How Doctor Who's 60th Quelled My Fears

Ойын-сауық

I've wanted to make a video on Doctor Who for a while and, with the new series starting in 2 weeks, this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Plus, I actually have a point I wanna make with this one. Not just a ramble about a show I like.

This is one of the better breakdowns of what worked about the 60th specials and the nearly 20 years of TV leading up to them.

I always knew you were a fan of the show given your poop from a long time ago. But actually getting to hear you talk about it? Hell yeah. Hope this can lead to a new Who Poop in the future. Hell the 60th specials seem prime for it.

As a person who only knows about Doctor Who due to lego dimensions this is actually a very interesting video! Sad to see it’s kinda low on the view side, good watch anyways!

The giggle should have been explained more like it alters someone's perception of what's correct and what's wrong rather than "makes you think you're always right".

Haven't regularly watched the show since Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, hearing your rundown and analysis has honestly got me interested in picking it back up, thanks for making and sharing❤❤❤ Also shoutout to the edit at 48:22 when you showed the Toymaker juggling at the same time as you saying it, always makes me smile seeing commentary vids do that

I saw the giggle as basically making everyone think all their subconscious biases and intrusive thoughts were right. Obviously Kate doesn't really believe the hurtful things she said to The Doctor and Shirley, but we're all fed certain systemic biases in this culture and the giggle basically made everyone ignore reason and fully pursue the selfish and irrational impulses that they would normally ignore.

Okay, that does make sense. I can understand everyone having biases, but it doesn't explain the conspiracy theory stuff cos that's something people have to be taught to believe. I feel like the further you have to go to explain exactly what the giggle does, the less it fits with the Toymaker's plan.

Really enjoying this breakdown of the 60th, one of the best I've seen! To add to what you said at 29:42 though, you can absolutely be both transmasc/fem and identify as non-binary. One of my closest friends is transmasc (and is transitioning to a more male body) but fully identifies as non-binary, and while I'm not non-binary myself I am transfem and comfortable with both she/her and they/them. The transmasc/fem part is just which direction you transitioned, but what you actually identify as in the end isn't set to just one thing. (Many non-binaries also have to transition because their original look causes way too much dysphoria for them.) I hope this helped! (Also a bit "eh" on the whole thing with Rose at the end, since I felt like it went just one step too far.)

