Natural 12 on firing gives a destiny roll also...
I think what you described with GdA is interesting. I seem to recall that the BP rules specifically say that BP was developed to have half a chance of completing a game in an evening. A case of horses for courses perhaps?
indeed i think you are right BP was designed for exactly that
True wargamer sounds like true metal back in the 80ies. I really love some Manowar tracks but that was as BS as this idea is. Also it is the same buttoncounter debate all over again.
good point
Crikey Dom. If that was mine I would take about a year painting them up, or more. Looks awesome though. 👍
i can't deny its a bit daunting!
£ 240 sounds a lot but you get a lot for your buck thanks for showing what's inside so people can decide if they want to buy or not......Maybe you can catch a deal on e bay in the future.
agreed plus of course you can just buy smaller sets too
Seems great value to me. I was asked at the club if I was going to added it to my games. I will, but think it will be next year as I have Epic ACW and thanks to Stu the Epic Pike and Shotte to paint up first. Plus attacking my 15mm WW2 stash over the next few months :)
yes you have got your work cut out there mate!
And that was a good and right minded rant!
cheers matey
I do wonder why they even consider the 10x6 foot table for some of the big battles. I thought the reason for epic scale was that you could fight those battles on a table size most mortals would have access to at home.
yeah cant say i wasnt surprised by that too
An enjoyable watch thank you. Cheers.
cheers mate
Warlord has put together an amazing box full of stuff here. The price seems fair for what is included, and seems a far better deal than many of GW’s current offerings.
agreed mate
Yeah with gw you get the start of an army ... This is two full armies. I wonder how many of the scenarios are playable with what is in this box.
Great unboxing all I can say is wow that a lot there I don't think it's a lot of money for what you get all things connected as most stuff costs more now days and it's should not take you long to do 😂😂😂
not sure that's true, its not a little daunting!
10:49 the amount of plastic😮
it's a monster....
I never determine a box sets usefulness and value solely by cost and number of models. I think if you can actually play a real normal sized game with the contents of a box set, then the hobby value increases. Not all companies add a complete game in their sets. I actually recommend to some people in the past not to buy certain starter sets when beginning a new game from certain companies because they don't have what you need to play a complete game. For this set I think people should save and invest in it. You won't get this kind of cost and play value in the future. :)
well said mate
Thanks Dom. Really enjoyed the unboxing. I’ve gone for the small box as £200 didn’t pass the wife’s credit control 😮
The small one is great, especially if you order from Wayland games
i think mine is now immune to it all!
agreed
great review, loved the way you exposed the facts here, one little thing, for the sake of my ears: lower the volume of the INTRO for my soul left my body the first 15 seconds
Sorry about that
Well said Dom! Keep up the good work and share the love of your £500 with your long suffering wife lol
not a chance lol
thanks Dom, hope you are feeling better soon. I thought you did well to make it through the pcp yesterday. By the way is your anti Roman sentiment based on having read somewhere that they had unattractive hands?
lol - i think i overshared there....
Roughly 8p a miniature. Not bad. My problem is that a box like this can be overwhelming. I always wonder how many people actually finish painting these boxes
agreed - i think you need to be a little clever about it and work your way through things stage by stage - but its a lot of plastic!
That's a huge box Dom plenty to keep.you going
i wont be bored ;)
I do not see what all the fuss is about price is reasonable for what you get a great way for people to get into the hobby with everything you need to start not to hard to paint nuff said not my cup of tea but more power to everyone who wants it have fun play toy soldiers thats my two penn'orth worth
agreed mate
Been busy, didnt know perrys were putting their prices up,as i was going to get a couple of boxes of their acw cavalry,oh well,im trying to do a mosby vs custer cavalry battle when ive got the time to do it.
yeah sadly all the prices are going up in the hobby, metal and plastic has gone up so much
Wow plenty of figures to paint. A lot for your money. I will not be buying a box as I only do 28mm figs. Thanks for sharing 😊
its certainly a lot of figures
That's a big box! Thanks for the review, Dom. im sold on this. I definitely want this 😂
i am excited - just nervous about the amount of painting!
Thank you , Dom . 🐺Loupis Canis .
