Defecation was explained in the anatomy picture. Everything he eats is converted by mineral stomach into carbon soup that is then filtered by kidneys and excreted through the skin to form new layers of his armor plates. So in other words, he shits through his skin and his armor is made of solidified shit.

He was also on a time limit. Thanks to the recruits of the Future Foundation, Ben sheds his rocky shell once a year, turning back into his human form, which is why his rocky shell was falling off so easily. His shell was ready to fall off on his honeymoon, and his evil father-in-law, Puppetmaster, was going to use Hulk to kill him when he was de-powered.

@Philip Hockenbury : Agreed. Ben's ability to go the distance against stronger beings is virtually a superpower in itself. Ever see when the Elder of the Universe, Champion, challenged Earth's vastly strong types; wanting to prove his superiority using Terran boxing rules? He disqualified Hulk for going 'Hulk-wild', Namor for not being at full strength out of water, Thor for using Mjolnir; and KO'd almost everybody else. But not only did he respect Ben's boxing skills; the Elder was so impressed by Ben's refusal to stay down for the count, no matter how hard & repeatedly he battered him; that he conceded victory to him. One of The Thing's greatest victories was won by refusing to accept defeat.👊

  • @dethkruzer

    11 ай бұрын

@@r.a.fgattaiguy845 hard to say. The thermal conductivity of minerals can differ greatly, but even if it was more on the insulating side, it isn't a solid shell. The soft tissue underneath could also have something comparable to sweat glands to help regulate his body temperature. But I think it's unlikely his body temp would be too extreme unless his cellular metabolism was a lot more resistant to changes in temperature. Even if his rock shell had insulating proper, and his metabolism required extremely high or low temperatures to function, then his body would have to constantly expend resources to maintain that temperature. Although all this is assuming that his cellular metabolism functions in a generally similar fashion to a human.

In the case of rocky nerve system, I have a solution. Some types of quartz crystals can generate a voltage when compressed. They're used in watches to power the clock mechanism instead of a mechanical spring. So perhaps the nerves were replaced with strand-like structures made out of quarts or a similar crystal Also, the Thing cracking his whole arm to knock out the Hulk is such a rad scene, and we probably won't ever see it in the movies, probably for the best also

marvel characters usually have hidden facets to their powers. for example, mystique can change her gender (and produce sperm); cyclops' optic beam actually doesn't generate heat, but only concussive force (the movies portrayed it wrong); and wolverine's blood gives vampires the ability to walk freely during the day.

  • @ronn-ammon8975

Since his original leathery hide hardened into rock, l've always assumed he still had some of that hide underneath. The story where his rock breaks off kinda confirmed it to me, except he's apparently softer underneath than I'd've thought. The scenes of him being cut by Wolverine is like ghosts of arguments past for me. The Thing, Hulk, or anybody else w/ hide, armor, etc. that can withstand tons of force being sliced up by Wolverine makes NO d@mn sense. An unbreakable blade doesn't mean one can automatically penetrate any/all materials of lesser structural integrity. You'd still need strength, or at least mass, to put sufficient force behind that blade.Something approaching the target's structural integrity of your target (or could ANYBODY w/, say an adantium pocket knife could dismantle a heavy battle tank?). Yeh, Wolvie's disproportionatly strong for his size, but even IF he can supposedly generate tons of force since his "upgrade"; he certainly couldn't do it then. Ironic that a character whose personality was based on Ben's gets to ignore physics due to the appeal of that persona; but Ben often had/has one of his primary powers ( his rock-like resistance to injury) downplayed for the benefit of other characters.

@ uu : Thanx. The inconsistency proves my point. He should have a very hard time cutting any of them, IF at all. Yet he's sliced into both Ben and Hulk w/ relative ease; but not Colossus. Maybe such sloppy writing only applies when he's not fighting another X-Man? Even worse than cutting Ben's face was him jumping onto Hulk's shoulders & popping his claws directly into the Hulk's brain ( due to Hulk's mindless rage state & high regeneration, it wasn't as harmful as one might think; but -). Considering the structural strength of Hulk's skull, at best Wolvie should've just been pushed off by his own claw muscles; or, at worst he should've torn through his own arm tendons.. But again, no in-story logic, just sloppy writing.

The Thing does have a junk, Stan confirmed it in a interview with Vanity Fair he said and I quote "I guess common sense would say it was made of orange rock too." Not to mention it's kinda always been implied that he has one and that he still needs to use the restroom to especially since I vaguley remember him having a restroom in his room. Also if he didn't have a junk some writer would had most definitly been made Ben run around naked like the Abomination, A-bomb, Groot, and so on in daylight with any shadows covering him from the audience. Though even if he didn't have a junk I would have assumed that he would have had a cloaca like some birds and fish do.

I think a lot of people think he is made out of rocks...He's not. His physiology is SO dense that it just appears like rock, but it IS actually flesh...His skin is so dense and dry, that it cracks and flakes like stone, but it is in fact organic, and actually MUCH stronger than any rock. And yes the Thing does have a "thingy"...All his biologics function just as a normal human, just in a form much more dense, powerful and tough.

So it's like a turtle shell with extra steps. It looks like rock, has the same consistence but it's not. Which means an earthbender would not be able to control him, But which also means he would not be immune to the petrifing power of Medusa. It makes sense, even because "made out of rocks" is vague AF. Rocks are made of way many meterials, and I don't think Ben's skin is part of the list.

You should cover more Fantastic Four comics. They're consistently really fun and wild to read with a lot of pathos and cool visuals. The original Stan Lee and Jack Kirby run is particularly insane. Honestly weird hearing Ben Grimm being called the Thing so much in the video, personally. After reading so many FF issues, you stop thinking about their superhero names and just call them by the people underneath. It helps that as a family, they hardly call each other by their superhero names. It's funny you say that Marvel can't have one of their staple characters be "going through it," because most of Ben's publication history since 1962 is pretty much just constant agony and it's only post-2010s that he's finally allowed to be permanently happy.

But one thing it doesn't answer is how he and Alicia had kids and so many different universes. Also for some reason Ben does not age as long as he does not return to Human. Initially he was supposed to be able to turn his powers on and off like everyone else in the Fantastic Four but for some reason his ability to control his power turn them on and off got screwed up at least according to the Future Foundation storyline.

I believe this diagram was from a slightly older but official marvel book on the ways the heroes powers and abilities work, but like the video explained that in most canon versions he's still got all his functional organs in his body still although many fused or changed to support his new form and it is also explained that his skin is rock like not actual rock it's more akin to a more advanced version of an armadillos shell, so he can still feel even through his skin although most likely somewhat lessened and still has his reproductive organs which means he can have sex and help produce children.

Just because it works like teeth doesn't mean it needs the same nerve density. Those don't do anything for structure. Also: Even if it was exactly like that, Thing would simply be used to it. Quick experiments to validate this at home: Close your eyes and cover them with your hands. This will ideally block out all light. If that happens you will still see something which is the background noise of the visual nerves. But your brain put it on full amplification because its not getting a satisfying response. Same works for hearing. If the environment is silent enough you can hear your own pulse. Many people might have experience with that lying in a silent room with your ear on a pillow. It's all about your brains interpretation of the signal, the signal is always pretty garbage.
