What do camera car mounts on professional Hollywood movies look like? That's the question we ask Phedon Papamichael, ASC, the cinematography behind Ford v. Ferrari. We talk about using practical lighting, shadows, and anamorphic lenses.

    Such an incredibly sharp movie. The lighting, the colors, the composition, the action. All just so incredible. But what an amazing Cinematographer! All of his films really stood out to me before I got into filmmaking. Identity is one of my favorite films. Because of him the Four Aces movie ranch is one of my favorite locations that I STILL haven’t shot at! But damn Indy Mogul, you guys are killing it. Look at all these best picture Cinematographer’s! These are Oscar nominated People on the show! This is just crazy.

    This is just great. Really enjoyed listening to Phedon. Loved that he enjoys cars on top of enjoying filmmaking. Being a fan of cars myself and a filmmaker, I also enjoyed this movie and felt it was beautifully shot. So again, it's great you guys sat down with him and broke done some of his techniques. Loved the card board chat of the hanger that made me laugh. Especially when he said if you were there and saw it in person that it would seem like they didn't know what they were doing. Haha ... filmmaking, looks silly in the process but that final look is what really sells it. :)

    That's why hollywood is quite dependent on agents - so that they don't have to sully friendships and working relationships with money disputes. It's just agents arguing with studio people.

  • @dennissilvas882

    @dennissilvas882

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's due to the anamorphic lenses, especially modified ones like this set. All lenses focus breathe (due to optical physics), but the "corrected" ones have a second element stack that zooms a bit to perfectly compensate. If that were added to an anamorphic optic, you'd end up with a lens that changes its squeeze factor when focusing... or a 28-element, 50lb lens, $1M lens.

  • @CaseyMcBeath1

    @CaseyMcBeath1

    4 жыл бұрын

    Gabriel Machado Because those are new lenses. Remember he even states here that he wants something that feels traditional and in the era, so he wanted older vintage style anamorphics. Also the UVs are an oddball 1.65x so they aren’t the full 2x that pro DPs are used to, so the out of focus elements don’t have the same panache.

  • @DaCarnival

    @DaCarnival

    4 жыл бұрын

    The Alexa LF sensor is physically larger than the Red Vista Vision / Panasonic DXL2 sensor which the Ultra Vista lenses were designed for, and the Alexa LF sensor has a taller open gate aspect ratio, so a 1.65 squeeze is almost not enough for a 2.40:1 final aspect ratio.