You bet
That's one huge box! Loved the casualty markers.
yeah thats a nice touch
Hi Dom this is really annoying amazing box of figures and stuff. Yes we all know that gaming is getting more and more expensive but so is every other hobby out there, as you say you get what you pay for and to be honest this box is worth the outlay as you not only get 1 full army but 2 full armies so it's worth the investment, not sure if I will invest at the moment but maybe in the future. Thanks for showing us what you get thanks mate. Take care Terry
agreed Terry
I did not use b&s but I got mine for 185.
that was a heck of a deal - but yes definitely shop around
@@BootsontheTable yes I did get a cracking deal. I am both excited and a little nervous about starting them. I have painted flames of war 15mm before but these lines are a whole new experience.
Where did you get those
@@Oren-vv5vz The store is called overlord games. In the UK.
Your right mate it is great value. Totally agree with you about the rule book but theyre not the only ones providing just 1 book. Im not a nay sayer with regards to Warlord but i do worry about the cost of their metals and the affect that is gaving on the industry as a whole. Also purchasing mini ranges and then re packing them with fewer models at a higher cost is just a con. At least Wargames Factory costed their plastics at the right value. That said Warlords own plastics are very good in both sculpting and value.
i wont defend Warlord but seems like most metal companies have been forced to raise their prices due to the cost of the metal
@BootsontheTable this is very true mate something to do with supply from indonesia. However, compare Warlords £17 for 8 minis to Perry £9 for 6 minis, and that doesn't make sense to me even with the increase in metal prices. At one time, Wagames Foundry seemed to set the price within the industry with packs from £12 to £16 pounds for 6 to 8 minis, which I thought were expensive but now seem a more reasonable price. I think the prices for plastics are reasonable but are creeping up and generally good products, and I am happy to buy them. The metals are nice, but I think they are becoming overpriced. Yes, everything is going up sadly, but I'm not sure their price for metals reflect the market, which seems strange. If i can get them 3rd party, then I'll happily buy them but not direct from Warlord. Their army sets are good value, and the Hannibal stuff you have reviewed is by far the best epic product so far. So, like I say, I'm not really a nay sayer, and I don't really compare them to GW, although there are some similarities. My concern is what might their business model mean for historical wargaming in the future, and if the industry follows their lead, are we going to lose the choice we currently have, and is it going to mean that as prices go up more and more people will squeezed out of the hobby. I think overall Warlords approach has been a good thing for the hobby it could have unfortunate consequences.
Great video, this is soo tempting! Get well soon Dom!
Thanks a ton!
A lot of figures in there. I'm also glad they went for the allies sprue with the Celtiberians and Italic hoplites. A lot of manufacturers neglect those. The notes saying who packed the box were a pleasant surprise the first time I ordered from Warlord, also a complementary sprue thrown in never hurts. Not all of their miniatures or the price points are the best in my opinion, but certainly great value for the plastic sprues they do for Epic. It will be interesting to see if other manufacturers follow suit. The Wargames Atlantic samurai 10mm sprues might be a sign of things to come.
yeah i love the minor nations too. Very nice
I thinks it’s great value, but maybe too many models. I can’t see myself needing to add to my collection (apart from any future artillery pieces) ever again. If there were a smaller starter box, say just 2 small armies, I would have gotten that instead. I am truly daunted by the sheer size of this thing. I am currently just painting two 350pt armies so I can start playing, and paint up division by division from there. I’m even considering turning some of the allied models into wounded markers instead, I will need a bigger home to play a battle with everything in this box.
yeah its a little daunting I wont deny. Of course you can just get individual divisions - not as good value if building a larger army but can allow you to build more modestly
What scale are these?
13.5mm or old school 15mm depending on your view
@@BootsontheTable, ok, thanks. If these were 20mm (1/72) I would definitely get these.
I hope you'll do a video of the Scipio game in action as no-one has done that yet.
i'll certainly look into it
Nice - my box is turning up tomorrow and I'm really excited to get going - I've already painted up a few sprues courtesy of the July WI giveaway and although quite a daunting task, I am looking forward to batch painting my way through the box. My aim is to get enough painted to play out some small scale games and build from there. Very interested in the scale comparison stuff - I think Magister Militum may be a good fit but would be great if you could confirm - the news that Cromarty Forge are going to do 13.5mm is very welcome as their figures are amazing! Oh, and get well soon!
good luck Kevin, its a big arsed box! I havent tried MM ancients to compare but their Napoleonics and Pike & Shotte seem to so I expect they would here too. I am interested in trying Irregular and Museum miniatures too for scale
That is a lot of figures. As for the cost - that is down to the individual imo. If you want to buy "Hannibal" and can afford to, then go ahead and enjoy building, painting and gaming with the figures.