Honestly not too different experiences with the Revival (still yet to see Classic Who), my big difference is that I think the Chibnall era while certainly flawed and missed reaching its full potential, is honestly not that bad. I mean, to be fair you do say you actually like a lot of it still, but yeah. It was the Moffat era that I struggled with more, though I do think at least much of the 12th Doctor's stuff I'm softening on, I actually ended up like Hell Bent of all things a lot even as I went in expecting it to hate it (I skipped series 9 lol). Funnily, with 12 and Clara, I do see some romantic elements, but it isn't really brought to the forefront like it is with others (I kinda see a sort of queerplatonic connection myself, something that can't really fit into a binary of platonic or romantic), and it's also interesting how even as they could call each other out, they could also both enable the worst parts in each other. Also: apparently the idea for the 60th came from a chat between Tennant, Tate and RTD during COVID lockdown, so even if the BBC was certainly all "oh yes the old faves" the creatives didn't seem to have that intent, maybe wanting to relive the glory days a bit but it was mostly just "wouldn't it be fun to do again?" The Rose gender stuff - honestly, it's kinda confusing to me too. To explain being nonbinary - yeah, it means you're not male or female, but it's also worth noting that gender is a spectrum, so while some people might consider themselves nonbinary, they might still identify with aspects of the two binary genders, so they might consider themselves nonbinary but still male or female. I'm sure it might be confusing to some people, but even being cisgender myself I've hung around trans people for like a decade so I've had a lot of time to see many nuances to this. That being said... I do think the gender stuff as presented in the episode is confusing. Especially that one scene where they chide the Doctor for being "male presenting", because even if it tries to be all girl power and stuff, it ironically reinforces gender essentialism, saying that men are innately one way and women are innately another (if you're wondering: yeah, many people who aren't reactionary chuds on the internet have similar issues with the scene). Also... I think the 13th Doctor was certainly not someone good at letting go, if you ask me. I'm fine with Donna making jabs at the Doctor (she always did that), but I think they should've made it more about the Doctor himself, or even that face specifically - the 14th Doctor has the face of the 10th, the one who infamously said "I don't want to go". Also I kinda have issues with how easily they just did that after making such a big deal of "IF SHE REMEMBERS SHE WILL DIE" but eh I'm getting sidetracked. In general, Star Beast is good, but to me it kinda feels like doing both reintroducing Donna and doing the Meep justice was a bit much for it. Wild Blue Yonder: honestly, that scene was what sold me too. I actually love a lot of the Timeless Child stuff, in fact my biggest issue with the Chibnall era is that they didn't really explore it and the stuff around it to its full potential. I'm fine shaking up continuity, and the story idea itself had lots of potential in my eyes, they just didn't really explore it in a satisfying way. Like, in a weird way, it's like despite being one of the biggest changes to the show's lore, the actual impact of it was rarely ever felt in the episodes themselves? But yeah, RTD taking from both Moffat (the more fantastical side of things) and Chibnall (the orphan background) even if I do have my concerns about things being too close to RTD1 still is still exciting. Like, the Timeless Child stuff is apparently a big reason why RTD made Ruby an orphan too. I do think the beginning is a little too silly, but in general it is pretty great. To explain The Giggle - it is kind of what you suggested - all impulses gone, whatever you think is instantly right. We all have thoughts here and there, but we're able to discern what is and isn't rational. The Giggle turns that filter off - whatever is in your mind? Yeah that's it, anything for number one. I think the best way to look at it is how it's a social media analogy - online, so many people forget they're talking to real people so their filters come down. Then they start to more easily dehumanise them, and then they're more easily able to say what they really think without thinking through the consequences. I think I can see where you're struggling to understand, but to me it made sense, personally. I think the best way to think of it is that it doesn't make people right - it makes them righteous. Yes, everyone believes in what they do, but if they're found to be wrong, they can be willing to compromise and be open to new information. They can learn and grow. Here, they just stick to whatever is on their mind, and refuse to concede anything. People might think they're right to not be self interested jerks, but I think you need to see being right as equaling being self interested in this context. The Toymaker put it best - he's making everyone think like they're in a game, and thus, life is a game, and in a game you want to win, so you must do anything to win no matter what. Maybe they could've worded it in the episode better, but eh, it was clear to me. But yeah, good video and good breakdown of the 60th. I do still think the bigeneration stuff is pretty messy, mostly because it just raises so many questions and RTD raises even more of them behind the scenes (from everything I understand I understand it as more like 14 lives out his life and then as his life ends his consciousness is sent back and 15 is born, especially with lines like 15 saying "I'm fine because you are", but so much of it is either unclear or not explained enough so I get why so many are confused), but with the specific story being told and how you describe what happened, I do think it works for what it's doing. I'm not sure what to think of the upcoming series cuz I do still have these lingering worries that despite everything it might still fall into some familiar traps (and also worried about how RTD seems to be really focused on how Doctor Who is going commercially), but I will say I'm more positive, like I'm sure it will at least be enjoyable.

Thanks for the response. I did find it strange that I hadn't heard anyone else struggle to understand the giggle. I figured there must just be some way I'm not looking at it right. I think if it was just the scene at the start with a load of people we didn't know running riot in the street, I wouldn't have questioned it. The bit that broke it for me was Kate going full giggle. That kind of implies she does actually think those things she said, but doesn't say them out loud cos she thinks better of it. I guess the idea is that's the case for every single human and I don't like that implication.

I don’t really like what they did with Doctor Who with the Timeless Child and bi-regeneration. So far, I’m not really impressed with Ncuti Gatwa’s flamboyant take on The Doctor. I think I’m done with anything new with Doctor Who for a while, no offense.

This was a really enjoyable watch. I have been a fan since David took reign of the show in 2006 so I have been on a very similar journey to yourself with this show - it's my all-time favourite. I wasn't skeptical at all when RTD took over again, simply because I knew what he was capable of. It didn't matter if it looked like a move due to declining views etc, I know RTD can make good TV, and if he's come back to Doctor Who, he's coming back because he has good TV to present. I saw the three specials, and loved all three in their own way. It was nice to have the identity of the show I have loved for many years shine though again, and I already have an upbeat feeling about Ncuti in the way he's already presented the role. I'm just glad to be able to look forward to Doctor Who again. And the major push on the promotional material side is something that was really lacking when Chibnall took over. Right now, we're getting new images, new clips and trailers, RTD keeping in touch over Instagram, official news articles etc. It's great - and I even have more people around me interested in the show now. Let's bring on this new era!2
