I just saw your system and thank you for sharing. Up north in extreme cold climates they is a "Nose Pump" system used for cattle. It does not freeze , no algea, nor other issues with water troughs. The Nose Pump System I learned about was used in Canada in early 2000. They recommended to start cattle on the system in the spring & summer so when winter stops by cattle are already using system. Both systems fit the "bill to get water to livestock" Now I am retired and devote many hours to water systems ; underground, air, water pans, ponds, storage etc for cattle from extreme heat to cold. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! I LOVE IT :)

We occasionally get to minus 40, and you have to go down 6 feet with yard hydrants. We looked at this a few years ago, and I believe you place it on top of old tires in the hole to go deeper. We may do this next summer (ground is frozen solid right now), but it would be nice to not have to deal with water (and the bill to heat it in Wisconsin) for our horses in the winter. Great video -- nice to see an install.

How much time does it take from when they press the paddle until it is full enough to drink and how quickly does it drain out when they stop? And any training issues with the cows learning to use it?

No they learned instantly, the only thing you need to do is fill it the first time for them. It takes about 2 seconds to have water start pooling and maybe a few more to drain. I’ll do a little test to see on the coldest days

Very convenient, but it seems that it might double your water bill or worse if the animal plays with it. For every little drink the animal takes the entire vertical section of water is dumped into the gravel? The frost free yard hydrant at least only drops the water once and when you’re done filling a larger bowl.

Love this idea! But why so close to fence? Cows are hitting their face on wire.

We are removing that fencing above the unit so both paddocks can use the same waterer, 2x the use!

This may sound stupid but does this work in permafrost?

This is easy enough to make on your own. It works exactly like a public drinking fountain with a depressable valve. Congrats getting it for free, but if I were to do this, I would just go buy the proper plumbing valves from the hardware store. The whole thing, including fountain base, etc. should cost no more than $100.

Wish you could have shown how you connected those lines to the well…

2:56 Poor planning. Glad didn't get hurt, but clearly a mistake. Better to fix that oops a safer method like back filling. Got away with it. -- Our frost line is under 1 foot. Fascinating what needs doing up north.

Looks so good. Hope the cow's cannot freeze there Lip's on that metal. Too bad it isn't for colder climate and harsh winter ,like in Canada and northern USA.

I see, we have often the same temperatures. My waterline have to be 8'deep otherwise it freeze. The company say on there homepage, that isn't for harsh weather or cold climate. Lol.

Hey! I have a question I want to be a farmer one day and I wanted to know what's the best animal to raise that gives the best profit? And how many do I need to provide for a family. Thx

Please remember animals are not food. I've lived on farms my whole life and I found i love horses and cows the most. I keep mine as companions. In fact I'm starting a farm animal sanctuary. So if you decide to become a farmer please raise organic produce and leave the animals out of it. It's a lot of hard work too. Thanks for listening

Just fyi. Pipe size will not effect pressure, but it will effect volume by the size and reducing friction loss

Doesn’t more volume create more pressure?

So after a year, how’s the bar bar a working out? Any unforeseen problems? Also did I hear correctly that you purchased the one for pigs instead of the one for cattle?

We LOVE our Bar Bar A waterer. It has improved winter on the homestead so much. Works great for the large livestock. Now to be honest, doesn’t work great with pigs…. The reason why is the pigs nose is dirty, and they drink from it and clog it with dirt and small rocks, which then freezes. To fix this Bar Bar A (who’s customer service is great) sent us a small filter device, which needs cleaned daily. So not perfect for pigs, but still works just needs daily cleaning in the winter of being used for pigs. For cows, and other large livestock, this thin works flawless.

@@Homesteadyshow that’s awesome. I just began raising a couple of cows and was thinking about a better way to get water to them especially when freezing temps set in. I’m in central TX, which usually doesn’t get too many freezing days but in Feb we had a polar vortex that froze over the pond. Did you ever consider other products like Drinking Post?

You installed the pig model because it was durable but said it could be used for all farm animals. The only problem is, you can only use for animals that stand the same height or taller. The one you installed can't be used for pigs because it's too tall. Otherwise, pretty good video.

Actually it can, the project on our farm included installation of heavy traffic area pads, which are gravel pads. The finished height will be higher than what you see in the video, meaning pigs will have no problem drinking from them.

Man I wish they made them for rabbits and/or poultry we have to do morning and night watering and they have to get what they can in the ten minutes or so before it freezes... most things that work for rabbits water wise also work for poultry since they are all low to the ground (also for bird brooders I'll never again use anything but rabbit water nipple set up or a basic rabbit water bottle but that's also a warm weather thing)

Haha my son said that today, he is our chicken man and he want's one. We use the plug in heated nipple waterers for chickens

Was it expensive to have it installed? My husband carries buckets to fill our horse tank, to several goat pens, & to the chickens, poor guy. It gets -40 here & while I don't care for the colder weather chores specifically dealing with water SUCK. I wish things were easier for him! (& me when he's out of town on business & I carry buckets 😆)

So only one cow at a time gets to drink ?

You should have had a flush of shitakd already....did you soak the log again in cold water, over night, in thd creek (?) - and then smack them hard on the ground on both end sides of the log (called shocking) aftef thd cold water bath as I suggested about 2 months ago? Also, they will not produce forever, but you can expect 2-3 years, then it will slow down and stop once the mycelium has run its course through the entire log.

You and your dad seem to always be digging in the dirt.

You called this the "pig model?"......do you have pigs? do they use this? it seems "not ideal" for pigs- height, tiny bowl.......we have pigs and need a great way to prevent water freezing in winter. I like this whole concept just not sure it will work well with pigs. Thanks.

This video is about twice as long as it needed to be. Why stop and explain about straddling a ditch then you go in the other lot and took the fence down?
