    My lighting was perfectly fine during the episode. I think a lot of people just don't have the TV color settings set properly. e.g. they have shitty "sports mode" and "vivid" on.

  • @VinnieBoucher_II

    @VinnieBoucher_II

    I had to pause it after the first couple min and go into the settings and personalize it so I could see better. First thing I did was check the viewing modes and none of them made a drastic difference and that's when I went and personalized it. It was better after that but still wasn't as good as I would have preferred. I have a large TV that's less than a year old and is known for having really good picture quality. So for me it wasn't about not having a good enough TV. I can only imagine what it was like for some people.

    A simple detail in the death of the night king scene that would give more of a story background to the character would be that, instead of the NK shattering to pieces, he would turn to his human form, say “thank you” to arya, then die. He gives her thanks for finally breaking the curse he had been under for thousands of years, after all, he was turned against his will by the children of the forest.

    That was much more egregious than the Nights King being done away with in one stab. Dany also dracarys’d him in the face full blast and he stepped out of the flames like he’d just gotten a shower. A drawn out fight with the NK would probably have played far more poorly I mean, who would really want to see a sword fight between Jon and the NK while all his friends and family are getting slaughtered? Will the other WWs just watch? I don’t think that would have visually been that exciting. Night’s King got a dragon shower, raised all the dead on the battlefield and inside the keep, and walked towards his inevitable destiny with his entourage in tow. He did more than enough to prove his badassery but it had to end at some point. At least it wasn’t Sansa or another non-fighter.

    George R.R. Martin stopped writing the script for GOT after season 6. The Arya Twist ultimately came from David Benioff & D. B. Weiss which is probably the reason why the apocalypse through an overpowering undead army was stopped by a teenager stabbing the night king. Great stuff... it's not surprising that George R.R. Martin has mixed feelings about season 8. He probably had seen enough after season 6 and decided to focus on his books. The epic character of the night king which is the ultimate evil in the GOT universe was build up since the first episode and it is just unbelievable that there is not much more to it than this.

    I know you mentioned Arya's training from The Hound but I want to point out when he taught her to aim for the heart. To me, It looks like she got the NK right under his left arm. Also the another thing I want to bring up. Arya's training while blind allowed her to hit him in the heart without looking. Sounds obvious, but that weak point in his armor was only there because his arm was stretched up and out. Anyone else wouldn't even see it in that situation, but she didn't need her eyes to spot it. I know I'm probably giving the writers too much credit, maybe not, but Arya is a beast either way.

    See, I think Jon is still Azor Ahai, because the prophecy doesn't specify that AA will kill the Night King, only that he or she will bring the dawn. George RR Martin has repeatedly said that prophecies shouldn't be taken literally. Jon gave Arya her first weapon, Needle, which is why Ned allowed her to train in the first place. Needle also became symbolic of her identity while in Braavos when she refused to relinquish it. Jon took back Winterfell, which is why Arya went back. So, a different interpretation could be that Jon is Azor Ahai and Arya is Lightbringer.

    Perfectly articulated. Thanks so much for making this. Admittedly, I bought into a little of the controversy after seeing some of the backlash the episode got online, but now that you've spelled it out, it makes complete sense. Sure, it would have been nice to see more action from the Night King and his band. Maybe it was a little bit of an abrupt ending, but who is to say we won't find out more about the night king and what Bran was actually doing during the battle in the coming episodes? I think the episode was meant to leave some questions unanswered. Overall, I thought the episode was great. Minus some of the battle strategy/blunders at the beginning. Admit that the flames slowly dying out as the Dothraki are overwhelmed was artistic and chilling. Nobody had ever beaten the Dothraki on horseback in open combat, which is why they charged in, as they had always done.

    The links between Arya and cats were always much clearer in the books - she first learned to move like a rogue by catching cats on the Red Keep. In Braavos, she briefly became Cat of the Canals. Then she learned to control her warging abilities by possessing a cat, which allowed her to regain her eyesight. It makes sense that she would use a dagger called Cat's Paw to kill the NK. @No Go She's a faceless man, she has the skill to sneak by anyone and everyone. And because she grew up in Winterfell and knows the grounds so well, that's also a major plus. But the Night King being the old intelligent being he is, he was able to notice her and catch her. She's really the only one who could get close enough to the Night King. Spear being thrown from a random person wouldn't work because he would notice it, he didn't notice what Arya was about to do because he thought she was just dropping the knife from being choked to death. He could obviously defeat a regular 18 year old girl, but a faceless man is a closer fight.

