I know the premise is to have a ratio of club speed to carry but ball speed is universally tracked more consistently/accurately on monitors. Suggest including it as part of your display as another reference point for people.

Agreed, but there's big variances in ball speed for different people based on strike and face angles. I use club speed because if the distance is below the ratio it will identify those strike, face, equipment, etc. issues.

i had the same thought on the 7 iron video. Trackman and Toptracer ranges don't give you clubhead speed, but do give ball speed and launch. I'd like to know whether i'm getting optimal distance based on ball speed.

Club head speed levels the playing field across all abilities though, ball speed doesn't. I can thin a ball faster than my best strike, where as the club speed would be the same.

i tracked a lot of data this past summer, and found my swing was consistently between 85-90mph with a slightly lower (than average) ball flight, but relatively straight, I found that I carried right between 200-210 pretty reliably. As for hardware, I use a Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 9.5 degree driver. I also tried a ton of different balls, and found that I got the most distance from Callaway Super Softs, or Srixon Soft Feels. Any 3 piece ball that I played was about 15-20 yards shorter off the tee with that 85-90mph swing speed. The performance of the ball you play has a LOT to do matching your swing speed to a certain type of ball.

2.4 x SS is the number that was commonly referenced couple decades ago (when I was into this), and what I saw as realistic in real world playing. However, there have been some improvements in ball and club technology since then and 2.5 is possible at higher SS. But one thing stays the same and that is you have to center-face it and have good launch conditions to get anything close to optimal.

It's also about where the speed is produced. You can have someone with bad tempo swinging faster in the first part of the down swing but then stay the same or lose speed when they actually hit the ball and that swing would look a lot faster. At 71 years of age and 5'2" I am perfectly happy with driving the ball 175 to 200 yards with decent accuracy. Otherwise, I do not care about any of the other particulars...I will just keep playing in the high 70s to the low/mid 80s from the 5500 yards tees and be pleased. My wife and I walk 18 holes 3-5 times a week...great exercise-readies us for the 6-10 mile hikes we undertake while on vacation. For folks who perseverate over everything in this regard-have at it.

I don't understand how you just breathe on the ball and it goes 200. I have to swing pretty hard to get out to 200, and then make good contact to go 240.

I don't understand how the mid-80s swing looks so slow. I have to absolutely swing out of my shoes and even on centred strikes can't carry it beyond 190. Tried all techniques for a year now. Just don't understand how you barely touch it and it says 199 carry.

He’s likely delivering it more efficiently than you. It would be worth it to get your driver swing on a launch monitor if you haven’t already

Went through the same exact thing. For me, the issue was I was not using my legs at all. Was swinging all arms and shoulders. If you have the same issue, just ensure you’re getting your weight shifting back into your right heel, and then shifting to your left outside foot. Once i did that, i barely had to swing and my distances and club speed went way up. And as someone who lifts weights a lot, i was trying to muscle the shot. Let your body and club be a whip.

Do you think you’re releasing the club properly? This has helped me gain speed w/o more effort

@craigrapp9469 Thanks for the suggestion. Been trying all that for a long time now. I think the answer is I'm just weak. Women don't drive it as far as men (on average) so logically there will be men who are just below average of what a man can achieve.

@atxrich hi, yes been on a launch monitor. I've seen a couple of different pros and all they can advise is to "swing faster". But I physically can't swing any faster. Just below average in that department. Unfortunately youtube golf doesn't acknowledge these people exist!
