Actually you can prevent a bullet from breaking the sound barrier. It is called “sub-sonic” ammunition. Bullets made to intentionally go below Mach-1. Traveling fast enough to do damage, but slow enough to not cause a sonic boom.

“Silencers” aren’t for stealth, they’re primarily for hearing protection. By the way, nobody calls them “silencers” anymore. They’re generally called suppressors, since they don’t actually silence the sound of gun fire.

You can reduce the SPL (sound pressure level) by adding a "wipe" into the suppressor. The "wipe" is 1/8" thick heat-resistant rubber with an X cut into it and is placed between last baffle and exit port. It is only good for about 10 rounds before needing replacement, but it will make a suppressor "movie quiet"...!!!

There is also subsonic ammo that makes it possible to make really silent shots with a supressor, for example the MP-5 SD can fire subsonic 9mm bullets and all you hear when it shoots is the sounds of the bullets cycling and chambering and a quiet pop.

Actually, the MP5SD, Honey Badger, and Black Mamba (a version of the SIG MCX) have special suppressers and muzzle devices that attach the rifle and suppressor that actually slow the supersonic bullets to subsonic speeds. Ian McKellan of Forgotten Weapons did a video on this with the MP5SD, and the other two firearms use the same principle.

It's sad that ignorance can be taught faster than facts, isn't it? I shoot 55grain bullets at 1000 fps out of a .250 rifle with a silencer, and it sounds quieter than in video games. I use it with a thermal scope for rat sniping, up to 300 yards, sub moa.

@@May-gr8bp At least most of the information is right, it would be unwise to say it is wrong. It is however, incomplete yes. Subsonic would mostly be utilized in a CQB environment almost exclusively, and if you look over the military specifications for infantry munitions, youll find there is no documentation on subsonic ammunition. SOCOM has indeed used subsonic for covert ops for years, use in military service probably dating back decades but has never been normalized as there is no large scale demand nor requirement. In the infantry role, it almost exclusively applies to 9x19 and 5.56, with lesser representation in 300 AAC and .308

There are subsonic bullets so it is possible to almost entirely remove the sound for rifles. (9x39, .300 AAC Blackout, and .22LR are a few of these bullets)

When I was enlisted and using silencers on the firearms, they worked so well that the only noise was the slide moving back to eject used round and load new round from magazine and the action locking back up. The moving parts on the gun made more noise than the bullet coming out with the military silencers.

@@peterdaudelin3594 yeah, try taking in a deep breath, hold mouth shut and build pressure trying to blow air out and let it all go, that is close to the sound it made but with semi auto or full auto. Yes thin rubber or felt buffers can be put in to quiet the action but if you take a firearm and pull back the action and let it go, that was as loud as it got but we did lower that noise with the buffers in the action.

9:25 there's literally tons of companies selling subsonic pistol ammo in other words ammo that when fired the bullet travels slower than the speed of sound it wouldn't surprise me if some of these rounds were traveling as fast as 340 meters per second that's three meters per second slower than the speed of sound

Ziad Khaled yup but you put a suppressor on there, take out all the targets in a room and the people in the room next to them will only hear a few pops that could be explained any number of ways instead of loud BANGs that instantly tell you there’s a firefight going on

I thought it was an SCP Explained video by watching the animations in the beginning of the video. It's great video👍

There is a way to stop the sonic boom. Using subsonic ammo. If you wanted to keep using supersonic ammo though, you could do something like what the MP5SD does, having a system that reduces the bullet's speed below sound barrier.

I was expecting when the tank came along they would use a bombing run with bombs equipped with silencers

there was a story in sakigake's manga, were a floor was designed to squeak as much as possible, as some kind of alarm to reveal intruders.

Loved the video but the whole “silence” thing is way off. A suppressor doesn’t make the volume of a gunshot that much less, it just sounds a lot different.

I needed to make sure

silencer manufacturers : *nooo you cant just make everything that has a 4 inch can at the end of the barrel make the whole thing go quiet!1111!!! thats not how sound works!!11!! movie and sound producers : *haha gun go*

Silencers and vehicle mufflers have some things in common although their designs are somewhat different--maintaining the speed of the exhaust isn't a priority, and no solids are ejected.

The proper term is actually silencer, as that is what the original patent referred to it as. And yes ai realize it did doesn’t actually silence but suppress noise. Personally I just call it a can.

You can get heavy slow sub sonic ammo for various calibers .45 and 300 blackout come to mind they can get rather quiet with the right setup.

You can prevent bullets from breaking the sound barrier. Check out subsonic 300 blackout. Designed to be fired supress and not break mach 1.

@@greybogdan8451 no, but the guy that created them, Hiram Percy Maxim, named them silencers. So I'm pretty certain that's what they're called

The OSS tried to make a super silenced .45 ACP auto during WWII. The barrel had numerous small holes along much of it's length, a silencer on the end of the barrel, and used stacked metal mesh washers to construct the receiver. It was very quiet, described like the sound of a kitchen match being struck. The velocity of the bullet was much reduced of course, but it was meant for close-up work. Unfortunately, the racket raised by the slide and bolt working was so loud the gun was useless for it's intended job. Sot hey switched to a single-shot pistol.

The weakness of the suppressor is that it makes the gun harder to conceal in a stealth mission.

I heard somewhere that when agents were given Welrod they were explaining that it was a pump for bike tires. I dunno if it's true but made sense. It is very hard to conceal them

Well, unless you're a spy, you just avoid getting seen in general, so concealment doesn't matter.

him: a gun can never be completely silent, because of the sonic boom from bullets people who know about subsonic rounds: dont ever use the word smart with me.

Subsonic Rounds + Silencer = Quiet Rounds, disabling the gun’s flash ability and sound. Resulting in a massive 345 PSI Drop.

Hello fellow no videos challenge

The biggest expert I know said that when firing a weapon, hand held, it's three sounds you hear. The metal slamming into itself, which is pretty loud, but no bang. Then of course the powder deflegrating, and gasses expanding, but the highest bang is the bullet breaking the sound barrier. So with sub sonic ammunition, you would get that movie pop. He demonstrated it with an ar.

Not all ammo is supersonic, the 45ACP for example (used with the MK23 for example) is subsonic, this (MK23) was used as primary weapon for special forces as the 45 packs a mean punch but since it is subsonic is easier to be suppressed (not silenced, you will still hear a distinct sound).

The correct term is "suppressor" You can't fully silence a firearm

You are wrong. The correct name is silencer as it was invented by HP Maxim in 1902 as it was patented as such. When you fill out an ATF Form it is classified as a silencer. The term "suppressor" came out sometime in the 80s.

Many silencers employ a combination of enclosed gas expansion, waveform cancellation and frequency shift to attain amazing levels of suppression. They can also provide freebore boost increasing bullet velocity and gas vortex stabilization of the round to increase accuracy. They can even be tuned to the weapon to reduce barrel harmonics and help with cycling... Suppressors have been advancing by leaps and bounds lately. Much of these advancements are coming from gas and fluid modelling software and materials advances.

I think most people would be surprised at just how loud the violent cycling of the action is on most guns, not even factoring in the noise from the gun powder.

They really should mention the fact that semi-automatic weapons also make alot of sound from the movement of the bolt/slide slamming back and forth

They are incredibly expensive, sometimes costing more then the tank themselves, have you ever used a gun before? Of course they have silencers/suppressors.

a video on sub-sonic ammunition might be pretty good for keeping the cod players who think they know what there talking about calm and quiet

at 8:05 if you have captions on, it shows a link that when types into google, shows the tank with a silencer on it
