How Does Fat Give Us an Evolutionary Advantage?

Ғылым және технология

Fat often gets a bad rap, but it isn't our enemy. From its role storing energy to releasing hormones that control the feelings of hunger, it's essential to us every single day.

Fat is an evolutionary advantage. It allows us to store a lot of energy in relatively dense packages; gram for gram, fat is the most efficient way to store energy in our bodies.
But don’t get it twisted, fat is more than just a storage center, it’s an ever-changing organ that contributes to our wellbeing.
In today’s Human, we’re not talking about dietary fats like the ones from oil, butter, or meat. This video focuses on fat as adipose tissue, a collection of different cells that we have in different locations in our bodies. This type of tissue is made of endothelial cells, a few immune cells, but mostly a special type of cell called adipocytes.
In every gram of adipose tissue, you’ll find anywhere from one to two million adipocytes.
And it might surprise you that fat cells aren’t passive structures. Adipocytes are living, metabolizing cells with structures like nuclei that hold DNA.
But most of an adipocyte’s body is a storage site for lipid, the energy storage we’re so interested in.
We have approximately 30 billion fat cells, and when we store some excess energy, the cells will grow in size. Then if they can’t grow anymore but you still need to store energy, you’ll grow new fat cells so you can store more energy.
Humans have visceral fat (the type of fat you’re used to seeing that lives in the abdomen and surrounds your internal organs) and we have subcutaneous fat, a fat that exists under the skin.
Find out all the ways these different fats work to support your body and help you function day-to-day in this Human.

It builds interest without scaring off the casual viewer (like myself), PBS does the same. Most people have some understanding of the human body already so it’s easier to be more in depth, I think, but space or physics 😳😳

Either look past the fat and get to know the person for who they really are or help them in a positive way to lose it. Dopamine, advertising, lack of money, willpower, motivation and making fun of to me are the top 6 reasons American's are so overweight and obese.

Fat is probably the only thing without feedback mechanism in our bodies as this mechanism was never required, we could never become too fat to harm us and not absorbing food you ate (the simplest feedback mechanism) would be a blasphemy to organic efficiency and nature's waste-recycle protocols (eating food only to shit it). On the other hand, muscle tissue is the most regulated and heavily suppressed and could be our savior, as it raises the required calories to maintain weight, making fat gain harder and harder to achieve the more muscle you have. A GDF-8 receptor modulator/blocker could be a promising, possibly risk-free prevention/assisted treatment to obesity. Since its more and more difficult not to gobble down great amounts of calories and it's harder and harder to lose them after gaining them with our bodies clenching on them more and more each time we lose them, we could at least force our bodies in a composition to need them.

The suffix "-cyte" does not mean that the thing you're talking about is a living, metabolizing cell. Dead adipocytes are still adipocytes, even if they don't metabolize anymore. In the same way, a erythrocyte (red blood cell) can be argued to not be properly alive anymore, as it lacks its nucleus and hence can't produce any new mRNAs or proteins, they can only make new or repair old stuff as long as it takes the existing mRNAs to break down and then they're done. A "-cyte" is simply a cellular structure, full stop.

As a Biologist, hooray for finding a new source for stem cells, but oh hell no at creating Siamese twins out of mice. I completely understand the need for animal testing, but THAT, I think, is pushing it.

7:44 keeping carbs to a minimum and increasing fats gets you into keto, probably the only “diet” or method that regulates body fat once you’re body is used to using fat for fuel.

Why can't we turn Adipose cells into cells that can make insulin for diabetic patients, then inject those into the diabetic? You can use the patient's own adipose cells so there will be no rejection issues. Make it so!
