Josh if you ever see , thank you for your explanations of effects, I have never understood a slap echo and now I love doing really overdriven sticcato chords to hear that sapbacck...it's weird, oh and starting at noon on everything has saved my life and honestly my tone, thanks buddy! I've been playing for 20yrs my God

For years I've snuck up on the edge of the pedal rabbit hole and took short, small looks. Around the mid-late 70's we were doing a cover of Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying, and a friend gave me a pedal that made 'whooshing' sounds, like surf, and I used that for awhile. When we added a 'Stones' set, I found a Boss BD, to make my 80W silver face twin w/jbl's growl a little. I liked the BD, and used it with a Morley volume/woah for years. During a 2 year sabbatical I loaned it to a friend and it disappeared. Also during that time I had my working guitars refreshed, and bought a new Yamaha RevStar w/P90's (shocked myself on that one LOL), now I'm making my very first pedal board!! That's a big deal for a cat that's been playing 55 years!! LOL I bought a Voodoo labs PS, and a new Boss BD2 so far. Found a comp90 at a garage sale, and bought a Korg tuner pedal. Now I'm listening to Sir Josh to determine what my essentials might be. Appreciate you guys!!! 8) --gary

Thank you Josh. Every reissue is ever a little miracle for guitar geeks. My question now is… what abiut the Echo Flanger? Millions of Nirvana fans are praying for a reissue of it. You know. It’s about that lovely filter matrix. 🙏

i have been watching/digging yer channel for a couple years. this is my favorite. EVER ! thanks.

I got one of these two weeks ago after watching your video. It's a tad darker than I was expecting but it's really nice. Even with the blend all the way off it adds some really nice thickness. I think it's boosting the lows or low mids a bit, but not totally sure. Fun pedal. Now I can keep my DM-2W set for longer delays and use this for slapback and thickening. Tightens up nicely with some compression in front of it. Really happy with it.

I use it with my deco saturation and it’s cool as hell It’s a delay that you have to play because it can get gnarly for me but also it’s perfect for the rockabilly surf licks.

I enjoy your content so much! Guitar pedals are freaking cocaine… You know what I mean. Crazy thing is I’m a drummer. I don’t know why I like these things so much it’s ridiculous. I do have to say though I really really really really really loved knowing what day you guys are dropping new episodes! I was never available on Mondays to watch the monologue live, but always found a way to figure out Wednesdays and Fridays. Give me one day and time that you’ll put out something consistently! Please. And if not, I’ll just watch when I can. Hope you’re doing well.

I know mini pedals are a controversial topic here, but I think the small enclosure works for this pedal, because it's something I can imagine people just sort of throwing in a random spot on an already established or nearly full pedalboard and having a little extra option

I'd personally love to see History of Electric Guitar finished up at some point, covering the genesis of the classic designs, though I realize that may be too labor intensive to be feasible. Slap-Back Echo to $300 by tomorrow!

When I first saw the the reissue, I immediately thought about that obscure EHX pedals episode. And the statement I made about not buying another pedal this year unless something crazy happens, like I find a vintage BK Butlers Tube Driver for an insane deal, or EHX actually reissues the Slapback Echo. I’m just waiting to get the Slapback, and last week got an insane deal on a vintage Tube Driver (1/6 of what a Bad Monkey is being sold for at the time of this video). So 3 months in, the two scenarios I deemed nearly impossible happened. I can’t wait to try them together. I love the Slapback’s doubling effect; it reminds me of that double tracked guitar on “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” (the third solo). Hope EHX continues to surprise!

😃😃😃 Yaaaaay!! The ol' feller @ EHX was lis'nin to ya, Josh! Mike Matthews, a living legend in pedal making history! Now, if he would reissue the EHX Electric Mistress Flanger "As Manufactured" in 1979-1980, for those "Spirit Of Radio/Alex Lifeson"- Flange Tones, I would DEFINITELY buy one, and later match it up with the Small Clone, and a Slap Back! If you're reading this, Josh, beg and plead, (or push, whatever needs to be done!), to have Mike M. METICULOUSLY recreate the Electric Mistress like Lifeson used on the intro to 'Spirit Of Radio!' Yeah, I've already heard that the current Deluxe Electric Mistress does the job, but there is 'something' missing, a 'thickness' or a 'warmth'. And it 'is' audible, I really don't think my ears or brain are playing tricks on me. If Mike can reissue the EXH Slap Back in a smaller enclosure, then he can faithfully recreate the 'Late 1970s-Early 1980s'- version of the EHX Electric Mistress Flanger, and put it in the 'current' Deluxe Electric Mistress enclosure, can he not? 🤔😐😁

Looks like a great pedal, the most shocking part of the video was Josh admitting that there is a version he doesn't have! I've never heard him say that before. The only EHX pedal I have is a Big Muff, but I will have to change that. There's a mad genius to their pedals that just goes outside other makers.

Oh man!

I would make a plea to EHX to dig deep into their history in Russia and build a pedal that will give me the tone of Ivan Drago punching the pressure meter in front of the press. As long as we are on a Rocky theme, maybe they could make a special version of the SlapBack that has a picture of Adrian slapping Clubber Lang.

My first impression of you chuggin' (at full echo and blend) was the intro to The Georgia Satellites', Keep Your Hands to Yourself.

