    MMA started as guys coming from different disciplines and competing to see who was the best. The mix occurred in the octagon. The game evolved to where the mix occurred in the fighters themselves. They mixed the disciplines in themselves to compete to no longer see which discipline is the best but which fighter has the best mix and to see if they can impose their strongest discipline on another fighter. It is natural for Gordon and others to want to see if they can still impose their discipline on another fighter who’s trying to do the same. He doesn’t need to do this. The point is this Chael, the premise of Gordon coming to MMA is the exact reason MMA started years ago.

He has said he wants to go into mma and imo this seems like the perfect time. As a big sports fan and casual MMA fan, I can honestly say I've never heard of Gordon Ryan until 2 weeks ago. If he was in the UFC dominating like this millions like me would know who he was and he could reach GSP status. Marvel movies ect....

  • @kellyd2436

    @kellyd2436

    Жыл бұрын

    You've stated yourself as the casual fan, that would be why. Most people are and those that are are more conditioned to the KO aspect of fighting versus the appreciation of submission grappling. This is due to the popularity of boxing, long before mma was popular and the organization UFC. Since the average person lacks the understanding of the mechanics for a solid punch or of ground fighting, it becomes boring to a degree. That's why when there's two well matched opponents with strikes, counters, clinches and scrambles after takedowns or lack of, people boo. I've watched UFC since UFC 1, it's not the be all end all. It took nearly two decades for it to be mainstream. Just because you've never heard of someone and believe if they were elsewhere they would be other than what they are is pure conjecture. Not everyone that competes wants that as it's the only answer.

    I'm still a total newb in bjj but I haven't seen anyone speak in bjj or in all of sports like the way Danaher speaks. Seems like everyone else is firing at the hip or just screwing around in comparison. Gordon says "my opponents don't know jiu-jitsu," and "everything I do is a rational decision." Danaher's systematic approach is the most focused I've seen. Just watch the first Rogan interview he did where he breaks down Gordon vs Cyborg. Not surprising given that he was in academia for philosophy.

On the other hand, he can cement his legacy as the goat in BJJ if he sticks with it, he's already pretty much there but he can do so much more to build a record that might be nearly impossible to beat (eg, Karelin in wrestling) so the question is what does he want, to be a good, maybe great fighter or go down in history as the biggest legend in BJJ sports history?
