How fit can you get riding an electric bike?

Спорт

So how fit can you get riding an electric bike? In today's video we are going to find out! Jake and I put the Canyon Endurace:ON e-bike against our Canyon road bikes over two different test to see if you can get fit riding an electric bike. The first test is over a rolling course and the second test we will race up our local climb.
Jacob is a professional for Canyon DHB and I'm an amateur cyclist, so as well as the e road bike vs road bike we will be able to see how the results vary between amateur and pro too.

Thanks for the great video! I'm not surprised by the results since that Canyon e-bike only assists up to 25km/hr and I'm guessing with a 250 watt motor. Here in California, our laws let us have e-bikes with assists up to 45km/hr and motor ratings up to 750 watts. With enough battery life I'll almost always be quicker on a California e-bike (except maybe technical descents).

Thanks guys, well done comparison and video. Yes, I was a little surprised. but as Pedal Power mentioned earlier, California allows reasonably much faster assists (up to 28 mph). And also, EU doesn't allow throttle only drive which is a bummer while here in the US, many people with some physical needs want to have the option of using throttle.

I'm not entirely sure e-bikes are aimed at people who avg 26 to 36 kph on a 7 out of 10 effort. Maybe try the test again with people who are returning to the sport, aiming to get fit or recovering from illness. Where e-bikes play their role is helping those who maybe are a little worried about committing to a cycle with a group or on their own without knowing they have the assistance to get up that 10% climb or make it back home in a sensible state. Like many of the comments below, e-bikes have truly made the difference for so many in continuing to cycle when it wouldn't be otherwise possible.

What a pointless test. Unless you are riding below 25kph, you may as well have strapped 10kg lead to your road bike . This isn't what road e-bikes are about. They are certainly not meant for a pro who can average over 36kph. All you were doing at those speeds was carrying extra weight. You also wouldn't be using the same gearing. A 1x and a 2x will also perform differently.

It's been brilliant for me, as I've been able to keep riding, which I love to do. Fascinating to hear the views of a Pro Cyclist as well, saying It's changed his viewpoint on ebikes, as they generally are slagged off my 'proper cyclists'. I feel they certainly have a place as I can now ride with fitter people.

It was an eBike (Orbea Gain) and some motivational videos from the likes of yourself, Juliet Elliott and Dave Noakes etc, that got me back to being able to walk and ride after being discharged from a 9 month stay in hospital, 6 weeks of which were in intensive care, immobilised on a ventilator while muscle atrophy took its toll. If it weren't for eBikes I would likely still be needing medical assistance, as traditional physiotherapy just wasn't working for me.

Assistance over the long route made the e-bike faster because it smoothed out the undulations, in effect it made the route flatter. The hill climb was too short to offset the additional weight, on a longer climb as you become more tired and slower the more the motor will help.

I have done 2000 commuting miles on my e-bike. I have a 40 mile daily round trip and i found doing this on my road bike meant I was exhausted by the end of the week (I am 50+ yrs old). So I now alternate the bikes when the weather is good and just use the e-bike in bad weather - the fatter tyres and full mudguards mean it is great in wet weather. I would recommend an e-bike to everyone, mine is the best bit of kit I have bought. With ride to work schemes being increased to £3000 you can buy it tax free. Go on, buy one you know you want to.

Missing my leftleg and rode bikes since I was sixteen before I lost the leg many years ago. I find the E-Bike I use helps keep me from falling and busting my head open when my prosthetic left leg not feeling exactly where the foot is slips around on pedal issues. I use cleated pedals so foot doesn't slip off on the prosthetic side and my prosthetic team likes the idea I stay active despite loosing my left leg in 2018. I have an Össur carbon fiber and titanium left leg and working on the leg itself is like working on bike parts to me... any way it gives me exercise and I have a regular mountain bike that is pedal power only and careful when using it... more for downhill so I still have momentum to keep balance missing the left leg. Interesting video on staying in shape with an E-Bike... thanks for sharing and wish all who try to do positive things the best...

I found the same too - for fast riding the ebike loses it’s advantage and you end up pedaling a heavy beast. Where an ebike excels is in hybrid commuter guise, where you are not in a rush. Used that way, it’ll go up any hill at a consistent 15mph and is great fun to just ride along casually. Cheers.

Great comparison, thanks. I own the Endurace:On 7, put 40mm Gravel tyres on it and mainly ride in the mountains. Experience in last 12 months has been amazing. Advantages I see: you can gain more elevation, climb faster, and do longer routes in one ride. In addition, it allows me to attach the Thule carrier for our 3Y old and take her with me on some mountain tours. On the calories: I still burn a big amount since I mostly use light assistance, and only switch to heavy assistance on the steep climbs. I can also climb trails and hills which I couldn't before, due to a higher torque that gives my bike more grip on steep dirt surfaces.