Definitely need to squeeze this onto my board now.

BD-2 what a great workhorse of a pedal - dig it

Part of the plan for the physical emulation thing is to get a cheap and effective pedal for the analog version. The short time option switch and EHX price ratio pretty much rates, but in the nano it is especially perfect for the ultimate contrast. I can put one of these on the dry kill position into that analog spot. A/B comparisons will have to wait until I can score another JBL 2485, but it is not feasible to get the roll of conduit into the suburban yard here anyway. I could run just a low-pass into a cone transducer, even. Out on the farm I had hi/low pass filter and spare amp running fifty foot of conduit between the driver and horn. The mantra was always, of course, "They make a pedal for this". But yeah, fattens the tone.

That was, typically, something of a fiasco. I spent over a hundred dollars for flanges and such, but used gaffer tape for the final solution

Rushed out and bought one as soon as they came out. Perfect second delay.

Now if EHX could bring back the Zipper Envelope Follower in a small package that would be huge. I own over 25 of their pedals and that is one of my absolute favorites for lead tone.

@JHSPEDALS are you running the pedals into the front of the Kemper or in the effects loop? I'm giving up on the onboard effects and going to set up a pedal board for mine.... Might be a good Video - "Using the Kemper as a Pedal Platform Amp" 😀

@@jhspedals Respectfully, none besides the Tom Cram one and the Union Tube one, which, my apologies, I had forgotten about them. Obviously the new goal is lower output for your own sanity, just between the irregular changed schedule and fewer videos it feels like those ones I like best are coming less often! Sorry to call you out like that before though. I know Josh said no specific days anymore, but as many of us are invested fans, some communication on the changes would be cool, or even just saying which type of video would be upcoming (live, monday monologue, premade, etc).

JHS needs to produce the JHS Slap-Back Hair-Do pedal, inspired by the 2023 vs. 2021 JS hair cuts. A Big Muff with soft clipping "hair" on the fuzz. 2021-mode short and tight with a high top-end. 2023-mode, freeform, carefree and a bit of attitude to let the fuzz blossom bloom!

I am a bit late to the party, but I would really like EHX to reissue their big dual preamp tube pedal series. I got the Black Finger, and absolutely love it, actually even bought a backup recently, so now I got two Black Finger pedals, as it is an essential part of my setup. Unfortunately though I was stupid enough to the LPB 2ube stereo/dual channel tube preamp that I also owned at some point, and the The Wiggler, tube tremolo and vibrato pedal, that I also owned at some point. Very much regret that and would buy these again if you reissued them, as they are pretty rare to find used, and also costs more than they did originally from new.

pico sized "180" looper. would bookend the board nicely with the 2020 tuner.

IF you're a pedal maker and JHS's buddy and NOT listening to Josh and taking marketing/manufacturing advice from him, you are missing out!!!

Now some question comes to my mind. I have a Dod Hard Rock Distortion. As i understand, is a Distortion with a delay added to it. Is this a Slap back? Would you give some data about it sometime?

I have always been an EHX fan. Everyone clones them and charges 3 times the price of the original. The Tone Corset Compressor and the OD glove are two great affordable pedals from EHX.

Would love to know how I could recreate this on my Kemper with Delay? Tape Slapback?

Update the Screaming Bird with a level/output control and a frequency selector. Call it: Screaming Bloody Murder (as in a flock of ravens).

That is similar to Junior Brown he's the guy that did Better Call Saul

If anyone can answer the question below to educate me, please do! Why would you want a slap echo pedal? Doesn't it work just as well with any delay pedal that can have much longer delay time, but you just put the time very low to mimic slapback?

The slap echo is not just a short delay, it needs to have like no feedback repeats and a filter (in this case an analog circuit you can saturate with the gain). For the money, it’s a perfect one trick poney. TLDR: you could try get something close with more work for more money, or buy this if you just want a slapback on literal tap.

absolutely. some people always have a slap no matter what and this is cheap + analog, and simple. It also goes a little further than most delays because it has a gain knob - so it’s great for kicking on as a solo boost with built-in slapback. So it’s like a “soloing preset” in an analog pedal. it’s got a niche, but if you’re a slapback person you’ll get it. then you can keep your normal delay for other delay sounds.

I've been trying to get the slap-back of the Stones records 78-81. Can't seem to nail it with any of my pedals and I have some good ones. I was stoked to get this pedal but I'm really bad at settings. Anyone have a setting? I'm sure it's more Keith's right hand. Funny he really only gets mentioned by the Satisfaction fuzz but that's the last thing I want. But that's also a sound that I never hear sounding like the record.

I wish theyd reissue the polychorus and put it in a box like did with the Attack/Decay reissue. It looks like the vintage pedal just smaller, but not too small. Or reissue the EchoFlanger. Echoflanger or Polychorus. Either one. They're the same I'm told

The way that this is sounding at the beginning is that as you go clockwise, you are blending in only echo...so it adds latency to the signal and drives you totally insane. Other than that, seems like an awesome slap.

Blend is a mix between dry and wet. You can go clockwise for wet signal and yes. The delay will drive you nuts cause you can’t hear the dry signal. Same with memory toy. 12 o clock is 50/50
