :)

Spend time, a lot of time, doing writing exercises if you haven't already. Write about topics that interest you, your family, your day, anything!

My frustration comes from my memory. It's there and I know I have the ability and get further if my damned memory would cooperate. I looked around and in a city with many language options, German is not one of them. The closet option I have is a 200$ online course from California. I don't have the money for that to get to the B level. Bf is not a big help as he has a French influence to his accent so it's hard to understand his German.

Repetition is your friend! Learning languages is always going to be an investment - of time for sure, but sometimes money if you can't to where you want to be on your own. German is complicated enough that finding a class eventually might save you a lot of frustration and discouragement. Something worth saving up for! Speaking should be the very last step, and if you are struggling with it, it might be a good idea to circle back to the other aspects of learning the language first. Why would anyone waste time learning German which is not only difficult but is spoken in just 3-4 countries? Better to learn Spanish which is more widespread and is much easier.

Like @flonations1323 was saying, there are many reasons to learn German. Especially if you are in Germany or hoping to live in Germany someday, learning the native language is respectful. It also is a heritage journey for many. If you prefer Spanish, that's great, too!
