Gargoyles peer down at us from buildings, pop up on our TV screens, and exist within the fantasy worlds of role-playing games but do you know where they originated from?
Before these stoney grotesques became monsters they were just water spouts. We still adorn our buildings with the carvings and sculptures of the frightening, funny, and exaggerated forms-but why? Learn all about the strange history of the gargoyle monster and how the power of imagination turned some odd looking architecture into a legendary creature. #gargoyles #Gothic #MonstrumPBS
Written and Hosted by: Dr. Emily Zarka
Director: David Schulte
Executive Producer: Amanda Fox
Producer: Stephanie Noone
Illustrator: Samuel Allen
Editor: Sara Roma
Produced by Spotzen for PBS Digital Studios.
The world is full of monsters, myths, and legends and Monstrum isn’t afraid to take a closer look. The show, hosted by Emily Zarka, Ph.D., takes us on a journey to discover a new monster in each new episode. Monstrum looks at humans' unique drive to create and shape monster mythology through oral storytelling, literature, and film and digs deep into the history of those mythologies.

One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are Gargoyles!

It'd be interesting if Vader was a gargoyle (as in, water flowing through and out his mouth), and perhaps a difficult design quandary: since his mouthpiece is shaped like grating, how do you carve so many narrow slits out of stone? Heck, I don't even know how they hollow out *regular* gargoyles.

eertikrux May I present to you the Monstrum poem. Ahem! The pumpkins glow a yellow orange blaze, the full moon rises upon the night skies. Hands begin to pop out of the graves, coming out are a horde of undead guys. Meanwhile in a church from Pennsylvania, its creature-like water spouts begin to crumble. Fangs are exposed like your typical vampires, the monster wakes with a sound of rumble. In a land of supernatural creatures called Yokai, one of these monsters comes out its cave. A beauty on the outside but a horror on the inside, it’s got young samurai flesh to crave. Up in the mountains of the Himalayas, a familiar face wanders around. It’s like Bigfoot but covered in snow, and extremely hard to be found. What are these monsters doing here you’d ask? Well to put it simply, it’s the month of Halloween! And they’re all here to celebrate a time so spooky and fun, now you understand what I mean! Now join us as we explain all these monsters, from unknowns of the sea to nasty fox tricksters. And if you’re too scared to come along, Emily Zarka will say to you this line: “Don’t worry, they’re just..........monsters.“

Terry Pratchett's Discworld features what has to by my favourite (and possibly best thought out) depiction of gargoyles; as a sub-species of troll that's adapted to an urban environment, colonising the rooftops of crumbling stone edifices, subsisting on mineral rich rainwater strained through their ears and out their mouths, along with any inattentive pigeons, and deriving mild entertainment from the hustle and bustle of the city below.

“They see us, but we don’t see them.” There was a movie (in the 1980s I believe) and I cannot remember if it was Tales From the Dark Side or Outer Limits, but there was a gargoyle story as on of the segments in it. A female gargoyle falls in love with a human man, they get married and have two kids. All is well until he finds out exactly what his wife and kids are... It has been years since I’ve seen it, so I can’t say for sure how it ended. At any rate, this movie is what gave me my love for the gargoyles and the grotesques!

@@edisonlima4647 I don't understand the intent of your post. Do you feel defensive towards the segment because you like it or is it that you genuinely don't know? I feel like the attempt to boil things down to the vaguest possible themes is very deliberate. "a vow" for instance, instead of specifically "a vow to silence" or "tragedy ensues" as opposed to specifically "the lover is revealed to be a deadly monster". But giving you the benefit of the doubt here I can tell you that it's basically the whole thing and a lot of specifics. From meeting the creature first in it's monstrous form as opposed to first encountering it in disguise, to the aforementioned vow being one of silence, to the outcome of the broken vow. Shadowhawk28 The specific version is _supposedly_ the one in Lafcadio Hearn's Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, titled simply "Yuki-onna".

As a person who grew up with the 1990's Gargoyles TV Show, it's fun to see how previous iterations influenced the lore of the show. Examples: Reynard being the main character of the novel --> In the show Halcyon Reynard being one of the characters that faces off against, and later becomes an ally with, the Gargoyles. And with Reynard meaning "Fox", his daughter going by the name of Fox. Additionally, it seems that the show from the 1970's influenced the fact that Gargoyles traditionally live in caves and that their children hatch from eggs.

Two more depictions of gargoyles that werent in the video: There is a town hall in Northern Germany somewhere that has figures of officials of a rival town (i think) in less then charming positions :D The Gargoyles on Terry Pratchetts Discworld cant close their mouths, and thus cant make any sounds that require them to do so. Makes for a very interesting language (espacially if you try to read it as a non native speaker :D)

Thus descends down the from the rooftop, a creature carved from stone. Thought to be but a statue, but given life by some dark elemental magics. The creature stares onwards with glaring red eyes that only shine when it views its prey. Itself an ironic existence, a being of stone that flies cannot be logical, yet it not only exists, it also terrifies. Swiftly into the night sky, the prey is whisked away. The person is unable to let out an audible cry as the Gargoyle flies off into the night amongst the cityscape, the rain masking its departure. The next morning a chimney sweep will find the discarded remains amongst the smokestacks of the cathedral and think none the wiser as the monstrosity stalks again the next evening.

Isn't there disagreement on their origins? In one of the early Vimes/Watch books they're discribed as a subspecies of troll/urban trolls, which have evolved to survive on the nutrients strained out of the rain water that runs through them (like whales/basking sharks, I always think) with a side helping of pigeon whenever they get the chance. I don't recall the magic stuff being a confirmed alternative. But I always welcome any excuse to revisit the Disc! 😁

surely there must have been some link before Dr. Who's "the daemons" since they recognized the idea of the gargoyle coming to life. Since it was recognized as part of the trappings of the very occult oriented adventure. It would seem like maybe something from Hammer films.

The 1972 movie, "Gargoyles," is a classic of the 70's. I bought the DVD a few years ago and my grandkids love it as much as I did as a kid. I enjoyed the 90's animated series as well. The mythology has links to the biblical serpent in the garden of eden and the fallen angels, as well as being mirrored in the alien lore of reptilians.

Well, that's the nature of tours. They're as much about creating a narrative for the location as teaching fact. It's a walk-through docudrama. In the case of a gray area like that I think it's acceptable for the tour's script to pick a side on the debate. The most basic provable fact is that gargoyles are fancy rainspouts and there probably was no single explanation for their form at the time. Someone made them scary one day and everyone else followed with varying reasons.