    20 Questions to anyone who thought this was a great episode.... 1. If The Night King knew where Bran was, why didn't he just fly over to him with Vicerion and burn Bran, the Greyjoys and the weir wood tree all where they stood. There wasn't a damn thing anyone could do to stop him. 2. Since when does the CALVARY go first? Why were they not using the Trebuchets and archers first, like every single battle in the history of the world? 3. Why was Ghost with Jorah and the Dothraki? He doesn't know them. Why wasn't he with Sansa Stark in the crypts? 4. Why didn't they use the same strategy on the wight army that they did against the Lannisters by using Dragons to pave a path through and Dothraki penetrating to finish off? 5. What was the point of the Trebuchets and Catapults? 6. Jorah was on the front line of Dothraki, so how exactly did he survive and the 50 lines of Dothraki behind him didn't? 7. Why did they cast World World Z zombies in place of the Wights? If the Wights could move that fast, why didn't they do so as soon as the Wall went down last season? 8. So are we going to ignore 40 thousand Dothraki (special forces) die in 40 secs, but Sam (Librarian) survives over 40 mins in an open courtyard even after being dog piled by same wights? 9. Why was Sam outside fighting anyway? Didn't he promise to never leave Gilly alone again? He easily could have been heroic protecting the ppl in the crypt against the resurrected Starks. 10. Where the hell did Jorah come from to save Dany? Remember he was on the other side of the wights. Dany used Drogon to clear a path for Jon to get through. She didn't do that for Jorah, so how'd he get there? 11: I love Davos, but he said he's no use with a sword... so How did he survive? 12. Why were the wights so slow in the Stark Library scene with Arya? They were running like World War Z zombies previously, so why wouldn't they just run through that Library destroying everything in their Path? Why the delicate movements? 13. As Badass as Lyanna Mormont's death was... why exactly did the wight Giant hold her that close to his eye? Her arms were too short to be able to reach him if he just held her up. Was he near sighted? Even better, do wight's even care? 14. Why did the Night King smile? Since when did he have emotions? Wouldn't he have smiled back in HARDHOME as well? Imagine a SNAKE or Crocodile smiling. Silly isn't it? 15. How was Jon able to survive Vicerion's flame hiding behind a short wall and small pile of rumble? Remember Vicerion just took down half of Winterfell's exterior walls and he was the one that to out THE GREAT WALL. 16. What was the point of the WHITE WALKERS? 17. Why didn't Arya turn into a White Walker when the Night King grabbed her flesh? 18. Where did Arya Leap from? Also why was she screaming on the leap? Wasn't the whole point to surprise attack? 19. Why did Jon Yell at Vicerion? Was he just hoping to die? It really makes no sense. 20. Why does anyone care about the "Next Battle." Seriously, there is no need for any more armies, fleets or even Dragons. They have Arya. She beat the NK without even wearing a face, so how does Cersei stand a chance against Arya with her faces? How hard would it be for Arya to go to King's Landing, get Qyburn's face and then see Ceresi face to face? Game over, no?

A show that made the villain to be the biggest threat to humanity, then had him killed by a teenage girl without explaining anything about him. What was with all of the symbols, what did he want with Bran, etc. To say it's just a show as a justification to the horrible writing this season is as lazy as their writing and a complete cop out .

    Why did everyone want to see a one-on-one battle with them? When has anyone ever seen NK engage in a battle? NEVER. Hell Jon invited him to do it in the battle and he pussed out and raised the dead to avoid it. Jon could have jumped out of the boat at Hardhome and gone after him, but of course that would have been suicidal given his generals and gobs of wights were around. As it would have been in the Godswoods. How on earth does anyone think Jon would just be able to roll up on him in his clanky ass metal and whip out some massive sword and get down to business with him? He'd have to fight all the generals first. And would likely lose. If he won all that, then NK would sic the wights on him. I mean, c'mon! Why can't people see that Arya truly WAS the only one with the skills to do this? That is not diminishing Jon's amazing talent, but he didn't have the right set of skills to sneak in and ambush him, which was the only way he was going to be killed. It works beautifully with the narrative they've been building all these years!

You either have to make him drop his guard, or wait for him to drop his guard. It could have been done better, but Arya killing him was the only option for this particular task. Given that she's the only character who has any amount of stealth. Or have Tormund tackle him and yell "my little icycle!!"

    Season 7, from the page showing the drawing of the VS dagger that Sam lingers on: The Valyrians were familiar with dragonglass long before they came to Westeros. They called it "zīrtys perzys" which translated to “frozen fire” in Valyrian and eastern tales tell of how their dragons would thaw the stone with dragonflame until it became molten and malleable. The Valyrians then used it to build their strange monuments and building without seams and joints of our modern castles. When Aegon the conqueror forged his Seven Kingdoms, he and his descendants would often decorate their blades with dragonglass feeling a kinship with the stone. The royal fashion for dragonglass ornamentation soon spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms to those wealthy enough to afford it. Hilts and pommels were and are the most common decoration for dragonglass if too brittle to make a useful crossguard. Indeed, its very brittleness is what relegate it to the great houses and the most successful merchants.