@@johnhart7704 true mate. £200+ is a lot of money for one go, but really you get 2 complete armies out of it
Good honest appraisal, Dom. To address the point that everyone is talking about... £240...anyone who is complaining about that, head to your 'pile of shame' add up how much it cost you, if you need to, add in all the miniatures you own that haven't seen a table for over a year...got to £240 yet? For stuff you haven't even painted or don't use you may well have a lot more money spent than this box. I'm sorry, but people who buy thirty, forty, fifty quids worth of minis just to add them to a large queue of unpainted figures have no grounds to complain about the cost of this. If you, like me, are gaming on a budget, you can, if you want to get into the Second Punic War, stop buying stuff and save up for it. While you are doing that, go scratchbuilding terrain for the 3000 new minis you'll be fielding soon. You can put together good quality terrain pieces out of rubbish and stuff you can forage for on building sites, amongst trees, at carpet shops...it's amazing what people throw away. So no bloody excuses! Sorry, this has turned into a mini rant, but some people piss me off.
@@davidbenton8775 so true
Speaking of compatible figs, in the rule book I noticed a photo of a command tent and table with commanders. I dont know where thats from but would be a good buy.
@@marksfishfrenzy good spot
For what you get it's great value- but do you get too much? That's a LOT of stuff to paint!
Theres smaller army and division boxes too so you can buy in at the level you want. Plus can go in with a friend too if it helps. They paint up pretty quick if you use various tricks
@@martinradcliffe4798 it’s a litter daunting but of course there are smaller box sets too
@@marksfishfrenzy completely agree
@@marksfishfrenzy True, true...
Nice review. I've never heard of Cromarty Forge, and the design of these is very nice. I have been hunting high and low for a decent source of stl ancients in 15mm; on MyMiniFactory, the ancients available are 28 - 32 or 6 - 10 mm scale. Good to see they are making 13.5mm; now Macedonians is what I really want for Epic Battles.
Good morning Dom .question where did you get them easy shield transfers from please
thanks. They were by a chap called 'Carthage Will be destroyed' - he has an Etsy store which he sells them from
@@BootsontheTable Thank you very much for that info. Will check him out
@BootsontheTable Hi Dom is the podcast on tonight. Or next Monday as I believe Martin is on holiday cheers
@@grantpavitt3198 on Ste's channel tonight mate
The Victrix Celts look great, severed heads are obligatory. The Cromarty Iberians are great as well, there should be a new "epic" scale version of the sculpts coming soon. I'd say pay no mind to the grumbles. Having the vids out there enriches the hobby especially as I don't have access to a club and for most of the year don't have access to the paint desk. Keep up the great content so long as you keep enjoy putting it out there.
cheers Robert, much appreciated . I will do them as long as people continue to watch them!
Love those Iberians, Dom! Jealous you've got such a vibrant club. It's a desert on Mars around here for gaming lately.
cheers mate - yes the club is in great shape right now which is awesome
Good update Dom. Nice rant too, quite right on all fronts. Oh, and I have 28mm ACW, must have a BP with them one day. 😁
i didnt know that Alec..... i better get painting then!
Great update! I remember when warlord did their sprue sale and you could get stories for like $1-2 each. If they ever discount that deep again my wallet will be hurting.
yes thats what I recall - not that good anymore sadly :(
Great update nice painting
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video love the paintwork that you have done if you want to have a mon about something that fine bye me and like me I do like good game of dead man hand like us we start off with a scenario and just ends up with a blud bath 😂😂😂🤠🤠🤠
cheers buddy
I have my site set to not monetized.. but its frustrating that YT just throws on their stupid ads anyways. its why Ive slowed down putting up videos....
yeah its annoying that they give us no real control
thanks Dom, you probably have already looked at Pickett's Charge rules for your ACW, but definitely worth a look for large table games in the boot room. Very good period feel which now as an old gamer seems the most relevant thing (my own written 'detailed' rules in the past would find us spending an evening playing out 3 or 4 one minute turns!). Keep doing your own thing and ignore the 'fault finders'.
yeah we played a couple of 15mm Pickett's charge and really enjoyed them
Awesome game Dom. A short campaign would be great.
thats a good idea!
Great looking stuff as always Dom . The world is full of self opinionated muppets what can you do I live my life by the idea you only get one go around so do what makes you happy sod what people think you might want to look at the perry's battle in a box for acw 28mm good value
cheers mate and thanks for the suggestion
Great rant Dom, I aree GDA2 is too big a game for a club night. Keep it for the boot room as solo or a full day game.
cheers mate - I really like GDA2 but yes maybe not a club night
