How Every HULK Was Built (1978 - 2022)

Ойын-сауық

The Hulk made his live action debut in the 1978 Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno series and we've watched him continuously evolve on screen from the Ang Lee version in 2003, his debut in the MCU with The Incredible Hulk, his metamorphosis from Edward Norton to Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers 2012 through Age Of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, Infinity War, Endgame and more recently She-Hulk. This video takes a look at how the technology has adapted over time through a range of interpretations including savage, smart and even that time he was just a man covered in paint. Thanks for watching!

I remember in an article about how bad CGI a lot of times is not the animators fault, they give Ang Lee's _Hulk_ as an example because apparently their original model had more naturalistic colors and integrated better with the live-action enviroments, but Ang Lee insisted on the model being more and more green, making it look more fake in the process

Ang Lee seems like an incredible director for real, on-set stuff. Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger. But when he has to lean heavily on CGI and post prod, he seems to make big swings and thus bigger misses. Hulk, Gemini Man.

I'll have to say the Ed Norton Hulk worked at the time. It made sense as an explanation and it mirrored the savage hulk depictions back then, he looks bang on for some of the Marc Silvestri art. But then when compared to other comic and video game depictions, like Marve vs Capcom or the PS2 Incredible Hulk, a more chonky Hulk was appropriate. I liked both Ang Lee and 2008 Hulk, but they were of a past time as much as I'd want to see another rampaging Hulk on screen.

2008 Hulk Design forever! I wish we had gotten more of it. Sure, tweak it a bit with each movie, half a percent more body fat, less green in the teeth, but like, that design is solid. Big hands, big feet, nice wide stance, good design all around, I don't need to see the same actor's face for it to be Hulk. The fact that Edward Norton did the motion capture is enough to have the characters of Bruce and Hulk still be the same physical body, but they've always been treated as two separate entities until merged, it's okay if they don't look the same in the face.

I disagree about Edward Norton’s likeness being replicated on Hulk. I really can’t stop seeing him in the features and mannerisms since you mentioned it. Remarkable. Amazing video as usual

The TV show was my first Hulk. My entire family watched Marvel and DC shows when I was a kid. I just borrowed the DVD collection from my sis and it may be nostalgia some of the episodes really hold up.

I know James doesn't fancy himself a comedian but even in an informative video like this he can't help but be naturally funny at 3:13.

Ruffalos Hulk in Avengers 1&2 is the best Hulk has ever been. The later movies aren‘t bad by the way, but that‘s a version of Hulk that can‘t be compared to the Hulk in earlier movies.

believe it was brian cox who said of ed norton, something along the lines of, "he's a gifted actor, but completely insufferable to work with as he fancies himself more a writer/director."
