very well explained. At what speed should I run my Pentair intelliflow variable speed pump? We have a 12,000 gal pool, 6 4x12 thermaguard panels, and about 90' of pipe between the pump and where the pipe connects to the first panel. the 90' includes the 9 or so feet the pipe runs up the wall and the pipes (black) run along the bottom edge of our roof.

Yes, I remember the Fafco Panels. They seemed to work fairly well. Have they been improved since the early 80s.

We use a different brand.. Technosolis. Fafco .. although works well seams to have more leaks ...

How does the control know what the pool temperature is, do you have to run a wire connected to a thermometer type device to the pool ?

Yes , there are 2 sensors ... One small wire and sensor on roof takes roof temp. A second small wire and sensor is in pipe near pump takes pool temp ... the control compares these temps roof vs pool and opens valve when heat need to be added .. when roof 4= degrees hotter than pool

Thanks for the very informative video. How much extra work is involved in installing a pool heater system on a tile roof? Also the sunny side of my roof is pretty far away from the pool pump. Do I need a separate pump and plumbing just for the heater system?

I have done tile roofs ...both curved Spanish Tile and Flat tiles...It's a little more work and time drilling though tiles.... BTW the screws only go on tile and not the decking or underlayment... I have done Solar pool heating from long distances ..A site survey would need to be done in most cases can use existing pump..other times we upgraded to a variable speed pump...that can be set higher speed when running solar. What if you need to replace your roof shingles underneath the solar system? How much more complexity and cost to that job does having one of these systems add?

Depending on number of solar panels and difficulty of install ie tile roof 2 story etc add to costs . But roughly $800-2000 in most casss this includes replacement of some mounts and misc materials and labor.

Can these deal with snow? Like michigan home snow?

In states that have snow .. you will want to drain solar panels in fall before freezing temperatures arrive... to prevent water from freezing and damaging solar panels .... In spring when you get that unexpected freezing night temp you can run the pump during night to prevent damage

is this a good business opportunity in 2023? i have some family in the pool plastering business. thinking this could be a good addition

May have a leaking pipe .... The fittings ae cemented on a straight pipes ... over manyn years of being in heat and sun could leak.... a solar technician will need to replace some pipe and fittings to repair ... It usually an easy fix. thanks for watching.

Yes you should have a vaccumm breaker coming out of top end or bottom end of solar array

I live in Texas, Hot, Hot, My pool is 20' by 34' by 4-6', My roof is black shingles. How much to install a solar system, Also have a 6 by 8' Hottub connected. Most of my nabors say I dont need a heater. Just starting build.

It all depends … what part of Texas, what swim season -months you want to swim, what temperature you like… I’m in Tampa,FL and although we are in tropical climate … the spring and fall the pool will be too cold in 70’s even though the afternoon temp is low 80’s … this is when solar can help heat pool … I’m thinking you might have certain months like this in TX Also when pool gets to hot you can cool pool of by running solar at night … Since I’m in FL I cannot service you but I’ll gladly introduce you to the mfr who can recommend a local company. We have hot temps through September, This year it was warm through Octber but thats not the ussual, Warming up by April. It is in low 70's t/ 80's this week.Thanks for replying, I will get with my pool builder this week.@@solarbygreengreg

What's the maximum distance from you solar pool panels to your pool equipment?

Hey John, there is not a maximum distance ... but longer the pipe run will need a stronger pool pump ... and also will lose some heat through pipes if pipes not on roof ... I've done solar pool heaters with -200'-300' pipe runs mainly commercial. HOA pools ... Of course longer pipe runs more cost as well ... I have done solar pool heating where pump near North roof .. but south on other side of house ... not a problem .. but more pipe more cost ... stronger pump needed .. Solar is lowest cost to heat pool because no energy costs .....Solar best if you just want to swimm when it's nice out but pool too cold ... However if its very cold out say 50 degrees .. and you want 85 degree pool then will need a gas or electric to supplement solar

What about the weight of the water on the roof? That's a heavy load

Regarding weight ... the largest solar panel 4'x12' , with water only 62.5 lbs divide by 48 sq ft .. = 1.3 lbs per sq ft .. that's actually pretty light ... any home roof can support this little weight ... here is data sheet www.techno-solisusa.com/solar-pool-heating/specifications/. thanks for watching ...

A professional engineered and installed solar pool heater DOES Work! It's proven by research labs... What doesn't work are cheap online solar pool haeter kits that can't heat thousands of gallons of water... Feel Free to come visit Florida I will let you feel the hot water coming out of solar panels.
