How Durable is Tire Paint?
The follow up video to my tire lettering video. I used a combination of oil based paint and acrylic paint on my lettering.

You are the first person I saw address the different types of paint: i.e water based or oil based, also, on car vs off car. Did not think of that. Thanks for a good, informative video.

Sorry, I have some difficulty in listening. What does he recommend, at last?
It doesn’t matter if the tire is new or old, I did mine while they were on the car and even after the first 3 or so kilometres they were cracked up. The main problem is the tire flexes and the paint dries hard so any bits of movement in the rubber causes it to crack. For it to work the paint would need to stay partially wet ie like silicone to avoid the possibility of cracking.
Oil base pen colour will get yellowy after a moment later so I tried to put clear coat on top of letters with a brush. It’s been 3month, but still look similar as the first time when i did without cracking letters I think so far it’s the best way to do it

I did my Hankook tires with the White oil paint sharpie it's been a year and no cracks or chips. Ran my tires a month before painting them. I cleaned them with rubbing alcohol before painting them. I also don't used cleaners other than soap at the car wash.

Milwaukee oil marker was recommended over Sharpy...50/50 i suppose.
how long did you drive with these to get this kind of wear ?
Think tyre paint looks better worn.
And also with timp fluctuation tire pressure will expand and lesses as well as hitting bumps while driving will make the tire flex causing cracks as well.
Did you apply the paint in 3 coats? Makes a huge difference

FontuneTheTeller did you?
Interesting results. I "experimented" with oil based vs the acrylic a few years ago and had way better durability with the acrylic (both on new and used tires) . Didn't yellow/brown as quickly as oil. Neither like tire shine tho lol. I also found acrylic was easier to touch up (doesn't smear very much compared to oil based).

Really? What kind of acrylic did you use? I'm guessing that the reason mine did not come out well was because of it being from a paint pen.
@400ss

sir_dannyv I used the same paint pens actually lol. I think the difference was I didn't scuff up the tires with sand paper, I just cleaned the tires using wheel & tire cleaner and plastic bristle brush. I think the oil/resin still tires was what caused your results vs mine.
Good vid ... thanks mate

Of course not bruh, tyre flexes all around
I did my tiring painting on the car and it still cracks, the cracking is inevitable
As a fellow C28n wheel owner, it hurts me to see that rash
I used paint markers but ran out. I then used acrylic paint, a sealer, and clear coat. Not sure how long it will last.

Chris Oliveras you can but if the paint is too cracked it won't look as smooth. I drove the car for 2 weeks and then noticed the cracks. The problem was that I didn't paint the tires when they were mounted on the car. The sidewall flexed when I put them on the car and caused cracking.
@pmarasigan23

@@dverdin55when painting them while mounted on the car, does it matter if the letters that you're painting are on the top of the tire or the bottom?

Ranger tire paint. But I’m having trouble too. I believe that it’s mostly my tire preparation. I used greased lightning and a wire brush then just rinsed. We’re it holds it holds good. But where it cracks and flakes it looks bad. I’m just using the brush to scratch the painted parts and flake off the other. I’m on my third coat. I can see a fourth in my future. Tires off. Good years 2017.
I ran my new kimono tire for a couple hindered miles cleaned and painted still got cracking
When you touch it up do you have to remove old paint or can you just add more white on top of old paint?
@pastoryoda2789
3 жыл бұрын
add a new coat on top, i recommend using oil based paint for the first coat then seal it with liquid rubber paint like flex seal or Plasti Dip
It's cracking because you put on too many coats because the sidewalls flex
Nice video 👍

Enamel is oil based.
@aaronfuksa2047
3 жыл бұрын
Enamel is a finish...acrylic enamel, oil enamel. It was first synonymous with oil due to how hard coatings dried back in the day. A typical enamel sets up harder as time passes...a no go for a tire.
So its ACTUALLY oil can paint you use for this?
What brand oil based paint did you use
what paint did u use for the oil based?
How would you remove the paint if you don’t want it on your tires anymore?

I used some isopropyl alcohol on a rag. It took a while to get it off but i didnt scrub too hard and didnt use anything stronger than the alcohol as i didnt want to risk damaging the tire/drying it out or whatever. Whether or not isopropyl alcohol can damage a tire i dont know, but i just played it safe, and it worked for me :)
@DJGRoc

Good tip bruh
about how many pens does it take to complete the job?
@DJGRoc

That's gonna depend on how much you're painting, as well as how many coats you put. You'll definitely want several pens to do all 4 tires.

Can I shine my tires after the paint dries?
@dverdin55

Eric Valenzuela yes you can but it may discolor the acrylic paint. The oil paint should be cool
surface, it's rubber it flexes
Whats a heat reson?
@dverdin55
6 жыл бұрын
A reason why heat will mess up the tire paint? Its just on new tires mostly New tires have some resin on it from when they were made to keep them fresh and new. It goes away after you drive around on them. That resin will mess with the paint so its best to drive the tires around for a few hundred miles to get the resin out.

You must've fucked up one of the steps. 1. don't have cheap soft tires 2. use tire for at least a month first to break them in and insure paint doesn't crack 3. clean tires thoroughly with rubbing alcohol 4. apply 3 coats allowing paint to dry between coats and cure afterward.
