How Drinking Post Waterers Work

This is how Drinking Post Frost Free Automatic Waterers provide fresh, clean water every use without the need for electricity. Thirsty horse fills Drinking Post., When the horse is done drinking, all water drains completely out of the bowl and below the local frost line.

Seems to me that it wastes a lot of water. Am I right?

Hi Hans, Thanks for the question about wasting water. I truly believe the Drinking Post saves water in several ways. The base of the Drinking Post is buried 18″ below the local frostline and is connected directly to a pressurized waterline. When the animal is thirsty, they walk up to an empty bowl, push the paddle causing water will start to fill the bowl immediately. They typically start drinking as the bowl is filling. Then, when they are finished, they will release the paddle and any water that was not consumed will drain back down below the frostline into a leach field directly below the Drinking Post. The typical amount that drains back down is less than half a cup. In addition, water is not evaporating all day long as it does while sitting in a trough. With the Drinking Post, evaporation is minimal. That may seem a small amount of loss - depending on your climate, but folks in hot dry climates prefer the money savings of on-demand-water over water sitting in dry air. You'll find lots of good info here: dpwaterer.com/faq/. Thanks Hans

Can you elaborate on this? Only half a cup?? Wow. I’m having a hard time understanding how it could only be draining a half cup each time, but i may be wrong. If the ID of that PVC is 8”, let’s say, then if the water level dropped about 0.125 inches, (1/8th of an inch!) That volume would equal a half cup. But I’m assuming the water level drops quite a bit, maybe a foot or two, in order to get below frost line. What am i missing?

@@jallison22 The bowl is supplied by and drains through a 1/2" CPVC line.
