I picked up two sprues of the new Epic Napoleonic cavalry from the December edition of Wargames Illustrated magazine at Salute and I thought i'd see how they compare with some of my older 15mm Napoleonics.....

    They match up well, it's really only the more "realistic" proportions that the plastic has vs the old metals. Paint job is great too!

    Interesting to see Warlord expanding into Napoleonics (at least 1 of his battles). A brave decision in many ways. The greater variety of troops (compared to ACW) is always going to challenge a new range. The practicalities of plastics (large production runs) revive the old Airfix problem of never having the right ratios of the minority troop types. For gamers there's also the lack if a compatible Kallistra range to fill out gaps in your roster. Let's face it, Wellington's multinational force has a lot of Dutch, Belgians, Nassauers.... each with varieties of horse, foot and guns. I cannot imagine all those types being available as epic plastic. I wish both Warlord and their players luck.

    Never thought of that point before Dom, and it is one well made - about the closeness of these new Naps to older 15mm. Maybe the arrival of epic might tempt more people into the smaller scale Naps allowing others to blow the dust off their old 15mm armies to fight new competitors in a "close enough" scale. I think there would be more old metal armies in red and blue than were in blue and grey. Hopefully less button counting at that scale that otherwise might (understandably) scare off the excited new guys. Really these Napoleonics are just making me more hopeful for an ECW range in the future. Do it Warlord soon. Do iiiiiiiit.

    if you look at any of the Warlord big box sets they never do symmetrical forces . for example , one side will have cavalry but no artillery , and the other side will be the other way around . i assume this is to guarantee that you will almost immediately have to buy at least one more box of something in order to make the forces equal .

    When I was looking at getting into 15mm for the Peninsular campaign was advised that 15mm was a loose guide and some are bit smaller some go up to 18mm. These will be good for the 100 day campaign and I'll look at the traditional '15mm' and 28mm for the Peninsular war campaigns.

    Most of the Hanoverian line regiments started out as light infantry and many still wore that uniform at Waterloo. In addition to the Hanoverian militia, all the Dutch militia wore the stovepipe shako. With some imagination, there are plenty of uses for the formed up rifles.

    I think you will need to get Laura the equivalent of the bromide for her to keep Ken under control over Epic. For him it will go the same way as the ACW epic. Dom you will get the sizes of the green plastic bases as for the ACW. They are a lot better casting than the early Lammings and Minifigs and would match for size. The Hussars look like Mikes Models.

    Very nice showcase. I MIGHT buy into Epic Napolionic. This Epic scale brings back my self when I was a kid when I had my own 1/72 Napolionic army. What is the name of the manufacture of those other 15mm? Any one know? In mass they acctully all fit together very good I think of what I can see. For the 95th I guess you have to get your cutters out and make your own skirmisline, kitbashing. But I think WL would release a " skirmish kit " only for 95th? Take care 👍

    Your Dragoon guards look to be Mini Figs and the Hussars in front look to be Old Glory brand (got both myself). From my matching it looks like they were just a bit larger than Mini Figs but not a bad match. if the infantry holds true to the same scaling, then they learned after the Civ War run to scale them with other lines so people will not have to start over (or pass on the smaller figs). Going to base mine for Napoleons Battle rules (First Ed Avalon Hill) as I can also use them for Command and Colors Napoleonic's and Black Powder as there is no set basing rules for that rules set. Likely will get more cav but not sure on the infantry as I am already overloaded and prefer the peninsular campaign or Austrians myself (Now a infantry sprue of Austrians with Grenzers for the skirmishers on the other hand). Also have over 2K metal figs already about half of which are painted. Last the price point for a box set for one side is a bit over the top and will scare off first timers into the era. WAAYYY too expensive for a couple of dozen plastic sprues, they think they are GW or something?

    These look great. I have my napoleonics all in 1/72 scale from Airfix, Revell. Italeri etc. Can anyone tell me how 15mm compares size wise? Or 28 mm? Are either compatible with 1/72.. Id love to try the Black powder ones but the figures look a bit coarse and stunted in height - like they have a hormonal problem with growth, if you know what I mean!

  • @BootsontheTable

    @BootsontheTable

    1/72 will be too big for 15mm but too small for 28mm. Its pretty much 20mm scale. I would stick with your 1/72, if you have a loads of those already and there are some nice ranges

  • @gueststrivler
    @gueststrivler2 жыл бұрын

    I think 15mm is on its way to becoming "Betamax" and that 12mm will be ubiquitous, at least for big battles ...the only figs I'm aware of which match 12mm approximately (as near as makes any difference) are the very ancient Peter Laing ranges and (not Napoleonic) Kallistra. Waterloo was the obvious starter range to suit the British market, but I hope Russians, Austrians and Prussians come on stream eventually too.

  • @BootsontheTable

    @BootsontheTable

    I cant say I agree on the 15mm - so many ranges out there already and many players love them. For new players the pricepoint of epic does make it very interesting though.

    As a napoleonic miniature player I m pleased to see interest again in this the queen of games. But, inspite of the quality , I must ask WHYWHY WHY make them not the same scale? As the prime makers of five slightly grow the scale to 17- 18 mm these become less desirable. Bless them none the less, but damn what a opportunity lost.

  • @BootsontheTable
