It's very subjective. For me football started dying after 2015, and had peak talent in the two decades 1995-2015. I see footballers today and I wonder how did we enter the footballing dark ages. There are barely any talents nowadays that could have survived in the period I mentioned except maybe Mbappe, and Haaland (who would be considered a glorified albeit more effective Inzaghi imo).

@@tratbagd4500 Its because in the golden time both the individual talent and the effectiveness of the team peaked. Nowadays everything gets subordinated under the teams performance and thus the coaches phylosophy. The death of the classical 10 is one of the biggest signs. A good example is my favourite club Stuttgart. With mostly the same lineup we played against relegation last year. But then we got a really competent coach and now we re about to leave both Leipzig and Dortmund behind us in the race for the CL positions. Both teams have much better players on paper. Mediocre players can compete with much better ones cause the biggest factor is the coach today. The best players have far less freedom than they had in the past and so youth players get trained to obey the coaches phylosophies over everthing, leading to much more streamlined players. You dont see extremely unique players like Ronaldinho, Robben or Gattuso for example anymore. Same with whole teams. Mid 00s Milan, Brazil 2002, Sir Alex ManU or the Chelsea with 11 captains, etc. We look at such lineups in marvel cause we wont see anything thats somewhat close today.

Actually, the players who are playing now has more skilled. Because the past days, the theories of football were not well established. The OG players understand “football“ by their instincts, so most of players were playing with so much mistakes. Nowadays, most of players are playing correctly so it is hard to make differences among the players.
