How did this even evolve like this, I can't imagine the mutations along the way
@user-fg5xs9lh7s
Ай бұрын
Baleen is made from the same material as hair and skin so it very rarely fossilises so it's evolution isn't completely understood. Whales at one point had teeth, but when the Antarctic broke off from gondwana to form the Antarctic circumpolar current, the number of prey available in oceans increased. around this time some whales changed strategies from using their teeth to kill singular prey, to using their tongue to suck in water so they can feed on multiple fish at the same time (still with teeth). The problem though is that they can't just swallow all that water so they have to let some of it out without letting the fish out. One idea is that baleen originally formed as a sort of keratinous filling between the teeth, to reduce the size of the holes fish could potentially escape through. Over time the structure of the keratin became more intricate, while the whales lost their teeth, until you're left with modern day baleen. Another idea is the keratin in their gums might've been serving an entirely different purpose, but when switching to suction feeding it was repurposed into baleen. Another idea is that rather than just switching to suction feeding there was some kind of intermediary strategy that used suction but not as as their main method of hunting, perhaps only to keep the prey from escaping once caught. Or maybe it's a combination of all of these. Again, baleen is essentially specialised skin, so fossils of this stuff are extremely rare, so we only have proposed mechanisms and no confirmed ones.
@TheThingoftheSky
Ай бұрын
@@user-fg5xs9lh7s what always fascinated me, is the existence of evolution itself. Isn't it kinda weird? Like what makes the next generation's genes go, oh we need a thing over here to filter out fish. Like the idea that there is some sort of mechanism that makes these changes and iterations. Like I know it's a long process and all, but still. It's almost mystical to me. Know what I mean? Like the whale wanted to do one thing and the next generation just slowly adopted these features...idk .... how does a desire of a whale turns into genetic code and translate to another generation 😮
@user-fg5xs9lh7s
Ай бұрын
@@TheThingoftheSky The "secret sauce" is sex. Organisms that reproduce sexually have a lot of variation in them. Other than biological twins you probably won't ever find humans that look the same, for example, because of sexual reproduction. Asexual organisms don't have even close to the same level of variation, because their genes don't get swapped with each other. Basically what that means is, nothing needs to really be invented. If a characteristic is going to be beneficial, some guy somewhere probably has it, and it's the same with whales. Some whale somewhere might've been weird and had different shaped lips that help contain fish or something like that. And then in later generations some whale was weird and it changed more. And then in later generations the skin hardened into keratin. Etc etc. like I said before nobody knows the exact evolutionary pathway baleen took this is just an example. But the trick that makes it work is that no individual step needs to be invented, because of sex. If a trait could be an advantage, some guy somewhere probably already has it, and as the traits get selected they'll keep piling on over and over. Think of it like you're blindfolded, and I hand you a bag full of Lego bricks. Most of them will be flat with the stubs sanded off (non-beneficial traits), but some of them will have the stubs intact still (beneficial traits). If you keep smashing random legos together eventually just from trial and error you're gonna have a pretty big tower of bricks.
@TheThingoftheSky
Ай бұрын
@@user-fg5xs9lh7s so there's no "magical mechanism" involved (that would give the next generation a trait that the previous one really wanted lol), it's just genetic code piling up, kinda Yea?

@@TheThingoftheSkyOR maybe just maybe the idea of evolution is just an invention to sidetrack us from the truth that God created everything exactly how it should be in the first place. That way we don’t need to evolve as everything works in perfect harmony from the get go.

@@jdantas6612 I think a more realistic comparison is humans eating bugs. Bugs are very nutritious despite being so small, much smaller than that the smallest of animals a human can eat. You would think humans would not be able to survive on bugs alone since they are so small and humans are big, but there are millions of bugs in the planet, many more bugs than all other animals in the world combined, we would run out of beef and chicken before we ran out of bugs. Same thing with whales eating krill, krill is small but it's one of the most plentiful food sources in the ocean.

@user-fg5xs9lh7s

@TheThingoftheSky
@user-fg5xs9lh7s
@TheThingoftheSky

@@TheThingoftheSkyOR maybe just maybe the idea of evolution is just an invention to sidetrack us from the truth that God created everything exactly how it should be in the first place. That way we don’t need to evolve as everything works in perfect harmony from the get go.

I've always seen it more as them not exactly eating the krill but the krill swarms. Like, for us, it would be like us surviving on a burger rather than the molecules of a burger.
@DavidHernandez-dk1zs
Жыл бұрын
@@jdantas6612 I think a more realistic comparison is humans eating bugs. Bugs are very nutritious despite being so small, much smaller than that the smallest of animals a human can eat. You would think humans would not be able to survive on bugs alone since they are so small and humans are big, but there are millions of bugs in the planet, many more bugs than all other animals in the world combined, we would run out of beef and chicken before we ran out of bugs. Same thing with whales eating krill, krill is small but it's one of the most plentiful food sources in the ocean.