Great video, comments are a little confusing though, guess this is a European channel. Decent-good US ebikes can easily push you to 28-30 mph with pedal assist and pedaling hard, against the wind. They provide so much power and there is no competition in speed unlike what some of the comments are saying. You still get just as much of a workout as the video says. I am fit at 160lb and have biked on and off for 20 years and I don't think I can go back to a normal bike - in the Midwest Plains where I live it's uncommon for winds to be less than 15 mph. In headwind it's a whole different ballgame and pushing up the pedal assist so you can maintain speed is fantastic. I also love the ability to throttle at stops - I am a bit of a speed demon during my 3.5 mile work commute and I HATE stopping, so I am now a little bit of a safer rider instead of pushing my boundaries so much, as stopping does not hurt to lose my momentum! The weight is a little bit of a pain though, moving the bike into my apartment is slightly more annoying, but part of that is just because my ebike is a little larger too.

I’ve been a casual cyclist for several years riding mostly carbon road bike and aluminum touring/commuter bikes. I bought a Rad City bike about a year ago and it is super fun to ride but I’ve found it quite heavy thus hard to stay diligent about making myself work, it’s too easy to hit the throttle and zoom up the last bit of hill. I just purchased a Bearclaw Thunderhawk to get back to giving full effort. I did my first ride on the new bike and I quickly realized I was a little out of shape. I’d been relying on the assist too much. That said e-bikes are super fun but for a good workout I personally need to stick to traditional bikes.

I'd be curious to know how much heavier and slower this Canyon e-bike is when you ride with just the empty blank in place, on a flat and on a climb. Biggest difference is how I feel at the end even though calorie burn is similar, I don't feel anywhere near as knackered on the emtb. Your test is short-sighted. The answer is that you can get fit riding an ebike. You have more fun and you get less-encumbered by hills and so you can ride a lot more miles. And you can replace driving miles doing errands with ebike riding miles which equals more fitness. Even if it's less intense per mile, you end up riding way more miles with an ebike. You can always dial down the electric assist as you get more fit if you want more intensity. And most importantly it helps people with strength and mobility issues do SOME exercise vs NO exercise if they couldn't manage with a regular bike. Adherence to exercise is way more important than theoretical potential of exercise. It's ablelist to think that you can only get fit on regular bikes.

I got my first ebike a year ago, having never really done any real cycling (apart from pootling around on a Chopper as a kid). That was a city bike, which led 3 months ago to an electric mountain bike which is miles better, and last week I bought a non-electric gravel bike, mainly to use on the road and the better kept forest paths. I found that I was cycling at around 27kph on the road with the emtb, just above the point where the motor stops, and then its weight was a hindrance (although it's a fantastic bike, a Trek Rail 5). The gravel bike is quicker in those conditions although I struggle with hills at the moment. Ebikes are fantastic if you aren't particularly fit but clearly are not suited to serious cyclists like these two. The answer? Well, I guess there's a reason why there's a wide range of different types of bikes, both with and without electric motors!

I think the results would be very different if you're riding US spec 20mph (or 28mph) instead of your restricted 15mph. Also, I think these really shine over longer distances. 10 miles isn't going to do it. Maybe a 50 mile ride with some hills.

  • @marshallburke1817

I was very surprised at your results. However, it is because I'm in the USA where our top power for ebikes is 750W and 28 MPH vs. 15 MPH in the UK. My new ebike which is a commuter (30 kilos/65 lbs.) goes 34 MPH in "Race" mode. So, there would be no way I could match my ebike on a road bike in the USA. UK needs to loosen up on their ebike limits. It would be great for commuters around the country most especially in London. Good show!

I think 25kph is about right, any faster and I would hardly need to put any effort in at all. With the bike I have there are 3 settings and I use setting 2, which effectively cuts off the motor at around 22kph. This is just about right as on the flats I can just about pedal faster than this, and then on inclines the motor kicks in. I guess it comes down to whether you want the bike just for transport or to keep fit too.

Jacob :P I think for the majority of riding the spread between gears is plenty on the e-bike but the biggest thing if you are used to the road bike gearing is that the difference between each gear is larger. Dunno about you guys but my ebike has given me more of a workout than my pedal Schwinn, the reason being because I’m able to go longer on the ebike, it’s more fun, and I can absolutely feel the burn even on the highest pas and gear because your body is doing the motions, but a lot of the time I’m doing 1 pas and sometimes 0. The answer is: yes the ebike CAN be a great workout but it depends on how you use it. One person could do pas5 and barley put any effort in and a other person could take a different approach. Or a combination of the two, and it’s still exercise so you will lose weight. I have.

Hardly suprising results here, as the participants are young on road bikes, who are averaging speeds in excess of 25kmph. For less fit and older cyclists averaging less than 25kmph, the assistance would be a more helpful, so allowing a longer distance to be covered. In either case the riders will end up using up the same amount of energy.

I guess this test with these guys does not make much sense. The E bike turned out to be more of a burden to them, these guys can push way beyond the 25km/h E bike limit on a hill, after that the bike's weight for them becomes an issue. An average cyclist like me,happy to ride 120km per week between work and family duties now that's when an E bike may be a serious advantage and help in keeping myself fit and cardio wise healthy . They are both young, lean and fit,I'm 47 and although extremely fit I'm still 47 and 84kgs nonetheless, love handles are ready to pop out anytime after a pizza and beer dinner. C'mon, the guy averaged 37km/h...I could never come out with those numbers, not even when I've started cycling 12 years ago.
