ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions. ABOUT US Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Incredible description of the mind - as in the little child watching a movie and images flickering across the screen, where the screen can't be seen or realised until the movie is turned off and only then is the nature of the screen is seen. I've never heard this before, but I found this description incredible!

The yogic path of silencing the mind is what worked for me. Only silencing the mind is not something you can do. It slows down on its own, like a spinning top eventually comes to rest.

The answer to the question is volition. I was at work and the body was working, "I" had become absorbed while walking to work and it persisted for about 3 hours, working was still able to continue, until "I" had something very important to attend to, that was what took me out of that state of Oneness, my consciousness returned to the body .

I needed this talk Swamiji 🙏🏻❤️‍🔥 when I was a young boy, i experienced the death of a brother. One day while I was crying, I was suddenly torn down the middle by what I'm guessing now was the Kundalini within starting to move. Then I was overcome by "the holy spirit" (raised Christian) which was this feeling of pure bliss and I knew that to be my real Self. I wouldn't say my mind stopped - but my perspective shifted completely. I understood that I was actually the observer of this imagined person who happened to be suffering. I literally saw myself in the room, and the room itself, and I was all of it. I used to be able to slip in and out of this state at will. Was this technically sabija samadhi?

❤ the clarity! Very convincing ... what Swamiji is saying about once you EXPERIENCE the reality beyond mind, the further experiences of the world, mind etc cease to be obstacles- this thought first struck me after listening to a few NDEs ftom some very articulate minds-- and that EXPERIENCE of a few moments is SO REAL/TRUE- that it never leaves them for a moment from that point on returning ( in most xases unwillingly !) to their physical bodies! Their entire being is so aware of that realm beyond the life on earth in physical bodies-- its what i understood all the dualities and conflicts thereof just disappear in th air!! Now Swamiji's explanation ofcourse clarifies this further... Thank you❤🙏

Insane ❤ explanation, that I needed, it's been years since I lived in fear hearing all the stillness, samadhi... Stop the mind... teaching and freaked like anything. Now your explanation, brought some clarity today. I know what I need to work on. With knowledge is also possible, it is a relaxation. Now, whatever that shortens the journey.. I can do it without fear of losing everything.

Namaste. I enjoy listening to you almost daily. When you quoted a swami or yogi saying only when the mind is still you can know/feel God , in my experience at times even when I am living daily doing my routine stuff I can still 'hear' the divine communicating with me, comforting me and loving me. Very clearly. So it is not necessary to have the mind under such strict control to know God. Just an observation...

This can happen in two ways, and both will be seen by the world as some form of madness/ mental derangement. 1. The first one is due to a deep passion for and love for God, and constantly returning the mind and thoughts to revolve around God. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and devotees like Mirabai, exemplify the highest levels of such " madness" in and for God/ chosen deity. During their lifetimes, they also faced ridicule and were called mad. But they did not care for the calumny and taunts of the world. But God or God's voice was not sensed by them as a constant background chatter, infiltrating into the mind, but any of their conversations with God were only when they voluntarily/ volitionally endeavoured during prayer and worship , or even during lay activities to so communicate with God. 2. The second type of experience of frequently or constantly 'hearing' God and communicating with him, is in fact a delusional state of the mind arising from schizophrenic tendencies and/ or bipolar disorder, and needs medical treatment. One needs to be sure which one of these methods/ forms of " communicating" with God is the reality in one's case, and without a proper Guru to assess the true Nature of your God experience, self- assessment is not reliable. Doctors would classify both types as a sort of madness. But the first type is an ennobling madness for God, the second one is a life sapping, enfeebling delusional medical madness.

Matchless articulation of a brilliant question....! Such profound deliberation and insightful clarification perhaps become possible only when the preceptor is self-realized ! The simile of cinema and screen seem to be the best to think of ! If the mind can be consciously detached from the objects of distraction or delusion following any branch of 'Yoga' (or any other methods whatsoever) expounded in the scriptures like 'Rajyoga' or 'Kriyayoga' for example, it can be zeroed in on the absolute being ! Once this sublime state is achieved, the mind that is accustomed to get busy in worldly affairs, begins to experience the ineffable truth, inexpressible ever new joy and can decisively distinguish between the 'REAL' and 'UNREAL' . Respectful salutations to revered Swami Sarvapriyanandaji maharaj 🙏🏻💐

The consciousness that observes the mind is the real Brahman meaning if the mind is still and silent it goes into observance mode which is what is Brahman, a thing or a state that cannot be explained because it is beyond description like in the Mandukya Upanishad. Yet it has to be spotted or experienced meaning only the experiencer knows and none else. Therefore, the best way is to make efforts life long or even through more future lives to ultimately catch up with the Truth until then happy endeavouring😊. The one and only Jagadguru Adi Sankara however said that it is possible to experience and in fact went on explaining the same for others to follow in his elaborate Bhashya or commentary on the principal non-dual texts namely Bhagavad-Gita, the Ten Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras. We have to keep listening to these commentaries and practise for the grand realization to dawn on.🙏

Poojya Swamiji Pranams!! Swamiji, there is a state of mind where it goes blank. There is no thought working in the mind nor anything like enlightenment happening. It happens automatically just like that without any efforts. It appears to be a biologically buit in traint/state. After listening to all the spiritual discourses we find we are not where we were nor reached where we should be.
