Use a horizontal loop layout. I witnessed a very engineered vertical well system fail miserably.

This will never heat your water cylinder in winter, You'll have to defrost the condenser most of the time if its below 0.

So, Sandy Sanderson, you think below 0 above ground is below 0 below ground? You get beneath the frost layer and it's all good.

Is the heat pump necessary? Would a simple air handler blowing air over the tubes carrying circulated fluid accomplish the same thing but just not as efficiently? Seems like a lot of expense and hassle for not much gain.

The idea is a more efficient heat pump. Most houses already have a heat pump. The problem is whenever you want to dump heat outside it’s always hot and when you want to get heat from the outside it’s always cold. When you have water flowing over the condenser that’s always 50 degrees it makes it a lot more efficient. Unless you want your house to be 50 degrees all the time

You could theoretically use straight water in the summer for cooling. However, most evaporators run at about 40 degrees. You could either have a big ass air handler with alot of larger ducting or put in the small amount of electricity required to drop it 10 degrees.
