    Great video. Never heard of this concept until I read that the 2024 Paris Olympic Village is being cooled via Geothermal Cooling. This is definitely an option to consider. Thank you!

    Thanks for getting more technical than 98% of people out there explaining how these units work. I was missing a few small but important details to really understand the basics of how they do what they do. Looking forward to more in depth knowledge in the future.

    I thought of a simple geothermal concept, design your condenser to with an open bottom and feed air through an earth loop. The coil would need to be horizontal and the condenser fan a little more robust, but I would think it would seldom if ever need defrost as the earth would be able to condition the air.

    Really great video! I’ve got a drilling company down in Panama and have been looking at expanding into offering geothermal cooling as it is almost non existent down here and this was a great introduction for me.

    Just a plumber in maintenance with some courthouses that use VAV's, cooling towers and chillers, and while I'm getting the hang of these, I do have one buiding with a closed looped Geothermal system, an okd hotel turned into a DOJ, obviously we have guys that understand how these work, but I need to ask my dumb question here, If the ground temp is 55-60 degrees in the summer, do the package units need a compressor and refrigerant? Cant that 55-60 degree be pumped through the coils in the package unit and deliver 55 or 60 degree air to the room its servicing?

    Great video. How does the inside unit look if you have two zones; whereas in traditional Air to Air, you would need two separate units?

    2. Is there any advantage with having a buried closed water tank for taking heat from the water lines in the summer (instead of all the heat being transferred to earth) & then using that heat in the winter? 2/2

    1. Is there any advantage with having a direct exchange between the refrigerant (& refrigerant lines) & the earth verses using the co-axle heat exchanger to exchange refrigerant heat to the water lines (& then the water lines exchanging the heat with earth)? 1/2

    It's also super overwhelming to plumbers who don't have a damp clue about you know mechanical stuff except for maybe how to calculate some error for some rooms and you know get mastic all over them.

    I had two questions. 1) Can the horizontal loop be run with copper pipe? It seems like it might be more durable long-term and able to be shorter because of the higher heat conductivity. 2). I wonder if its possible to run the horizontal loop in a semiopen narrow trench filled with sand or gravel for easier access and maintenance of the loop. I have two projects in Michigan and Missouri if you know anyone who could do a custom job.

    HDPE piping will FAR outlast copper. I would definitely NOT use copper. The thermal continuity of the piping (although important) is not as important as you would think because the soil around the pipe is what actually retains the heat. This is why IGSHPA outlines keeping about 15' spacing between each vertical closed loop well. The HDPE material also has a 55 year warranty but I believe it will last centuries. Will never need access for maintenance either if done properly.

    Can geothermal achieve the same indoor temps as traditional air to air? For example, in Texas I can achieve 68 degrees indoor temperature even at an outdoor ambient temperature of 100 degrees.

  • @aglmechanicaltips

    @aglmechanicaltips

    Ай бұрын

    Yes, in fact if designed correctly it can outperform standard "air to air". "air to air" looses some performance when it is hotter outside because it is trying to "dump" heat into hot air. Geothermal performance is not impacted by this because it is using the ground to dump it's waste heat. The biggest thing here is the design though. If you want a house to operate colder than standard design the geothermal loops need to be increased in capacity to cover the additional heat that will need to be dumped.
